>tfw you taught english abroad for a year and travelled all over europe and north africa and posted and participated in /trv/ all the time and took megabus trips around the U.S. in college then came back to America got a real job and now never travel because you only get 3 weeks off a year and it seems so horribly expensive

Did this happen to anyone else? Back then I didn't mind having only a couple g in the bank and spending it all traveling, but now even though I have like 50k, dropping 1k to go to europe for a week just doesn't seem worth it. It's like life just isn't set up for travelling because every career has a trajectory you have to follow and leaving your job for months at a time isn't possible. I have an okay job but I'm not a programmer or something so headhunters aren't banging on my door to hire me.

Feels bad, I don't know how to get out of this slump.

Travel like a normal fag and use your 3 weeks.

I wish I saved the pic, but there is a meme floating around FB that equates purchases of an iphone, another item, and a hoverboard to plane tickets to Europe, and places in the USA. I think maybe the Carribean/S. America, too. And it closes with collect memories not things, or something like that.

always search your room prior to settling in. A cursory check under the sheets would have prevented this.

I just looked into this they paid $85 a night for a room on NYE weekend lol in manhattan

>$85

Serious do people not expect the rates of a hotel to reflect the property and its condition

I would expect to pay $300-400 a night for decent hotel in NYC and $400 and up for luxury property
>>
>>1065685
I would expect that any hotel that is discovered to have infestations would be shut down by the government until it can show the infestation is gone. If it puts the place out of business, so be it.

I'm getting conflicting info about US credit cards and European chip and pin card readers.

My credit cards (Capital One and Citi) have a pin, but from what I gather they're chip and signature cards. Will these work in, for example, a train ticket kiosk in The Netherlands?

Does anyone with either of those companies cards (or US chip cards in general) have experience with using them in Europe recently?

>>
>>1065455
If you have a pin and can withdraw money from ATMs in the US it will work everywhere in europe the same way. insert the card, enter your pin, done.
If you have a newer card it will have paypass where you can pay up to 40€ by just putting your card on the reader without entering a pin (great to quickly buy tickets or other small stuff.)

Some older machines in restaurants will print the signature receipt.
>>
American here traveling through the UK right now. I have had no problems using my credit cards with a chip at all (I have chase and as well as a west coast credit union). I do have some cards without a smart chip, and although most cashier's are confused by the old act of swiping, since America is lagging in this technology, it has worked in every single instance I have used it.
Hope that helps some.
>>
>>1065455
Make sure you have a longer PIN, not just the 4 digit kind in the US.

The swiping still works, of course, as does imprinting and reading the numbers manually into a machine. So, though an unmanned ATM or train station machine could conceivably have an issue, you can still go into your bank (Citi), and get money. Having 2 cards is great of course, gives you a backup when one is having an issue. And, in my experience, issues do happen and they're unavoidable, from temporary zip code alerts even if you told them about your trip, to whatever else. Shit happens.

Looks good. What camera do you use?

How does that Xiaomi work for you? I was about to buy one but stumbled across a good deal on a gopro 3+ silver and went with that instead.
>>
>>1065408
You are very good at considering your FOV as well as pivoting speed and you work well within your boundaries.
Very nice music selection too, really helped with the vibe of the location and whatnot and is much better than the electronica trash that so many european video makes use in their stuff regardless of subject matter.
My only suggestion as that you not let the blackness at the end linger so much
>On a personal note, did you help the ducky?

You ever travel with your dog /trv/?

No.

I board them in a kennel when I travel.

Honestly, having pets isn't a great idea if you like to travel. It's expensive to house them and it's not very fair to your beloved pet.

Pets are good to have when you're just starting a family and are planning on basically staying near your home for the next 10 years.

However, there's plenty of hotels around the country/world that allow pets. You just have to do a lot of research ahead of time.

Moving around with animals can be hell.

A lot of regulation that change from country to country, some even have forced quarantine time of 14 days up to 3 months, other force you to fill out a shitload of paperwork, need of a special insurance for the time your pet is in the country etc...

Unless you're traveling with a service animal or it's a invitational sport competition (show jumping, dog agility, polo...) where you get special permissions it really sucks.

A dog that goes under the seat in front of you in the cabin is one thing (less than 20lbs). Checking a dog is russian roulette with their life. Even the most frequent flier dogs (show dogs) are hurt, lost and killed far more than you'd know. Airlines don't advertise that, because it wouldn't make sense to talk about it. If you can declare your dog a "therapy" or guide dog officially, you can buy them a seat in the cabin. Could have some other special exceptions crossing borders with this type too.

They're essential wild animals and can get spooked, freaked out, tear out toenails and bleed to death, break a blood vessel in an ear while slammed in a door, heart attacks, nervous behaviors, and need supervision by someone educated. Your dog is fighting for his life to get back to you or to a feeling of safety. They're loose on the tarmac, running around getting hit by cars, and you name it while they are out of your sight. It's horrible.
If you travel by car, by train, or something where they are never out of your sight, maybe yes.

Let's talk about quarantine. I wouldn't subject any animal through that, unless I was moving and it was simply only once. I might be more inclined to rehome my animal in a later stage of life than put them in a kennel for a month.

Cayman Islands give their dogs their own passports. TSA can consider even body-sniffing dogs traveling with their trainers to an earthquake as a "weapon" if they're the wrong breed. I'm telling you it happens, because it does, and it can end your trip immediately. Be careful. The regulations in order to travel can be more frequent vaccinations, health certificates that cost you money at your vet to prepare with very recent dates, etc.

Hey travelers. Thinking about RVing in Utah.
What are some things I should look out for when renting RV? Anyone have any experince with RVing or renting RVs?

I went to Moab, Utah three years ago. I stayed at a hotel on the main road there, and had a great time. Want to go again, but instead want to go from drive the RV park to park and well, park the rv, and enjoy the park.

Hey guys, I intend to go do Chinese New year in Chinatown. How to do it right? There appears to be two festivals, a firecracker and cultural festival on Feb 8th and a parade on Feb 14th.

Has anybody ever gone to one of their festivals? Is one better than the other? Advice for a first timer? Travel advice, vendor advice, anything you can offer. I'm not Chinese but can speak a little. Will there be restaurants open? Best spots to visit? I intend to travel from eastern Pennsylvania.

Hi all,

I have a decent career but I want to take a 9 week break to teach english in china and get it out of my system (my company will allow this long max.). I am prepared to volunteer but it seems that these programs are either restricted to summers or in crappy locations with accommodation that isn't good for a bachelor like home stay or need to pay for bad home cooked meals etc.

Should I just get a normal one year contract and then break it after 9 weeks I'm ready via midnight run or something ? What are the consequences of this ? Could I be blacklisted to never work in China again ?

>>
I should also add the reason I wouldn't want to do a summer is that they normally involve being isolated in a camp or teaching weekends and nights......also I want to have the "real experience" of teaching in a classroom and not tutor some kids after class
>>
>>1065016
Or would it be possible to just sign a contract and give one month notice...I heard they have to give a letter of release

I got a job recently and I'm going to have to move. They have many offices and are letting me have a top / bottom 3. They can guarantee I won't have any of my bottom 3, but my top 3 are merely hopefuls. However I really don't know much about these places that I have options for. Maybe I can get some insight from this pace. Here are the locations I have options for:

Anchorage, Alaska
Little Rock, Arkansas
Sacramento, California
Atlanta, Georgia
Springfield, Illinois
Boston, Massachusetts
Detroit, Michigan
St. Paul, Minnesota
Santa Fe, New Mexico
Salem, Oregon
Columbia, South Carolina
Nashville, Tennessee (x2)
Salt Lake City, Utah
Montpelier, Vermont
Olympia, Washington (x3)
Washington, D.C.
Charleston, West Virginia
Madison, Wisconsin

>>
Top 3 would be difficult but I can give you some you absolutely should not probably take (then again I don't know your interests so I'm taking a shot in the dark)
>Madison, WI
Wisconsin in general is just hell
>Charleston, WV
I actually kinda like WV in a weird way but it is also hell on earth too.
>Nashville, TN
Just a shit city IMO, really gritty.
>Olympia,WA
Unless you really want to be close to Seattle, most parts in WA that aren't Seattle are complete shit-heaps, trust me.
>Little Rock, AR
I really don't need to explain this.
>Columbia, SC
I would consider SC if it was Charleston, I really like that city, otherwise as a former North Carolinian I can tell you SC sucks
Places like Anchorage or Santa Fe definitely are not for everyone but they are very unique IMHO. If it was up to me my top 3 would be Boston (great city culturally, could use better public trans but it's access to Amtrak's NEC and close proximity to NYC would be nice), D.C. (great metro system, also access to Amtrak high speed trains to NYC, just a decent all around city, regardless of its crime issues), and maybe SLC or St. Paul.
>>
>>1064984
You should give us some more info about you. Things like what climate you prefer; what hobbies you have, whether you're into nightlife or professional sports, or hunting moose... What sort of scenery or activities you're into as the life in Boston, Atlanta and St Paul is going to be much different from life in the smaller towns.
>>
>>1064998

>Wisconsin in general is just hell
Funny you say that, my buddy who did an internship there said the same thing.

>I actually kinda like WV in a weird way but it is also hell on earth too.
>Just a shit city IMO, really gritty.
>I would consider SC if it was Charleston, I really like that city, otherwise as a former North Carolinian I can tell you SC sucks

Honestly picking a southern / eastern states is low on my list because of its general reputation. I'm not exactly into the conservative Christain thing. I would consider Arkansas because I have lots of family there, but a few hours from Little Rock, so maybe maybe not.

I used to live in Alaska and have friends there and I love the state, so it's actually one of my top picks. Not sure if I'd want it to be my top 3 though, because it's pretty difficult to live there. Cost of living is higher too.

> Santa Fe
Not sure about this place, don't think I've ever been to NM. One of my bigger hobbies is rock climbing and snowboarding so having local mountains would be a big bonus. What's good about NM?

> Boston
I was really considering Boston. I've never really been to the east coast and honestly cities / large densities of people have been appealing but kind of daunting. I'm sort of a private dude. Although I'm kind of a constitutional patriot so living there might be fun for me.

> Olympia, Sacramento, Salem
I live on the West Coast so living working close would be a bonus. Also West Coast is Best Coast. high cost of living in Cali though. And honestly California makes me want to throw up.

> SLC
I would really like to live there I think. They have good mountains and are into sports and overall I hear good things. Not sure I'd be into that Mormon culture though.

> St. Paul
I have no idea. Literally.

> Springfield
License to Ill, amirite?

> Vermont, DC,
No idea, Don't really know the east coast. Although I wouldn't be entirely opposed to it.
