So guys, I just finished biking from Nova Scotia to Vancouver in Canada and while on the road my drivers license and health card expired. I called the airline and they said it won't be possible to fly back home to ns with expired id. Just wondering if anyone has experience with this issue? Will they usually even check if it's expired? Tldr can I board a domestic flight with nothing but a expired dl and health card?

Im going to Berlin in a few weeks with my immediate family and need your advice.

I have small gifts for them this christmas, but would like to treat them all to a dinner and/or a show whilst we are there.

Can anyone recommend something? Struggling on short notice, something a bit nicer than the holocaust museum...

Thanks!

Hey, OP. Take this dude with you.

>>1060964

I'm 24, just graduated college and returned home. Back in August I got job offer overseas, not a dream job, but just a way to travel. I'm scheduled to start in January and planned on travelling abroad for the next two years or so.

Now I'm getting cold feet. I went to a movie with my mother the other night and started talking to this guy while in line. He was about my age and by himself, so I ended up sitting with him at the theater. We got along pretty well and had similar interests.

Afterwards my mother called me out for not properly introducing myself or getting his contacts to hang out later. I blew her off, saying I'm leaving the country in a month. But really I think she was right and I've been depressed about it the past few days. I feel like I walked away from the beginning of a beautiful friendship.

So now I wonder if I even want to travel overseas. I had a lonely childhood and used to dream of travelling the world to find a real home. I've already travelled a lot, seen world wonders, learned different languages and tasted exotic foods. I've already stood on the Great Wall of China. Do I really have to see the pyramids if it means avoiding friendships and dating? I haven't dated since high school because I was afraid of saying goodbye. I'm starting to think that whatever pain in my childhood isn't intrinsic to my home town.

If home is where the heart is, am I turning mine to stone? How do I get over this depression? How do I decide if I want to keep travelling or stop to focus on life?

Stop being wet

I don't know shit about credit cards other than I have a basic discover card for cash back and building "credit". I want to rack up miles or whatever I can passively do to make every penny count. I treat my card like a debit card so I never miss a payment and never pay interest. What do yall use?

If you're going to get a credit card for travel rewards, make sure you get one that offers a good bonus for spending a certain amount of money in the first few months, and that you can spend that much.

Also make sure it offers no foreign transaction fees and no annual fee, unless your spending is high enough to warrant a card with an annual fee.

You might be better off simply using a card that gives you cash back and using that money for travel, but it depends on your spending habits.

Hrm, well, say a Delta SkyMiles or gold/platinum gets you free checked bags, that's worth quite a bit more at $150 a pop than a free upgrade worth only $50-75. Combine it with free travel insurance when you use it to book, waivers on CDW, added insurance or lengthed warranties when purchasing electronics, or checking bags that might get loss, and really the perks are wayyy more valuable than any kind of free travel you think you'll get.

There's been a pretty good lockdown on free flights from every kind of loyalty card that exists, like another anon said, look more for lack of transaction fees, and like you said, your cash back. Saving 5% on gas, double points on pharmacy/grocery items, and stuff covers the annual fee, and then you think of the insurance bump. Break even on a bad day, get a discount on your purchases if you're good at the game.

Concierge services are nice. Use it for concert tix you can't even get otherwise. Use the card websites to book last minute hotels with discounted airfare, half-price festival tickets and such, almost a groupon kind of thing.

For lack of transaction and ATM fees, I've found nothing better than Schwab banking. Capital one has a great one, as does Chase. For best perks overall, Delta Skymiles. Delta has the most coverage in the world as well as the biggest alliance.

OK I'm in DC for 7 more day, I don't have a lot of money, but I'm looking for things to do that are educational, fun, and relatively inexpensive.
What should I do while I am here, what should I go and see?

Well:

- The Smithsonians are free
- Adams Morgan is cool for food
- Vintage consignment stores

everything is really expensive. There is a little pop up Christmas market right near the Spy Museum though, mostly shitty native american jewelry and overpriced leather goods, but cool to check out nonetheless.

I was planning a trip in August for my birthday, and i was wondering where to go. I keep thinking japan or Canada but i don't think either are what i want, i was thinking of Germany but idk, would like a recommendation for a location to do some solo sightseeing or some kind of soul-searching, possibly even some kind of prostitute hunt. I really don't know but I have to give myself something to look forward to

Try Berlin or Amsterdam. The nighlife is supposed to be amazing in both of these places and they both have good cultural heritage so you shouldn't be short on things to do.

Is this trip possible? My plan would be to fly in, buy a car (one I can sleep in) in Portugal, and then sell it in Russia. I'm mostly curious if I could pull off buying in Portugal and selling in Russia at a reasonable rate of return.

The whole trip would be 3-4 weeks from A to B

The trip itself is easily doable up to the belarussian border. Belarus is very restrictive with visa but i suppose it's possible to get one, same thing in russia though less extreme. i doubt that you will be able to sell the car in russia and if you intend to leave it there you will have to get a lot of permits etc., work through tons of paperwork, possibly corruption and bribes to be able to import it to the country.
>>
>>1060959
I would go through Latvia and Estonia I think because I wouldn't need a visa for either. Is there a particular country closer to my destination I could sell it in? I was thinking I could sell it in Poland and then just take a train after that, but then again, couldn't I just sell it off for cheap in Russia too?

Do you have any advice for a 19 year old hoping to make money off his laptop and to travel a lot of the time? Or am I just being unrealistic with myself. Is it better to just go place to place finding jobs?

Is it too expensive to maintain the "travel life" and work online, should it just be a cheap place like SEA and go from there?

Has anyone managed to achieve this dream of mine? I'm not materialistic, i'd rather spend the time I have on earth to see as much as I can. I'd only settle down when i'm older (around 26-30) I've lived a pretty boring child hood and I need something to truly test me and to break my shell. The limits placed on me as a kid have really left me craving adventure.

I've ran a couple things online to make money but it was 200$ a month at most.

Anyone have any ideas where I can start, or rules I should establish for myself to be sucessful?

Background: I'm currently in my 2nd year of university here in Canada studying information systems so with that degree I want to branch out into a job that allow me to do what I stated previously, as well as my own ventures.

I just find it so intriguing documenting your life with a camera, working online and meeting hundreds of cool people as opposed to being a hermit stuck in your hometown, here in Ottawa it's a baren wasteland, nothing at all to see.

Sorry if this is convoluted. It can also be a general working online thread as well.

Wish I could offer you something more substantial OP, but when I was traveling through SE Asia, I hung out with a German guy who had been doing this for 6 years. He was really fucking bizarre, but he worked remotely in either programming or IT and relocated every 3-4 months. Your area of study is definitely useful here.
>>
>>1060846
how did you make 200 $ / month OP ?
>>
I am currently doing this in SEA, but I would not leave home unless you have at least 1000 bucks coming in each month + money for the ticket.

Protip: If you are a babyface young 'un that isn't completely ugly, the bad girls will throw it at you for free, unless you are stupid enough to say that you are willing to pay. Wear a rubber.

Hongcouverite here,

I'm taking my gf down to the states next week to visit family in Seattle for a day. We're seeing my relatives on the 23rd, and I've already been down to Seattle a few times with my gf so I want to go down to Portland and do a bit of exploring for a couple days. I booked us a hotel for 1 night in Vancouver WA so that we could spend 2 days down in Portland, 3 if I can find a better deal on hotels for 2 nights, but for now, it's looking to be only 2 days of exploring. For 2 days, what would you say would be the best places to visit in Portland?

I know 2 days is not that much time to spend down there, but it's mostly just something for us to do before we visit family. As much as I love outdoorsy type things, and I'm seeing a lot of that in the searches I've done, we will probably avoid them as I doubt the weather will be suitable.

I mainly would like to try do some things that are "unique" to Portland that I wouldn't really get anywhere else. I'm not looking to spend an extraordinary amount of money as I'm pretty strapped for cash going into the holidays. But just a few interesting places for us to visit while we're down there would be great. We will be there pretty early in the morning as we're leaving from up north at around 4-5am.

Any recommendations?

I have lived in Portland my whole life. Definitely check out the Hawthorne district, that is what most people think of when they think of Portland. Go to any McMinnamins establishment (though McMinnamins is a PNW thing, not exclusive to Portland) Eat at food carts, fuck restaurants. I'm only 20 so idk anything about bars and such but I hear Portland has great bars so definitely look into that. If you like book stores, check out Powells, it's honestly one of the best book stores in the country. Downtown is cool but be prepared to interact with a lot of homeless people because Portland has a shitload and that often turns off visitors. If you can stand to wait in a long line then check out Voodoo doughnuts. Go to the saturday market (open 7 days a week during holiday season) lots of cool crafts and stuff if you're into that kind of thing. Stay out of vancouver as much as possible because its a shitty tumor of a city and only exists because portland is cool. Hope this helps

Hi /trl/

I am going to Cuba for Christmas vacation (1 week). I was wondering how much it will cost daily and if there is anything I should know about traveling there ? Should I contact my government and let them know ? Do I need shots ? It's my first time leaving the country I'm a travel noob.

Thanks in advanced for the help

Where are you from?
Get your visitor card that is stamped on the back by a travel agency...

There are 2 currencies in use the CUC for tourists 1 CUC = 1 USD and the CUP currency of the locals you can also get but only use on markets or local shops. 26.5CUP = 1 USD

Budget depends on what you have already paid for and what you plan to do. Usually about 30 CUC will be good for food and getting around per day.

If you are american bring euros that will last for your whole trip. USD get a penalty fee and only a few places will exchange them.
If you're from europe most maestro cards won't work, Visa and Master might work.
US credit cards are not accepted anywhere (zero acceptance rate of Amex and Diners Club cards no matter from what country they're) also any credit card that processes trough a US Bank will get declined.

For shots:
Required is nothing but I would always recommend:
>The typical childhood vaccines (MMR & IPV & PCV) you will have anyway.
>DTaP at least get a Tetanus refresher every 10 years, in question get a TP refresher anyway.
>Hep A always worth it
>Hep B (if you just think about getting a hooker or might want to travel to SEA, Central and South America anytime soon get it. Hep B is a bitch)
In doubt, print it, show it to your doc and the knows anyway.

Amazing thank you anon.

I will be traveling from Canada. I have paid for the resort and flight. I am bringing my partner. I'll get 500$ in Cuc before going.

Should I be worried about spiders or anything ?
>>
>>1059550
No problem.

If it's a resort there's usually not much left to pay for most of them have food included. It's activities and that can be anything just take US prices as references you might get off a lot cheaper but yea. Keep a healthy reserve anyway.

>Should I be worried about spiders or anything ?
Not really, just the usual stuff:
don't drink from a fountain use bottled water for everything and the other thing are mosquitoes just bring a repellent and wear bright color cloths. (No real Malaria risk j4i)
There's a small chance of tropical storms but it's pretty low.

Is Dubai worth visiting? I am debating making a VERY long pit stop there for about 5 days on my upcoming trip. Its really the only Middle Eastern country I would feel 100% safe taking my wife to which is one of the main reasons I am debating it. However I feel like it lacks culture compared to alot of countries, which is something I do enjoy when I travel. Spending money and trying to look rich is not my cup of tea.

I was in your exact same situation and decided against it...

Only advice I can give you is to consider the opportunity costs, anon. What else would you be doing with your time/money?
>>
I'd recommend a stop over in Bahrain. What do you mean by culture. There is metropolitan stuff to do in Dubai, like plays and such. There are souqs and things too. Bahrain, Oman, and Qatar are just as safe and easier to access the culture in some sense, because it has a lower ex pat pop. Qatar is still pretty high, but not as bad UAE
>>
>>1062691
>However I feel like it lacks culture compared to alot of countries

very true. I wouldn't bother. or cut the trip to only 2 or 3 days. no need for 5.

What are your worst survival experiences? How'd you manage?
10 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
Flat tire in the middle of Death Valley with low gasoline and middle of the night around Teakettle junction. Maybe not so close to death but still a horrible experience.
>>
All my survival experiences have been good. Better than my death experiences.

My brother and I were rock climbing at Red Rock Canyon. Hung around on the top for a bit, took pictures, viewed what little of the Strip you can see from up top. It was nice.
Getting down wasn't as nice however. We were never in any serious trouble, but going up is always easier than going down. There were a few spots were we had to kinda convince ourselves to jump down, or I'd have to carefully get down, and then help him.

I didn't hear it, but my parents just hung around at the bottom and apparently heard someone scream out in pain about their leg, and thought it was one of us. We were more lucky than that guy.

No I'll be staying at hostels mostly. I'd just like to be able to keep like 7-10 days worth of clothes and everything else I need on me in one convenient bag.
>>
Off topic but if Backpacking another country a good way to lose some weight?
>>
>>1059563
After a while you're going to get tired of carrying more stuff than you'll really need to use. If you're staying in hostels just go full hippy and bring half to a quarter of that and wash it in the sink.
