I'm going to Las Vegas in March. With my dad and my brother. It's a birthday present for my dad.
I've already planned to spent one day driving to Grand Canyon.
What is a "must do" in Vegas? Funny thing: My dad would never gamble, but Vegas is on his "to do list"

>What is a "must do" in Vegas?
A show; You buy tickets for a show he might want to see. Buy them soon, so you get great seats.
Dinner. Make a reservation at a couple choices, and then cancel the one(s) he says "no" about.
Both of these can be expensive ^^ but that is indeed the point of vegas.
>Funny thing: My dad would never gamble, but Vegas is on his "to do list"
Don't consider it a key part of visiting vegas. But, I wouldn't ignore it like the plague. There can be some fun people watching that is entertainment in itself. So, maybe consider the casino a $20 piece of entertainment and do tokens for that, and enjoy a couple free drinks that pretty much buys back your $20. Then, at least you experienced everything. Of course, only if he wants to do that. Walk up the strip, and enter a couple of places that have interesting lobbies or which he has seen in movies.

I went last fall for the weekend, shows are good (pick any that interest the group) - surprise highlight of the trip was ATV riding out in the desert, there are 2 or 3 small companies that do it.

I enjoyed it because was getting tired of drinking and gambling/being indoors.

I'm going to NYC for a day and a half (arriving Tuesday evening and leaving Thursday morning). Besides a Broadway play Wednesday evening, I've got no plans.

I've been to NYC several times so most of the touristy stuff is out, although I'm thinking I'd like to go the top of the Freedom Tower. Any lesser-known or off-the-wall recommendations?

There's a fucking dope vegan restaurant that specializes in vegan foods that taste like their meat counterparts. I took my girlfriend there last year (we live upstate). We shared the chicken wings, I had a club, she had a chicken parm sandwich.

The point is I'm not vegetarian and almost never order something without meat, but this shit was good. Very inexpensive too.

It's called Red Bamboo. Hole in the wall joint not far from its subway stop, just across from NYU Law. Not expensive.

I'm planning week in Europe and I'm thinking of getting some Euros now since the exchange rate is pretty good.

How much walking around money do you guys take with you when you travel?
4 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
I'm not into buying unnecesary shit so just enough for some cigs, food etc.
Really depends on the prices. Just think about an amount of money that you can throw away without being seriously screwed for the rest of your trip.
>>
>>1063354
Geez, could you be more vague? No one knows your spending habits like yourself, or even where you are headed in Europe. Add up your daily meals, like google up some menus if you are that oblivious, or what kind of transportation needs you might need, and then add in some incidentals like a beverage stop a couple of times if hot, or coffee, and maybe a pastry or something you walked past. Maybe you buy local goods, who knows? I buy art, sometimes clothing or shoes, and at times, local gems if they are uniquely mined there.

I don't carry much walking around money unless I fear getting an ATM will be hard where I am going. I prefer not to have more than about USD300 in case of emergency. Instead, I go to ATMs for a good exchange rate taking out only what I need every 3 days or so, calculating that amount on the spot with the information only being there will provide to me, and kind of plan of leaving with 0 bills and coins left, which is usually gifted to the hotel maid and final taxi driver, or a small purchase at the airport like a bottled water, local candy and magazine.
>>
>>1063413
I think you misinterpreted my question, friendo. I was only asking people how much they personally take with them, not how much I should plan on spending over a week, I have that shit under control.

Hire motorbikes or a driver and go to the less touristy parts. Cheap and great fun
>>
Hire a driver for a day, it's cheap. Ask him to take you around. See stuff like the rice fields, the volcano, visit a coffee farm and buy the famous cat shit coffee, see the sunset at the temple of Tanah Lot, and other cool temples too.

Hey guys, wheather specific question:

I want to combine workaway somewhere in NW Europe with cycling there, in winter. Now i don't mind wet, i don't mind snow and col, but wet and cold sucks balls.
And so with recent winter being very confused, where in NW europe is there / are they expecting a good amount of snow ? say Jan. / Feb.
I know no one really knows what the weather is going to do so therefore my next question: where is it good cycling in winter NW Europe? Something like Denmark ?

There has literally been no snow at all this month in Stockholm, Sweden. It's kind of worrying to be honest.
>>
why do you want to cycle in snow?
>>
>>1062866
Because it happens to be that i have alot of free time (1-2 months ) during this time of year. So i don't choose for it but i don't mind snowy cycling either

Bilbao is very great. It's a modern city but so comfy, the casco viejo (=city centre) is very nice. You can take the furnicular to see all the town from a hill.
I've made the trip from Bilbao to Vitoria by feet, the landscape is very nice, and basque people are very nice.
Vitoria is less cool, not because of the people, but because it's little and there aren't a lot of things to do there, but you can visit the city centre which is quite nice.

Monte Igueldo.

You take a little funicular (cable-pulled) tram to the top of the mountain where an old castle sits. A very small amusement park is located there, which would be of no consequence, except for its roller coaster, Montana Suiza. It's one of the oldest running roller coasters on Earth and possibly the oldest with steel track. At one point during the ride you go past an edge where you can see down the cliffs to the sea below. It's an absolutely breathtaking hidden gem that no one really knows about.

Hey, aussiebro here.

Got a job offer to work a season in the oil rigs in Alberta, Canada. The pay is a little less than I get here but I would like it for the experience.

My question is, are there a lot of ethnics in Alberta? Like I want to hang out with my own people mostly, how bad is the muslim problem there? Is it full of chinese and indians? What are good towns to hang out in that are going to be mostly whites?

Sorry but if I wanted to be around ethnics I'd go to Bali

Hi /trv/,
eurofag here. Me and my gf would like to go somewhere warm in February for a week or so. As our budget is limited to roughly 400 € p.p. we cant fly to tropical destinations. So far we came up with two possibilities:

Egypt/Red Sea: You can get really cheap flights + hotels now but I figured theres not much to do besides swimming/snorkeling and for that the weather is probably a bit cold.

Marrakesh: Seems to be a very interessting city, but flights are a quite expensive.

Lisbon: City looks nice, flights are cheap but no t-shirt weather.

What do you think? Did I oversee the perfect place to go to in winter? Any suggestions are appreciated.

You won't be able to get into the Sinai peninsula depending on your nationally. Not sure if it's completely locked down anymore but Brits aren't allowed yet.

It's following the soviet jet crash. Things are completely cancelled for travel in and out of this red sea idea.

Tshirt weather is tough. But, you could enjoy some greek seaside or something with warm water, right?

Canary islands.
You can get super last minute deals like flight, middle class hotel or even all-inclusive hotels and transfer for 200-350€ p.p.

About 20-24°C, swimming, surfing, hiking, diving, even some pretty cool cities and nightlife is also ok around the year.

Hey /trv/, I have a flight to Bangkok on January 5th. I will be in Thailand (mostly north), Burma, Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam and China. I plan to spend about a month in each, maybe less for Laos and Cambodia. The flight back to my home country is on May 24th.

1. I read in travelfish.org that lonely planet's regional guides are "hardly worth using" compared to country-specific books. Should I leave my new copy of "vietnam cambodia laos & northern thailand travel guide" at home and buy a 2nd hand copy of each country's guide when I enter it?

2. I plan to buy sandals in Bangkok (Something lighter and more suitable than my hiking boots for everyday non-trekking activities). Travelfish recommended Teva's brand. What are your opinions? And where should I buy it?

3. I've been told I don't need to buy a new camera since Iphone 4s's one is good enough. Is it true?

Thanks a lot!

Only worry I'd have for using you phone for pictures is that you migjt not be able to have it juiced up on power when you need to take your great scenic pictures, where a camera doesn't dies out of battery in the same way.

If you had an android, you could just pack some spare batteries.

A battery pack for an iphone is bulky but probably a sound investment. Also get the extended battery case as well, couldn't hurt.

Thanks guys. Any insights about the first two questions?

Also: any ideas for where to see local music/culture in SE Asia? Authentic stuff I mean, and without it being in an expensive theater or too tourist-oriented.

Hey /trv/, can you recommend any places that are similar to the resorts in the Maldives?

I ended up flying there on a spur earlier this year. Work was slowly destroying my soul, and later that week after having enough of office shit I was on the flight. It ended up being the single most relaxing experience of my life.

I usually never travel back to the same place twice, but in 2016 I'm considering taking another 7-9 days to relax. Or alternatively, I would find something with a similar experience a bit closer to Europe: Sun, beaches, hot, not crowded.

French Polynesia would be a dream, but it's so, so far away.

And since I'm asking about the Maldives, a few pics from the trip.

For me: 12 European cities, 12 months

Anyone else up for this challenge? If you live anywhere in Europe, most places are on your doorstep. Long weekend anywhere is possible.

Where's good and when? Any tips? Lets get this going.

- I'd like to hit 10 new
countries this year. Mexico and Belize will be the first 2.
- finally hike the Camino trail in April or may
- after that, I want to see all my friends in Europe thst I couldn't see last year when I was with my (ex) gf
-Switzerland, Germany (old), Amsterdam (old), Poland, Czech Republic, Austria + maybe Slovenia again (old)
- hopefully get a contract in Toronto teaching kids to ride motorcycles in the summer
- finally work a season in Whistler
- fuck off to South America if that doesn't work out or go there after the season if it does

And forever on the back burner is the goal of working in the oil industry

Since I live in Paris as a Dutchman I have a lot of travel goals for France:
- spend a weekend at Mont Sant Michel with my gf
- go to Marseille and visit the South (Toulouse, Montpellier, Carcasonne as well but the main goal is to go to Marseille since I heard lots of nice stories about it)
- go to the Alps for skiiing (just came back from les trois vallees but the snow was shit)
- Visit the north with Lille as main destination or maybe go to Belgium for a weekend
- do a grande randonee 1 around Paris (or at least an etappe)

then outside France:
- spend time in the south of Italy, especially in Naples because of the food, maybe travel around a bit or towards the Rome and see some more culture
- get my qt girlfriend to take me to Poland, maybe go to Ukraine as well, since at this time it might be best to check out the country now it's at peace again. I don't speak any slavic language but my gf is Polish so she speaks Polish which is similar to Ukrainian (I hope)

To keep it realistic (I have a fulltime job, but I can easlity get time off) the trips around France are possible, but going abroad will mean that I either do the one to Italy or to Eastern Europe
>>
No resolutions.
Going on my first cruise with the girlfriend later this winter
Taking her to Texas to visit my dad's side of the family (we live in MN).
Those 2 trips will eat up a good chunk of my PTO but I'd like to do a (2nd annual) snowboarding trip, a (2nd annual) boundary waters camping trip and maybe a long weekend in reykjavik if I could.

I've lived in the bay area for 10+ years and go into SF to screw around and get good food all the time. What kind of stuff are you guys into? Off the top of my head there is a LOT of good coffee and some good pastries/bakeries if you're into that, and at least 4 really cool museums. Do you want to know the touristy stuff, or have you guys already done that?
>>
>>1065349
Hi from SF, and welcome. As far as vegan food is concerned, you will have no problems at all--we have more than a few all-veg restaurants, most all- or mostly-vegan, and nearly everywhere will have at least one vegan thing to eat. Herbivore, on either Divisadero in the Western Addition (between the Haight and Alamo Square, basically) or the Mission (Valencia and... 18th? 20somethingth? Between the 16th St and 24th St BART stations somewhere), is popular, reasonably tasty, all-vegan, and cheap. Valencia is also a major bar (and restaurant) corridor, so dozens of places to get drunk within stumbling distance. Lucky Creation, on Washington at Sansome in Chinatown, is one of a number of vegan Chinese places. Dive hole in the wall, but tasty food and no animal stuff. There are a few other veg places in and around Chinatown, and Asian vegetarian food (apart from Indian) is basically always vegan. Easy to get drunk in Chinatown and adjacent North Beach, too, in dives or tourist traps, as well as a few local gems. And if you don't know SF that well, that region is definitely worth a wander. Yes, Grant Avenue is mostly tourist garbage (although Li Po is a fun dive bar that sometimes has weird shows in its gross little basement), but Stockton and side streets have some good local weirdness. And North Beach has a lot of Financial District douchebags, and strip joints, but it's also got views history, and character, and an interesting underbelly.

Ocha has vegan Japanese. I don't like it but others do. Millennium used to be our fancy vegan restaurant, but it moved to Rockridge in Oakland (on BART, pretty good 'hood if increasingly yuppie). And there's a new vegan burger joint in the Haight-Ashbury, but I've never been.
>>
>>1065462
Sorry, brain fart. The vegan Japanese place is Cha-Ya. Ocha is a pretty good local Thai chain that probably has a vegan menu item or two.

What do you guys do about cell phones while travelling abroad for an extended period of time? I'm going to be staying in Japan for 9 months and everyone tells me to use a SIM card, but I'm not entirely sure how they work.

Once the phone is unlocked, can you just use any old SIM card from an electronics store? Does it have to be a specific one depending on my phone model and/or service provider?

>Once the phone is unlocked, can you just use any old SIM card from an electronics store?
Yep
>>
I may advice you to Google what a sim card is.
And there are different sizes of sim cards. Look up which one fits your phone and buy a local one
>>
>>1065112
Once the phone is unlocked, considering it is dual-band or matches the band that country actually uses, then the SIM card is like buying time on a local carrier, very much like a Cricket, Boost, or other no-contract phone company operates in the US on the charge-me-up kind of basis.

I also suggest you have a wifi capable phone if possible, and an App like Viber or Magicjack, and getting family/friends involved with that.

If your carrier does work in the country you wish to visit, sometimes it's less hassle to use it, and pay for some unlimited text messaging, and keep the phone turned off as your check-in device only. Think one-way outgoing, and 911 purposes, and you can control the costs. This isn't a bad idea if your goal is really just to occasionally use wifi on it, and text mom n dad that you got home safely each night, and where you'll be, check email and such. Then, use magicjack for actual calls.
