Hi, I'm planning on going to Serbia for vacation, but I'm wondering if it's safe, for a specific reason.

I'm Indian and I grew up learning that many Serbs hate Muslims. Though I'm not Muslim, you would probably think so if you saw me.

Will I get attacked or be avoided by the people there because of my brown skin or will they not care. Any precautions I should take?

It's a beautiful country and I'm sure it's filled with good people, but I just don't want any problems of that nature.

General rule for visible outsiders everywhere is you're as welcome as your money.

It isn't just about skin color or religion for them. A serbian nationalist would hate catholic croats more than any indian muslim. But most people aren't like that.

Indian like Punjabi, or more like Tamil? There's certainly some racism there, but being Indian could put you in a wide range of skin colors. There's a lot of swarthy serbs too. Even if you're dravidian you could enjoy the nature, but the lighter your skin the less racism you'll encounter.

If you stick with tourism you'll be fine. I wouldn't expect a warm welcome from women if you go clubbing, and maybe avoid the football ultras on match day.

I'd think the average indian would have more street smarts than most westerners who go there.

I'm certainly not white, but I'm no where close to South Indian levels of dark. I'm just in the middle and brown in the way that I can't pass off as white.

If I wanted to talk to the locals, would some get upset unless I look well off? What's the worst that can happen? Is a bar a safe place to go to?
>>

Thanks for the advice by the way.

heyas /trv/

me and the lady are considering traveling to Athens & Istanbul for a week in December. Anyone know how 'safe' it is to actually travel to these cities, presently. GF is a bit of a worry-wort about safety there... any help is greatly appreciated. oh, traveling from New Orleans.

What exactly are you worried about, in terms of safety?
>>
>>1172641
this is more about Turkey than Greece, but she read the warnings on the State Department's website concerning travel to Turkey and was concerned mainly about their warnings. ie. avoid large crowded areas like most tourist areas, kidnappings, etc.

She is aware of the attempted coup that took place recently and also the proximity of the current conflict in Syria and is questioning how safe it would be for western tourists. i am more of the adenturous type of 'let's see where the wind takes us.' both of us had our minds set on these two cities for this trip, but now she wants to look at options.
>>
>>1172528
Athens is 100 times safer then New Orleans. Istanbul is only half as safe as Athens but still 50 times safer then New Orleans.

What are your favorite places in the Alps?

I'm only sort of familiar with the Swiss Alps in the Bernese Oberland (just what I know from Rick Steves), but it looks absolutely amazing and now I am obsessed with the Alps, especially in regards to hiking.

I'm curious if /trv/ could offer their best tips and suggestions as far as where to go regardless of country; Switzerland, Austria, Germany, Italy, etc. as long as it is Alps related.

I like the French Alps because contrary to say Switzerland, Germany and Austria they are also close to the sea and thus the French pre-Alps really have an atmosphere and climate of their own, the Vercors region for instance (pic related), even though the highest summits are located further into the Alps
Here a nice video taken in the French Alps, from a shepherd https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a7GHAGnRCYI

Grindelwald and Lauterbrunnen are the best places to see and do what you're describing, as far as I know. I stayed in both and hiked a lot. Climbed one of the mountains off-trail, got stuck at the top, had to sleep in a rain shelter, goats were trying to get into our place, etc. Incredibly stupid. But it was the best memory I have of my trip to Europe. The Bernese Oberland has so much to see and do, if you're into hiking and the outdoors. Get there.

Hey /trv/, apologies in advance if these sort of threads aren't allowed.

Long story short, I've been dating a girl for a few months now via LDR and we're both at the point where we want to see each other to see if it's just as compatible irl. I was wondering if I could get some general discussion going on what's the best way to do it, information on places, etc. I've done a fair bit of research, but it never hurts to get multiple sources.

Brazilian, Olinda

At the moment I'm looking at flying there in May '17 for a month so any advice about Brazil is welcome, but I'm also open to suggestions of why she should come here instead. All up I've figured the cost of everything will be around 6k AUD to go there.

Im from Recife, heres my two cents:

Recife and Olinda beaches are dirty, ugly, and full of trash - dont bother spend more than one hour at the shore. Recife and Olinda, contrarywise to the rest of brazilian northeastern cities, are turned to the rivers, not to the sea.

So, yes, avoid the beach and focus on the center. Olinda is cool and interesting, and Recife has lots of history, but its dirty and stinky - the whole city stinks like shit and you will feel like youre in india. But check about Instituto Brennand, also, northeastern food is pretty good - try to eat authentic regional food and avoid tourist traps such as churrascarias.

I dont know how serious you are with this girl, but Recife is full of pretty, hot and bitchy girls who would be very happy to get acquainted to a australian guy - brazilian lassies really like european looking foreigners, if that is your case. So, if you can, try the night life or at least tinder.

To move around, public trasport in Pernambuco as a whole is a traumatic experience and taxi is a good chance for scam, so i would be using uber - its cheap. But avoid the rush time at all costs, recife has the worst traffic in Brazil.

To stay, hotels are expensive and mostly subpar, i would be staying on airbnbs with your miss - she will feel more comfy in the sexy time - being on a place that only both of you are in.

Will be happy to answer any further questions, just shoot!
>>

Thanks man! You're awesome.

Yea I learned that Olinda beaches are icky and you have to go up north to get nicer ones.

I have no problem with the smell, and yes authentic food was what I was looking for; I'd have her as a local guide so she'd show me the best spots to go to.

perhaps, but I'm not interested in hook ups. Even if I was, I'm not a conventially attractive guy, doubt I'd be given a second glance

I saw uber being advertised on here, that's a good tip. Thanks anon.

Already found an apartment not too far from here's that's fairly cheap for the month I'm there. This also means we can stay together as well as cook food together too.

What about her coming here? As a Brazilian, what's the biggest blockages to her traveling to Aus? Also, is buying a flight for her here possible, or does it get all fucky with the taxes shit you guys have in place?
>>
Glad you appreciated, my good man.

If you have the time and resources, try to go the nearby places, such as maragogi, porto de galinhas, maracaipe, joao pessoa and praia de pipa.

As for her going to australia, we brazilians need a tourism visa. It costs 130 aud and its not so complicated to get!

It is possible to buy from Australia, yes. When i lived in Brazil i bought tickets for my russian gf without problems.

Just make sure to buy a two way tickets, or she can be denied boarding. But thats a basic rule i dont need to tell you.

Any other thing i can be of help?

Pretty similar all over. Doha is trying to become the next Dubai, but it's still under construction. Bahrain is where all the Saudis go on weekends to drink and fuck hookers. Abu Dhabi is kinda like Dubai, and it has Ferrari world.

None of them are really authentic.
>>
>>1172606
AD is more socially traditional, and less tourist-focused. Though that is changing. I found it to be a nice change from Dubai.

>authentic

They are all absolutely authentic for what they are. Maybe you aren't interested in what they are, fair enough. Everybody can like different stuff

I am looking for an affordable mission trip to Nepal for the summer of 2017 (any length).

Does anyone have any experience with mission trips in Asia or Nepal? When I mean "affordable" I mean $2000 - $3000

>>
>>1171999
I suggest you to be extremely careful if you are doing missionary stuff. Some group of people have become extremely hostile. Some radical hindu group even encourages locals to be hostile towards missionaries. Seen some facebook videos of villagers humiliating missionaries but if you are coming as tourist you shouldnt have such trouble.
>>
I was in Nepal this summer. Just letting you know that it's the rain season in the summer months and it's gonna rain every day.

I would like to visit Italy and I have a few questions:

1) What areas would you consider unmissable? I'm already thinking about visiting Rome, Milan, Naples and Pompeii.

2) What is a good amount of time to spend in each city?

3) Is it much of a hassle to get into the Vatican?

4) Is it worth going to Venice if I have no gf and will be travelling alone?

5) Is there anything else I should be aware of?
34 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
>>1171929
1) Honestly, skip Milan. I don't know why so many people want to go there. It's a businessmen's city, not one for tourists.

>unmissable
Where would you get in, and from where would you leave? It's a big country, you can't just go from Rome to Venice for a daytrip.
At any rate, Genova is great. Central Italy hasn't ever disappointed me. Tuscany in particular is nice, but it gets very busy. Only Italians ever go to the Salento and it's very beautiful, but far away from everything else.

2)
>Rome
You can see shit for a week and still feel like you haven't seen a thing. Then again, seeing only museums, churches and fountains for a week straight might get boring. With a couple of daytrips to the countryside, you could easily stay there for 10 days or so.

>Naples & Pompeii
Three days, I guess? Never been a big fan of Naples.

3) Buy your tickets online. Yes, you pay €4 more, but I fucking hate queueing.

4) Y-yes? Why wouldn't it be? There's solo travellers all over the place. Not a lot of hostels or big parties, but it's very impressive.

5) Depends. Maybe, maybe not. Could be. Possibly. Vague question is vague.
>>
>>1171934
I liked Naples and I was there for a week. Totally crazy and dirty city though. You gotta be in the right state of mind/mood I reckon.
>>
There are only really three cities in Italy that are truly must see. They are Rome, Florence, and Venice. Of course there are plenty of other places worth a shout but it all depends on your time and money. As for Naples and Pompeii like the other posters in this thread and many travelers before have said, you really have to have the right mindset before going to southern Italy.

Okay so I came here about a week ago, and went to Las Vegas and all, and came back again, and I really think there's interesting stuff. The Metro is really nice, the buses and their schedules, the security, (I come from a very shitty country) Buuuut, I will just be here for another month, so... Any ideas or places to go? I went to CityWalk, And Universal Studies and all that shit, i think i didn't went in... But anyways I don't have much money and, actually I am more of a museum, literatury, weird-musicish guy. So, if you may, trolls.

can I rent a decent apartment for sub-€350 p/m for 2 or 3 months soon? I've got an unexpected window of free time/money so want to do this soon and only have a few requirements:

-must be able to rent on a short term basis legally
-interesting city/region
-not prohibitively cold
-friendly locals
-not too high a cost of living (food and transport basically)
(a decent amount of english speakers would be a bonus but isn't essential)

happy to consider at anywhere, maybe even outside Europe, but I'm not sure how realistic that is...?

I'm flying from Rome to Sicily in a few weeks. I'll have a week to spend on the island starting at Catania and ending in Palermo where I will fly back home. What should I definitely see? I really liked the run-down decadance that I encountered in Naples and I'd be down for experiencing more of that. Also I'm definitely going to want to go up Mt Etna. Any other ideas? How should I get from Catania to Palermo and how long should I spend in these respective cities?

Thanks.
