I'm thinking of getting into Savage Worlds as a multi-genre rpg. Any thoughts?

I've tried GURPS and it's too crunchy. I've tried FATE Core and it's not crunchy enough. Where does Savage Worlds stand on the spectrum?

Savage Worlds is cool. GURPS want to get things right in terms of being realistic. Savage World wants to optimize for fun. But in terms of its mechanical outlook, it's fairly conventional, unlike Fate and it's narrativist approach to things, where the players have their hands in the meta-aspects of plot.
>>
>>47253603
Cool, thanks.

The group at my LCG is open to new things, but they mostly do Pathfinder and 40k, so I think they'd number grind the shit out of GURPS and just shake their collective heads at Fate.

I'm thinking of springing a Weird West one-shot on them to see how they react to Savage Worlds.

Any weird quirks I should prepare for? The Bennies stuff and the Initiative Deck looked like they might take some adjustment.
>>
>>47253811
Init deck can be removed easy, just roll a d12, 12 is an ace, it's close enough.

Benny management is kinda integral.

I like to strip out even more of the system, personally.

Start off with just reading the basic set. You can skip the (dis)advantage/skill lists for now.

Use not everything without restriction, for along that path lies madness.

Use not only the barebones essentials, for that shit's pretty boring.

Figure out what you want to play using GURPS, and get the associated books. They usually have premade advantages and character options. Also, most of the stuff in the main expansions (Magic, Space, and the like) can be useful in any system, so you should get those anyways. GURPS general has most of the books.

What kind of tabletop RPG allows for a very anachronistic setting?

More specifically, I was thinking of an apparently medieval setting with swords and sorcery but that also has robots and modern guns popping up infrequently

The closest thing I can think of would be dungeons the dragoning, but maybe there are others that I don't of

Let’s have some Worldbuilding fun, /tg/. I’m running a 3.5 campaign (yeah, I know) that will quickly get to epic levels and I’m making a gnarly-ass world that I wish to be horrific and awesome. And I thought why should I have all the fun? Horrific and awesome are things that you fa/tg/uys do best. Let’s rock! If this goes well, I’ll be sure to archive it, and/or a 1d4chan entry so everyone can use it or take inspiration from pieces or the exercises.

So here’s the game.
>Every post for a race description, animal/monster species, location, NPC, whatever, is canon.
>People can play off each other’s ideas but the most awesome wins; we can put a vote for contentious things if people post at nearly the same time. Otherwise, be sure to read the thread.
>Feel free to grab anything off the map you like and run with it. Don’t feel the need to go strictly by book rules, be awesome. Just don’t be a retard or you will get vetoed.
If this goes well, I’ll be sure to archive it so everyone can use it, and/or a 1d4chan entry. The tone is aiming for a bit gritty and metal as fuck, legitimately threatening, and also not necessarily taking itself seriously so we’ve got some room for a little light-hearted fun and levity here and there. But I mean, there’s that map entry that’s supposed to be marked “The Dungeon of Awesome Madness” which simply cannot be allowed to not live up to that name, and it needs a world to match, but I’ll probably make another thread for that alone on another day. Also sorry for map being so hueg.

The context in this universe is most life-bearing planets are sentient. Each one chooses how physics/magic/whatever works on it’s own individual planet-self. This planet, Grimoria, is like an old man who walks in and steals the best work from other planets in disaster-mode and lets the survivors fight or die on its surface and encourages natural selection to take its course. Cont'd.

On this world, (nearly?) all humanoid races are from other planets and arrive through the Tower, which I’ll cover to get this party started. This covers all your 3.5 vanilla races and bullshit but feel free to jazz up your own and make this interesting, since we’ve all seen the vanilla bullshit and a lot of us are clearly sick of it. Also I’m not 100% on how I want to mess with magic functions but so far I’m sure that Raise Dead and similar magic might work without a hitch, or might produce highly unpredictable and truly horrific results. I was thinking maybe ley lines or areas of instability which produce random antimagic or wild magic zones. But I guess I’ll leave that to you folks. Side note: I haven’t restricted any books to my players for this, so I don’t see why we should start now. Also here's a book that I used for a few things on the planet so far.
>>
The Tower of Broken Worlds
The highest floor of this giant circular tower on the northern side of the inland sea is where all new species arrive. They always must proceed with the same ritual of descending the tower to see the stories of those who came before, and meet the gatekeeper (Hunefer, CR25 who may or may not have an 18HD mummy buddy with optional floor-based puzzles/traps) who explains they must build a new floor of the tower before they are allowed to leave. The highest floor is the 198th and is mostly completed, but the next arrival will be building the 199th.

The gatekeeper was the result of the 2nd resurrection attempt on this planet, and was cursed to never leave the tower but to ensure its continued growth for unknown ends. Every floor depicts various languages and many pictographs featuring natural and supernatural disasters on an apocalyptic scale, and almost always some suggestion of a portal or planar magic. Each floor is of slightly differing materials, construction and craftmanship but to the same specifications, and always leaving a staircase exposed to the roof, which will be the floor for the next newcomers. The tower manifests building materials for this purpose that are similar to what the new species is most familiar with.

Near the base of the tower is home to a large colony of mobile cacti that shoot boiling acid out of oozing sores and creep around and up walls but generally leave the tower alone. These cacti share a symbiotic relationship with a swarming bee-like poisonous insect that resembles an orange gem cut like a d10 when at rest.

Daham
Arabic-flavored city of arid plains, sitting atop a large hill crest overlooking the coastal valley and the Tower of Broken Worlds. Created by the most recent newcomers to the planet several centuries before. There’s a Formian hive somewhere in the hill beneath them. I’ll leave the rest of those details up to some other anons. Needs much more awesome.

The Scarlet Jungle
Second to last newcomers were a Druidic people and settled near the lake in the middle of a big jungle. They may be alive or dead but everyone else assumes they fucked up because now the entire northern half of the jungle is made of meat and very few things there are cannibalistic.

Animalistic trees, creeping toothed vines, carnivorous sundew plants, fanged roses; it’s nothing but miles and miles of a bleeding jungle continuously eating itself almost silently. Almost. No one has tried or even wanted to go in to see what else might be there. Because FUCK. THAT.

Also, feel free to come up with new locations entirely. On a planetary scale that's even laughably small realistically but good enough for game terms, those hexes are at least about 50 miles across so there's plenty of room. In fact there would realistically be far, far MORE distinct features of the map so go ham. And feel free to post world art also. Alas I do not have many images for fantasy.

I also favor stuff like pic related, but wanted a horrific welcome mat for the players.

How often do you insert religions in your settings that are more than 'sun god' and 'god of booze'? I'm working on a setting based in a semi-realistic renaissance era and I was hoping /tg/ would be my soundboard on the major religious division in the setting. I have a mild anxiety that players will challenge me with 'why is x' and 'that makes no sense' comments so I like to have a very well thought out setting before I even begin to assemble a party. Also I have no party and working on settings is as /tg/ as I get anymore.

There are two major religions in the setting, both of whom are based loosely off of one mythological event wherein a young widow, Pava Pola, is struck by a shooting star and becomes pregnant. The widow and her prepubescent daughter, Pava Maia, then wander an arid region looking for shelter, while the widow rambles about the stars and the nature of the universe in a sort of delirium. Eventually the widow gives birth to 100 fully grown men and dies in childbirth, leaving her young daughter to 'raise' these fully grown but naive men.

Both religions are partially guided by written accounts of the widow's musings about the universe, in which she explains that the universe is governed by an Assembly of Heaven, made up of spirits of great men and women who ascend and join the assembly in death. This assembly guide fate and decide on a great many things, meaning that to earn a place in the assembly gives one the ability to shape the destiny of everything. These musings, as well as a series of parables about the widow and her daughter's wandering, make up the Credenda Pola.

>>
Both major religions count the Credenda Pola among their holy scripture, though it is the significance of what comes next that splits the two religions.

The Maian religion believes that upon her death, the widow (Pava Pola) was chosen by the assembly as the perfect human and was struck by the stone to kill her before her eventual disgrace. In death, Pava Pola ascended to lead the Assembly of Heaven, combining all spirits that came before and would come after her into one cosmic entity. Her daughter, now her prophet, was to be protected by the 100 sons so that Maia could spread her mother (and later, her own) teachings. The Maian religion's other sacred texts are the teachings of Pava Maia and the laws she imparted to her brothers, stating that the daughter is the embodiment of the widow's spirit on earth. All major leaders of the Maian religion seek to trace their lineage back to one of the 100 sons or, in the case of the Great Mother, to Maia herself.
>>
The Atlan religion includes no mention of the widow unifying the assembly and instead seems to focus more on the idea that the stars represent wise beings that look down upon the world and seek to guide and aid humanity. Atlans believe that only by observing and understanding the movement of the stars can their will be divined. The firstborn son, Ibhan ik-Pava, would lead his brothers to catalog and identify hundreds of stars and constellations, believing that each held domain over various aspects of the universe, and to invoke the correct spirit was necessary to receive guidance or blessing. This knowledge, as well as the wisdom of both Ibhan and Maia, was collected into a holy text known as the Night Atlas, a text that is both religious ideology and well studied astronomy. As the Atlas grew in length and importance, the spread of this knowledge and the protection of the faithful became the goal of the 100 sons, known as the first members of the Crusade of Stars. Even in modern times, the Crusade is an important part of the Atlan faith, serving as warrior-scholars intent on understanding the will of the stars and spreading Atlan influence.

I like to imagine that she knows how to use a weapon, that she understands what she's doing is so terribly wrong.

But the cameraman won't let her look right.

He's not looking for "Grandma is going to kill someone." he's looking for "Grandma is a total retard."

And they've been fighting for like 20 minutes as she insists on taking more natural poses that make sense, and he keeps telling her "No, look stupider. Look like you've never held a gun before."

And she's just fucking pissed, and she's starting to wish the pistol was real.

2e or 5e might be a decent alternative. 2e is more straightforward and it's easier to say no to splats. 5e hasn't had time to really bloat out yet, and has plenty of rules that say 'the DM can totally say no to this'
>>
>>47252561
Isn't that pretty much exactly what 5e is?

Help me create a great, unique, but still very evil villain.

The last several campaigns I've run have been very morally grey, with the antagonists being evil but not EVIL. I've decided that I want the villain of my next campaign to be a black hearted, conniving, self-serving, society destroying undead lord, but I don't want to sacrifice the intrigue my players have come to expect from my campaigns.

What motivates this villain? Is he ancient, or only a couple hundred years old? Perhaps he is creating an preparing to create and undead army, perhaps not, either way he's biding his time, why?

I'm not afraid of tropes or ideas that are difficult to DM, things like "chosen one," macguffins, time travel, evil cults, complex political intrigue, its all fair game. I just want a unique and memorable villain that manages to be totally black and white evil without being stupid or forgettable.

Undead lord who has been secretly ruling the realms for centuries has decided that the farce needs to come to an end. Starts turning his powerful puppets into things which can spawn more undead under their control (bodaks, shadows, wights) which spread his dominion at an exponential rate. The undead retain their personalities but are evil. They demand to be taken just as seriously in the senate/wizards guild.

Alternately, a fallen Druid "blighter" who uses natural energy as fuel for his spells and controls hordes of animal undead
