What character backstories do you see alot that make you cringe? Myself: The cleric or paladin looking for redemption from their god

I utterly hate this backstory. If your looking for redemption in the eyes of your god, then from my point of view, you've fallen from grace with your god. Which, again in my view, means you should be a ex-whatever class you chose and shouldn't have your classes powers.

Also this backstories tends to attract people to play moopy/depressing/sulks-in-the-corner characters.

So what exactly are the "angels" that show up in the Lothric Castle lore? Are they Primordial Serpents? Are they Pilgrim Butterflies? Lamentations of the Flame Princesses' historical setting takes it away by far for me. Shitty guns, strange spellcasting and the wierd world of the 1600's just makes me a happy camper.

Alright OSR, I have an...opposite question.

I'm only versed in OSR. LotFP, B/X and DCC are the only systems I've ever run. OSR is my preferred style of choice, but my group of players (who aren't tabletop gamers normally) I feel like they're going to feel restricted after a while if every fantasy themed game we play is the same 7-Class option. And I know for some of them, their character permanently dying all the time is off putting. They wanna create a PC and build it up over time. They want to be a Ranger or a Gnome and short of homebrewing rules for that into my LotFP game (and causing the one RAW-autist to explode), I can't provide.

What more 'modern' system would you recommend me? 5e? Pathfinder? Shadow of the Demon Lord? I need something that's relatively just as easy for a beginner to pick up as B/X or LotFP.

Specialist. And tell the autist to check his autism, because houserules are what makes the game fun.

I'm going to be attempting to GM Shadowrun for the first time in two days, using Roll20, but I don't know much about the actual lore beyond playing SR:R, and I'm substituting the system for a simplified one of my own creation that's a bit more like XCOM.

Here is the session plan.

>Four independent rookie Runners meet at a designated location, briefly greet eachother before being approached by an escort
>They are driven to a local mansion and meet the Johnson
>Short exposition about an Aztechnology research facility that was abandoned and locked down after a containment breach
>The facility was actually built directly under the mansion, and the Johnson is looking for a team to go in and wipe the place clean; data and surviving subjects included, because he's getting paranoid about it
>They go inside and see some of the experiments, most dead, some still living-ish
>Soon reach the central command console, Decker will presumably try to wipe the data as requested, but access will be denied
>'Facility override initiated'
>All of the cells containing the research subjects abruptly open
>Party must hold off the abominations while the Decker struggles to bypass security and force a regionalized lockdown, the only option is to lock themselves in rather than lock the monsters out
>Once that's done, they must explore deeper into the facility
>Eventually come across three corpses
>Find out through investigation that they were a previous shadowrunning team, and the fourth member is missing
>Decker can find out through datajack hijinks that the fourth member is a demolitions expert and had some hardcore C4 in his pack
11 posts and 2 images submitted.
>>
>More exploration
>Eventually becomes clear that the Johnson isn't an Aztechnology guy at all, but a madman who is hiring Shadowrunners not to kill the monsters, but to feed them
>They later stumble upon the demolitions expert fending off a wave of enemies, must save him
>He joins the party, and they learn about a structural weakness towards the back of the facility
>They make their way there, and have to fight through another horde to reach the back wall and blow it open
>They can then storm the Johnson's mansion, kill his men and him and pry the reward money from his cold dead hands

My question is, how can I make this more accurate to Shadowrun lore and/or spruce it up? Alternatively, general feedback? I'm nervous.

So I'm planning a neutral evil bard character.
A very charismatic fellow after money and power.
He's the middle child of a barely noble family, took the life away from battle to focus on learning about the ways of diplomacy, arts and power dynamics in politics.

He's definitely not above stealing, maiming or killing to satisfy his greed. He's more a sociopath/manipulator. Not a depraved psycho. Pragmatic yet power hungry.

I'm still working on the backstory but I'm not sure about what are the skills he should have.

Weapon of choice?
He would probably rather have strong friends to defend him.

I'm thinking of the inspo being a Griffith (berserk) character but I can't match them stats. So I'm dropping the master swordsman...

Have you ever played any character like that?
Halp.

Also I haven't played D&D sience the early 90s what I missed?

>>47312768
Playing an evil character, huh? Is it an evil campaign? Cause if it's not, it might be tricky. A lot of DMs don't even entertain the idea of evil characters in their game simply because of how potentially disruptive they can be for the rest of the party. I would ask your DM first, and maybe the other players too, before devoting a ton of time to it.

Also, what edition are you going to be playing?
>>
>>47312825
Well this is what I'm trying to figure out. I'm not really interested in provoking petty fights.
I'm just really trying to play some character that us truly looking out for #1 and any other alignment seems lacking.

Playing someone that can't decide to take a slave here and there or engage in some "off screen" torture seems very limiting.
Edition is probably 3rd.
>>
>>47312970
Talk to the other players first before you decide to go full evil. If someone is playing a paladin, or any character that strongly opposes evil, it's going to devolve into a petty shit flinging contest.. And you're gonna be asshole for bringing an evil character.

If you absolutely want to have the freedom to do everything without having to worry about anything, there's always Chaotic Neutral, but once again, it has a rather nasty stigma attached to it.

The big problem is, by their very nature evil characters tend to clash against a typical party. Now, if you're all just mercs looking to make a buck, evil character will be fine! But if it's a typical, heroic, adventuring party.. Not so much.

If it's 3.5, from a mechanical perspective, bards aren't the best. However, I'd recommend sticking your skill points into social skills (especially diplomacy).

This Gas'n'Go is set in the New Mexico desert out in the goonies, where the "towns" are trailers huddled around gravel road intersections and it's easier to get a loan from the patron than the bank.

When Brent, the baseball loving cashier, and Cleatus, the gentle redneck gas station attendant-cum-wrench monkey, arrived the usual dust storm kicked up once they clocked in, stripping away the smooth yellow of the desert and replacing it with burnt ochre sand and a fertile, fiery red full moon hanging fat and low in the sky.

The first few hours went fine--the Gray Man made an appearance and got his candy bar.

At around 11:15 PM a short bus full of Cub Scouts showed up.

The troop leader, Mr. Jim, stumbled out of the bus with baggy, bloodshot eyes and asked Cleatus to fill 'er up. Cleatus, being a gentle redneck, delegated this task to the small children.

Once Mr. Jim entered the Gas'n'Go with a gaggle of hyperactive Cub Scouts trailing behind who immediately scattered through its bigger on the inside interior. He immediately purchased a red steering wheel lock, left his card with Brent and $60 on the desk for the kids to pick up snacks.

Mr. Jim asked if Brent and Cleatus would mind keeping an eye on the kids while he used the restroom. For some reason he took the lock bar with him to the bathroom.

By 11:35 Brent had put the fear of god into a few children attempting to pocket candy bars and Cleatus was amusing himself by telling the children stories of gasoline ghosts roaming the desert goonies. The cashier had also had to turn away some children attempting to buy a few age inappropriate items, including:

At around 11:40 Brent a wave of convulsive coughing fits hitting the kids, though his attention was mainly focused on a poorly maintained chest cooler filled with the strange meat the skeleton fishermen delivered every Tuesday. A handful of scouts had opened it up and were eating handfuls of raw meat.

Outside Cleatus decided to check in with Brent about Mr. Jim, who he hadn’t seen return, while the cashier was fondling his baseball bat. They both decided it was about to be one of those nights and while Brent was given the task of clearing out the children Cleatus went to check in on the troop leader.

>Cleatus knocked on the door, "Y'all right in thar?"

>"Occupied!" Mr. Jim shouted through the door.

>"It's been twenty minutes, fella, you fallin' in or what?"

>"Uh..." Then came a telltale click-click-thunk of the anti-theft bar being extended and set against the handle. "You guys might want to hole up in the break room or something, it's about quarter 'til midnight."

>"God fucking damn it, Mr. Jim! I ain't yer fuckin' baby sitter!" Cleatus futilely attempted to unlock and open the door before deciding to drop it and catch up with Brent.

Hey guys I'm new to MTG. Could I get some opinions on how to best build a deck? How many lands, creatures, etc. Thanks for the help
20 posts and 3 images submitted.
>>
>>47310681

The exact spells-to-creature ratio kind of depends on the colour you're playing - green needs creatures more than blue, for example - but a good rule of thumb is that your deck should be about 60% creatures/spells and 40% land to ensure a consistent mana curve.

Why are d20 systems the worst systems?
24 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
>>47310611
It's not even close to the worst. The Palladium/Rifts system for instant is both clunkier and has even more imbalanced. It's just that d20 is everywhere. So anyone who doesn't like it can't escape it, and ends up hating it.
>>
>>47310611
Because D&D caters to too many people wanting everything to be jammed into one system that was never intended for most of the shit people run it for.

It's designed by committee for a product that was only meant to do one thing, these choices affect almost every in every game that uses the d20 system, and the ones that don't suffer from the d20 systems problems are so far removed from it that it would have been easier to start from scratch.

Based chinaman ltd.

In television and film we have the great ability to watch things from an outsider perspective, which allows the viewer to watch the bad guy do his bad thing, have character development, and have cool scenes where the main characters aren't directly involved. Take No County For Old Men for example. What if the only time we saw the antagonist was when he was seen by a main character? He wouldn't be nearly as interesting.

Anyways, the way this is /tg/ related is I want to know how the best way to use this narrative style is in tabletop? What is the best way to build anew antagonistic character, when the players can only see the antagonist when they are around?

I usually write out short stories and then pass them around to the players if they are interested. Sometimes it's something the player knows and the character doesn't, but usually I try to find an excuse for the story to reach their character in-universe too. Either by a video recording or something like that.
>>
>>47308209
OP here I used to do that, but turns out I'm not a very good writer. How long were your short stories? Mine were like 4 pgs
>>
>>47308249
It varied. If I just wanted to write out a brief meeting between two characters it might only be a few pages. If it was something more dramatic or drawn-out it might be closer to twenty or thirty pages. I tried to keep it as short as possible since I didn't want to pressure my players into reading a book. They seemed to really enjoy it, though.

In your setting, what happens when an impossible even occurs?

What happens when:
>An unstoppable force meets an immovable object
>God makes a rock so heavy he can't lift it
>etc.
34 posts and 6 images submitted.
>>
>>47307979

If we're talking The Elder Scrolls, you either figure that shit out or you realize you're impossible and that the universe has no underlying order or natural state and disappear due to apathy.

In my own, there aren't true absolutes like Immovable, Unstoppable, Omnipotent, and the like outside of the theoretical, and all beings or forces have limits, though some of them may be beyond the physical. Being or forces claiming such titles do so mostly out of vanity, and while their power may be immense, it's absolutely not absolute. Much of what could mess with the universe's laws is either self-regulating in its manifestation, sensitive to interference and so dispels under adverse conditions, or otherwise resolves through interaction with opposing or interfering forces, rarely it does so violently.
>>
>>47307979

Reality is breached in that area, and the chaos between realities leaks in, causing mutation, psychosis, monsters, suffering, and other phenomena.

Too many breaches could cause one of two outcomes:
>One of the infinitely vast Elder Gods drifting between realities takes notice of the reality in question, dooming it.
>The boundary of the reality is strained beyond its limit and breaks, thrusting the entire reality into the space between realities, and everyone is mutated, driven mad, killed by monsters, and generally has a bad time before/during dissolving into the chaos.
>>
>>47307979
>>An unstoppable force meets an immovable object

The force is deflected but never stops.
