Hey /tg/ I want to run a campaign based entirely around having the party surviving in an exotic wilderness and fighting off and hunting mystical creatures Monster Hunter or Pikmin style. Any recomendations for ideas, systems, or plotlines that could work?

Also dump images of exotic locales and creatures I could use if you could?

can't help you too much with mechanics, but here's a weird elephant and a website with a bunch of wayne barlowe paintings https://waynebarlowe.wordpress.com/

it's kind of hard to do a story for that kind of thing without making it super video game-y. it'd be helpful to know a little more about what kind of tone you want. hunting down giant monsters could be anywhere from really goofy and cutesy to bleak and miserable. there isn't a huge difference between pikmin and shadow of the colossus or dark souls other than tone, really.

Get Mouse Guard.
It was made just for you.

My advice: remember that fighting giant monsters can be so much more than just introducing a monster with "huge" in his title.
I did a Dragon's Dogma game in Mouse Guard and It worked.
Big monsters should be like big questlines. Divided into stages. So the first one could be about circling around the beast, dodging It's attacks. You prepare some stage hazards, perhaps a whole table for them and once in a while, you just throw them at the players.
Not only they need to somehow avoid the stone walls of X, sometimes they can use them for their advantage.
That's plain forest vanilla. You can prepare whole scenarios, hunting the same monster can be completely different close to the cliff's edge, a lake, a bog or some ruins.

Ive been working on a campaign with a similar setting, its was inspired by the eldritch horror in nature thread that happened about a month ago on here.

The idea is that basically mankind has been industrializing and nature is striking back with strange creatures and nature spirits that are spiteful to man, i've been looking at the shadows over Esteren books as what i might run it on but its been slow reading having to separate mechanics from the fluff.

Often times, in Monster Manuals and Bestiaries, I'll be reading a description of a Monster, and I'll come across this line:

"This Monster preffers intelligent prey to animals."

Why exactly is that? What quality do intelligent creatures have to animals, as far as consumption goes? Is this just a hook to use the animal as an enemy in a quest? Also, in real life, when you hear about a person getting eaten by a wild animal, they always say something like, "They have tasted human blood, so now we have to kill them". I always thought this was just a turn of phrase, meaning the animal has to be killed for the purpose of justice and revenge. But, do animals actually gain a preference towards certain prey?

Pic unrelated, I think.

>>
>>47274847
I'm pretty sure intelligent prey have tastier brains.
>>
>>47274847
In monster manuals i guess its just a hook to use it against players

In real life as far as know. By tasting human flesh/blood an animal learns that a human is edible and tasty. Therefore it can be hunted/attacked just like any other prey. So the next time it is hungry and sees a human it will try to eat it. I guess thats why they kill it. Because you cant make them forget the taste of human. You might be able to suppress their instinct but not totally get rid of it so the chance of that animal attacking you or anyone else is still there
>>
>>47274882
Well, I was thinking about that too. Would human flesh have less of a "Gamey" flavor?

Works better for smaller games. Big ones like DnD and Pathfinder have way too much variance in the playerbase.

Hey guys, I'm doing a graphic project related to the Underdark soon, and I'm hunting for images I can use for it.

I need pictures of Underdark terrain, particularly any with lots of stalactite/stalagmite formations or mushrooms, like this.

Google Images has shit all to offer, so I'm soliciting you guys for any and all Underdark/Drow-related terrain and scenery artwork.

I had a 4e game reach into the late 20's.

3e always seemed to fall apart in the teens.

I vaguely remember some higher level shenanigans in 2e but was a long time ago.
>>
>>47275063
Yeah 3e/Pathfinder starts to fall apart in the teens because of how ridiculous shit gets.

The time is the present and the place is New York City, one of the biggest metropoles in the world. The PCs are a collection of normal, run-of-the-mill people who have been forced to take one of the last trains of the night bound for their destination. The game begins with everyone realizing that they'd nodded off for an indeterminate amount of time, and that they'd stopped at an old subway station they've never seen before, deep, deep, deep below the streets of NYC. Their goal is to try and work together to return to the city's surface, but what they'll discover is that they'll have to traverse a darkly mystical urban underworld to do it.

What locales will they visit? What sorts of people will they meet? What scenes will they stumble onto? What dangers will they face?

>The subway tunnels both coming to and going from the station the PCs awaken in appear to have been walled off with concrete and steel, making the arrival of the PCs and their train worryingly mysterious. What's even more worrying however is the fact that the stairway leading up to the street has likewise been sealed.

>The PCs find themselves followed or perhaps stalked for a time by the figure of a man bearing a very bright light like a miner's lamp on his person. The figure always keeps its distance, but projects extreme feelings of disquiet and menace whenever he is spotted.

>Eventually, the PCs reach "Deep Downtown," a large, populated station that acts as the capital of the Urban Underworld and is a place at which the PCs may be able to hire a guide to lead them back to the surface.

Gods being empowered by belief or prayer in some fashion seems to be one of those incestuous tropes that persists mostly because copypasta fantasy authors are cribbing it from each other repeatedly (and maybe from the SRD in particular) despite it making no fucking sense. So I ask you, /tg/:

1) How did it start?
2) Why is it not dead yet?

I'm asking #1 both because I'm curious about where it first appeared as an academic matter, and because it might be that there's a good original take on it that's just been turned to shit like the billion Drizzt Drou'Clones.

I'm asking #2 because it's so fucking stupid almost every time I've seen it, e.g.
> personal sincerity does matter, Purity Sue is powering the single strongest goddess by herself
> personal sincerity doesn't matter, gods conspicuously refraining from doing anything that would get more worshipers
> one-off buddhist expy ancient tribe has prayer wheels that also empower gods, prayer wheels somehow not spammed by every priesthood
> present day urban fantasy, mortals can ascend to godhood this way, pantheon is not clogged with televangelists/celebrities/internet memes
> children of gods still being born gods despite the fact nobody could have heard of them, let alone prayed to them

So many of these authors seem to have taken "gods are powered by belief" as their background assumption and never thought about it any more than they thought about their setting having a sun, they just ran with it. And yes, I realize that most of these could be fixed in theory if you writefag at them, but the writers hadn't done that when I read them.

Most of the non-stupid instances of this I've seen are the ones deliberately playing it for laughs: Oolon Colluphid in H2G2, Banjo in OOTS, or Discworld in general. Apart from comedies, I find that 40K of all things does it best, and while 40K certainly isn't a comedy, it's still not exactly serious. So are there any instances of this concept that are both serious and not shit?

Gods don't just need prayer, the nature of gods is changed by prayer. What is believed by the majority of a god's worshipers to be true about a god will become true. Godly personalities can be entirely rewritten this way.
>>
>>47270229

All I can say is that in regards to point 2 I really can't see any other good reason than for nurishment that a god would care about people worshipping him.
The only other reasons I can come up with is that they want people to worship them because they are extremely insecure or two or more gods are having a competition about gaining the most followers/praise for some reason or other. Both of those seems a bit silly tho.
>>
>>47270355
I think you're kinda proving the point, because your "fix" has just made it worse.

Step 1: convince majority of your followers that you're the most powerful god
Step 2: convince majority of your followers that your nature is now fixed and not changed by majority belief anymore
Step 3: profit
(optional step 0 preparation: reduce your followers to the most gullible)
