Is throwing a dragon at the party just too cliche these days? I feel like it's "oh woow a dragon, who gives a shit" at this point. Is it just boring?

Depends. If you do this in a VtM game, it's more of "what the fuck is wrong with you asshole?" but in D&D you might need some buildup instead of just going "poof! a dragon! have fun now poofters!"
>>
>>50241188
that depends, what narrative purpose does the dragon fill? What does its presence say about the world and the characters? How does combating it affect the personal growth of the PCs?
>>

>Is it just boring?
Only as boring as you make it.

Part of it is not giving any context for your game's violence, just slapping enemies down on the battle-mat and expecting fun to happen.

Your current game's setting has come to the attention of Emperor Dornkirk, of the Zaibach Empire. To complete his Fate Alteration Engine, his visions tell him that something in your setting is required.

The armies of Zaibach are great and use fantastical machines. Hundreds of floating forces carry its troops to where they need to be, and the armies of footsoldiers are aided by legions of Guymelefs. Towering metal warriors piloted by skilled knights, Zaibach Guymelefs can transform into a flight mode for travel, used liquid metal weapons that they can fire as retractable spears across dozens of meters or shape into any melee weapon they need, can spew flame in great gouts, and elite Zaibach Guymelefs can even render themselves completely invisible, and even attack while doing so.

But most dangerous of all are the destiny science machines operated by Dornkirk himself. Zaibach machines don't just allow the emperor to see the future, but to alter the fabric of destiny itself. Its an imperfect process, but the Destiny Prognostication Engine lets him see the future with great accuracy, only thwarted by the actions of others that can do the same. An example of his power, and its current limits, are his Enhanced Luck Soldiers. They died from the treatments after only a couple of battles, but during those fights they were invulnerable. Any warrior that raised a weapon against them suffered immediate misfortune, their weapons breaking or jamming such they they were rendered harmless just by being too close to the Enhanced Luck Soldiers and all of their skill failing them.

If Dornkirk succeeds in his plans and get what he needs from your world, he will be able to change the destiny of entire planets at a whim. The last such people to possess this power could even will new worlds into being from nothing, though they eventually destroyed themselves by using the power carelessly.

What can your party do to stop such an enemy? And what is it in your setting that he is probably there for?

Firefly.

If you can handle the setting (you really don't need much) you can do it with Savage Worlds.

As an exercise in how little you need, here's a copy of Mini Six. One of the settings in the book is pretty much Firefly with the serial numbers filed off.
>>
>>50236833
Aside from the generics - GURPS, Fate, Risus, Lasers and Feelings clones - there was an official Firefly RPG. You could also adapt Dogs in the Vineyard pretty easily.

Not sure if any of the games will let you play a big, gay horseman though.

Mutants and Masterminds General Thread. (1970's edition)

>What is Mutants and Masterminds?

"Mutants & Masterminds, or M&M for short, is an adventure roleplaying game in which you, the players, take on the roles of fictional superheroes having thrilling adventures in an imaginary world. One player, the Gamemaster, takes on the job of creating that world and the stories for the other players to take part in. Together, you create your own tales of heroic action and adventure, like your favorite superhero comic books, television shows, or movies. You don’t need any expensive computers or video game systems to take part though. You just need a book, some friends, and plenty of imagination."

The game is currently in its 3rd edition.

The 3e core book recommends the GM make secret rolls where appropriate to determine what the PCs do and don't pick up on.

I've never done secret rolls against character stats before, only to determine background events that may or may not end up effecting the party. With these sorts of rolls it was relatively easy to disguise what I was doing because the timing of the rolls gave few to no clues to the players what I was doing secret rolls for.

But when you are rolling against PC stats as they enter or move though an area, time becomes a context clue.

what I'm asking:

-Do you think secret perception rolls are a good idea when GMing?

-How do you make it harder for your players to guess what you are doing secret rolls for?

This game is being played with an online group but advice for when GMing IRL groups would be appreciated too.

I am considering using a phone app to roll secret dice so that way I don't accidentally post secret rolls in the chat, and I don't have s separate tab or window competing for real-estate on my monitor when I already have so many documents and notes open in addition to the chat window.
>>
About to run my first M&M game with very poor understanding of the rules and general IQ.

Any tips?
>>
>>50233586

Has anyone here experimented with drug based superpowers with withdrawal side effects? I'm thinking about making a detective character who grows a plant that when taken enhances perception and reflexes and can grant the user minor bullet time, but when they are not on it is interferes with their focus and causes minor but persistent audio hallucinations resulting in a base penalty to perception and a variable penalty to audio perception.

most of the time he's off of it (because he doesn't have the know how or means to grow enough to keep a constant supply plus he's trying to keep it a secret.)

Before I went further I thought I'd ask for advice and insight from anyone here who may have dabbled in drug fueled superpowers before.

As someone who's played it extensively... the short answer is that the ideas are good but the rules get in the way more than they help. Be prepared to basically bend the rules or freeform alot.

Biggest criticisms (keep in mind I'm judging the second most recent version because the actual most recent one is still incomplete):

-Overcharge builds up wayyyy too fast. To the point where you won't want to use alot of your coolest abilities due to the overcharge cost.

-Mutations. See above. Fuck mutations. Fuck having your character potentially ruined forever because you got too much ovcercharge. Some of the stuff on the mutation table will seriously change the entire "element" of your power and ruin your character concepts.

-Poor/no separation of combat and non-combat stats. Basically you have to min-max your character's personality traits to have good combat stats because.

-Class balance sucks. Basically Priestess (support) is best at absolutely everything. Knights (tanks) are useless. And Sorceressses (offense) are overcharge generators. Powers follow the same trend, with some being INCREDIBLY useful, but being weighed against powers that are absolutely useless (every movement ability in the game).

All of these are manageable with GM fiat, and the system works fine outside of this... but that doesn't really excuse these big issues unless you're super into the idea of playing a magical girl game and don't want to learn GURPS or some other system.
>>
>>50183662
>>50183568

I'd add onto this:

Magical Burst is designed for a very, VERY specific sort of game. I wouldn't use it for 99% of Magical Girl games, let alone generally weeb games.

It's like AdEva in that way. It's designed to play one specific sort of game (And that game might not actually line up with how the genre goes)

The creator seems to have given up on it sadly, as the latest version has been incomplete for over 2 years now. Reading the creators blog, I'm not sure if it's just because he moved on to more slice-of-life styled games that I don;t really care about, or if he couldn't figure out good ways to resolve the problems >>50183662 mentioned, as they were pretty essential parts of the mechanics.

It's a damn shame, I was looking forward to a new version enough that I almost considered becoming a patron of the guy, but he just seems to have forgotten about the project completely. There haven't been posts or updates about it in forever.

>>
>>50255111
But back then Lisa Stevens hired MMO developer Ryan Dancey to develop the Pathfinder MMO, in spite of Dancey's horrible track record with games. This was a purely personal move because they're old friends. It's one of many bad decisions that basically led to the state Paizo is now in and why I left.

Pathfinder Online was developed by the independently owned (but Paizo-backed) company Goblinworks, and Paizo invested a VERY substantial sum of money in the company. Way too much.

So as a result of this investment, there were no bonuses allotted to salaried employees that year. I wouldn't be surprise if they're still denying everyone their bonuses.

Goblinworks failed to deliver the promised product and, in spite of months of us trying to warn upper management that Pathfinder Online was fucked, the plug wasn't pulled on Goblinworks until the 11th fucking hour, way past the point of being able to salvage the company. By this point Paizo pumped so much money into Goblinworks that they were entering financial dire straits. The Goblinworks folks tried but Paizo just gave the fuck up, which I can't blame them for. It's way too little too late.

Paizo became so short on finances that they were unable to maintain the development of the VTT software or essential upgrades to their proprietary forum/store back-end.

I heard that since my departure Paizo's started to intentionally delay payment of contractors (artists and freelance writers) in order to juggle financial burdens from month to month in a pretty blatant breach of contract.
>>
>>50255132
Nah man I've heard some of the last she shit is thousands of dollars per contractor. Some past-due payments wouldn't even be delivered if the contractor "didn't notice" and as a result some payments were out more than a year because folks didn't notice they were getting fucked.

Oh and get this. Following a change in the way salaried employees hours are tracked in Washington State, with regards to overtime hours, Paizo cut salaried employees hours down and assigned them additional contracted "freelance" work to make up the dividend. Paizo employees often work 12 hour days (or more), for an average of $35,000 annually with few benefits. And that's on the high end of salary.

Not counting Erik, Lisa and Vic

Pathfinder product lines are a constant juggling of resources. This is what culminated in the decision to develop the 2nd Edition of the Pathfinder RPG I mentioned before

Pathfinder v2 (or the Revised Edition of the Pathfinder RPG) development started in-house a while back and substantial resources are allocated from other departments (normally handling campaign setting, player companion, and other product lines.)

Increased financial burdens meant that no additional staff could be hired, obviously, meaning salaried employees were effectively working double shift to meet project deadlines. It's almost like in other games companies isn't it?

After I left Paizo it was pretty clear their diminished revenue lead to an increased reliance on licensed products (comics, novels, audiobooks, teleplays, etc). Starfinder RPG looks and sounds like a pretty blatant marketing scheme for licensing. I'd bet Pathfinder 2 either became Starfinder or Starfinder is a stealth beta for what they were working on with PF2.

There's so many other glaring problems I could mention like the GenCon industry insider fiasco which blew me away when I heard a it it. But, frankly, I'm tired of it. "

Could human civilization survive at its current level of sophistication (I.e, easy worldwide communications, general spread of liberal, democratic ideas, etc) if there was to be a sudden population drop of about 90%?

Assume population drop is even worldwide (no country is hit harder than any other) and that reason for drop is a quick killing plague that disappears after infecting and killing the 90% of humanity vulnerable to it.
261 posts and 21 images submitted.
>>
Society would no longer exist as we know it. Our current capability to produce the resources that we do is based off of a large world-wide work force that distributes these resources via trade. Some countries harvest more basic resources and sell these to countries with more sophisticated means of production that then use those resources to make a variety of products. With a 90% drop in world-wide population, most of the means of harvesting base resources as well as producing more useful goods would practically disappear at once. Worst-case scenario, the remaining 10% fight over what's left until a larger society is formed to protect their remaining resources and to attempt to rebuild the previously lost society. Democratic ideals would be lost very quickly as control and safety are prioritized over freedom and self-determination. In the end, human civilization is put back a couple hundred years, and eventually we catch up. Might be better that it had happened in the end, as the newer society isn't dependent on policies that are self-destructive in the long term.
