So, I've been running Pathfinder games for years. It's nothing new to me. I quite enjoy the challenge of trying to create fun and interesting encounters and dungeons that are both difficult and fair. The problem that seems to be most prevalent, however, is that martials, when built in a proper fashion, deal far too much damage. Let me give an example
I'm currently running a game with 8 people. The party consists of a paladin, a fighter with 7 int that THINKS hes a paladin, an oracle, a zauberer (3rd party version of magus that swaps wizard base for sorceror), a hunter, a swashbuckler, a warpriest, and an alchemist. Things were going fairly well; the party was getting along nicely, and everyone was contributing. This was, of course, before combat came into play. Once combat began, it became very clear that certain characters were viable in combat and certain characters werent. The paladin, fighter, and warpriest all dominated, dealing heavy damage and dispatching foes with ease, while almost everyone else was breaking more or less even with the oponents. This is not the first time this has happened; in many previous campaigns, players with only a small amount of experience were able to create massively powerful martials, such as barbarians and fighters, that invalidated most encounters, while their party members languished in the background. These players also usually push to solve every encounter with violence, knowing that they are powerful enough to handle the consequences, regardless of who they offend. This is not so much a problem if the players agree to avoid building in those directions, but many classes seem specifically tooled towards these goals. Cavalier, for example, was able to reach 225 damage in a single crit at level 10! This is easily enough to anihilate almost anything they would be fighting, with the only real solution being to throw something at the cavalier that the rest of the party cant handle. Other than fudging it, how do you solve this?
>>50229636
Martials aren't OP, casters just do shit for damage. Also, the base magus does ridiculous damage when played right.
P.S. this is bait
In the remote case of this not being bait, lower your players. 8 people are a fine number for 2 groups; if that isnt possible stop throwing 1 big enemy at them at time, if they can dish out 300+ damage in a single turn, make it so they have to fight against multiple enemies, and balance their foes with melee fighters, ranged combatants and even 1 Support/mage class if necessary.
This might work until their caster reach High levels then you are again in deep shit.
>>50229636
That only half your martials are a problem points toward the real cause being three of your players (guess which ones?) like munchkining or simply copied some online optimization guide, while the others just made characters or didn't understand what they where doing terribly well.

It does happen. I'm reminded of the one half-elemental giant guy in that early DA novel where the Falcons invade Skye.
>Guy critically wounds some Stormhammer soldier by punching him in the face because the scrub called his mother a clanner whore
>The rest of the squad all pulls their guns on him and calls the CO to deal with this
>The giant is all blubbering when the guy shows up
>"I didn't mean to hurt him that bad. But he shouldn't have said nothin' like that. Me mother was a saint."

DH2E, my players have discovered the joys of Accurate weapons, and now roll around with 4/5th of them carrying sniper rifles, except for the melee guy. It's pretty amazing how many mods they can stack in their favor for shooting.

I don't know for sure, but they certainly don't hate me enough to not play in my games. They keep coming back, and some even thank me for running the game, but that might be out of obligation.
why does the forgotten realms setting feel like such a cheap caricature
It does until you actually go beyond the quick blurbs and actually learn about the setting.
It's truly an incredible setting, with many of the best game designers of the Golden Age of Settings fighting each other for a chance to write for Faerun. There's decades worth of lore, where even a single country might be more fleshed out than another game's entire setting, and while some of it can be quite hit-and-miss, it's quite easy to argue that somewhere in Faerun there is something for anyone and everyone.
Having Tolkien in mind and as the comparision, well, then it simply is a somewhat, and I have to say even mostly, cheap caricature. Greenwood and the others are just amateurs, mostly without aesthetical, dramaturgical, logical and literary education or, if so, then at layman's level. Nothing in the realms really was thought through, nothing was constructed in a manner and quality of a man of the craft, art that is. You, therefore, are not mistaken, in my opinion.

Because these are the only people you hear about.
So I'm new to DMing but my players are all new to dnd. My plan is to give them a rude awakening about traps and how checking for them is necessary.
They're just about to attempt to clear out a kobold infested mine and I need traps to set for them. What's the best/most creative trap you've seen?
the classic, pitfall leading to a gelatinous cube
>>50203917
You didn't specify, so now your thread will be filled with nubile young men in skirts, unless /tg/ suprises me and does the decent thing.
if you think it's necessary for them to learn this for your games and you actually want them to take something from it, as opposed to just being pissed off, I'd go for something that sounds really cool and does a bit of damage, but doesn't wipe them out or cause any major pains in the ass (having to waste hours hauling someone out of quicksand or taking a huge detour from a blocked-off passage or whatever)
like a huge, but old and rusty axe blade that swings out from behind a statue of an ancient hero, or something simple like that. save the really creative/devious stuff for instances when they are checking for traps, but maybe not where they need to be, or as carefully as they should

Floors is an interesting game currently supporting more than 30 players. Processing one turn a day , Runners work together to find and reach the stairs to the next floor while outrunning the Malebolgia.
This isn't so much an advertisement but I tend to question if this is the path we should keep going on or eventually cap the game @ w @
anyways this thread will be here for now while we take a break before the next thread.

If a player hurts a boss or does an action that would yield boss cred on a floor, but leaves said floor, only for the same boss to follow them to the next floor, is the claim to boss cred still valid from the previous floor if the boss is slain on the current floor?

didnt draw, but here's my party
Our chainsmoking lasgun specialist with a fear of climbing - died killing a dozen bloodpact like goddamn Rambo round after round rolling like a champ as the DM tried to railroad him an escape he refused (climbing a ladder).
A mumbling operator that went blind from a friendly fire incident and had bionic eyes. Kills himself using plasma weapons – DM intervention made him mostly bionic. Died from drowning and some hilarious rolls
The clumsy stormtrooper that was never in the right place to use the damn flamethrower. PC could not comprehend positioning. Tanked grenades and a missile launcher shot from encamped cultists and then forgot he was equipped with a flamethrower. Made a famous hellpistol shot that shouldn't have hit in pitch darkness, and 1v1'd our friendly NPC Inquisitor guide in a fist fight. Died to being left by the party in an underground lab and killed by nurgle zombies.
Breacher operator (Tallarn) that demo charged himself - rerolled and killed himself the next TWO sessions in a less than heroic deaths. Piloted a Sentinel when dropping into zones. Has never sustained a hit from anything but his own doings – except the grot that crit him with a pistol when attempting to sneak in.
Sharpshooter aka the TF2 Sniper and about as much consistency showing up late as Larkin's mental state. Didn’t make some sessions, had the chainsmoker take his place and control him.
Field medic that RP'd being afraid of chaos dreams - rerolled as a psyker – died, and we got the field medic's brother back with the same stat sheet.
