I like the level design so far. Some of the shit feels spooky as fuck with the random noises. I guess thats more sound direction though.

Looks like you can buy a bit of time by closing doors as well but Stealers can force them open

It looks fun but the enemy and weapon graphics need a lot of work.

But seriously, it amazes me how often players become dumbfounded when an enemy uses charms or illusion on them, despite them doing ALL THE TIME to NPCs. Apparently anything that's not blasty magic or summoning is some sort of sacred taboo that NPCs aren't supposed to be able to indulge in ever.

I don't know about you, but I have a hard time thinking of stuff like this by myself without a map. A map contextualizes things and can make good (or at least placeholder) ideas just spring to life.

Get a map and then look at it, then think about what geographical areas would give rise to certain kinds of races and cultures.

I don't like to think of any nations as really "co-existing" but rather "putting up with each other because of reasons". I treat most scenarios with a 4X sort of mentality.

Here's a scenario: Let's say there was a prosperous human civilization with a giant mountain range nearby full of pissed of leopard people who live in caves and fight with stolen blades, stone knives, and magical ice javelins. The leopards come down the slopes to raid every so often to take wood and food (since nothing grows up on the mountains). The leopards can't move down the mountains into the flatlands because they can't assault walls and their magical ice weapons melt after a few hours in the heat. The humans can't push up the mountains because it's too difficult and there's no loot up there worth taking.

Eventually, the humans bribe a large tribe of leopards to settle the foothills and grant them the land and cities in return for fealty and protection against the other tribes. The new rulers of the foothills move in, intermarry, and eventually create a new breed of creature (here you can throw in your weeb crap).

After writing this, I realized that the leopards in this scenario are just Pic related.

Have there be shit ton more gold in that world or just make it so that Dragons don't have an obsession with fucking piles of loot. Aside from that, nothing really keeps gold from being used as currency.

They are somehow less creepy than the party's allies.

I mean, a young girl who's carried on her father's work caring for treants and other creepy walking plants, an Alraune who may or may not exercise a subtle control over one of the two Alchemists, an amnesiac Wax Golem, a Grippli meme Druid, a monotone-speaking Elf Treesinger Druid, and a Wolf Shaman Druid who is just not smart.

And these are the ones HELPING them against the Fungus Queen who wants the artifact under the town, not knowing that the last hero to visit the place found it and switched it out, but no one remembers because everyone's memories are being stolen.

There was also the hungry Dragon Turtle, but he died in three rounds.

Really, it's a ten-car pile-up of evil plans, and somehow my players are more creeped out by the other good guys.

What are some ways to get out of combat utility that aren't spells or skills?

Yes. I had a good game for 1 year. Then one guy had to drop out for family reasons. The new guy I recruited was so instantly hated by everyone else that they all dropped out within 2 sessions. We eventually reconstituted the group without That Guy after a 6 month hiatus.
