Magic has been around since 1993 and during that period there's been good things and bad things.
What were the absolute worst and most stupid things WotC did for Magic during its history? Let's have a thread with some discussion.
I'll start off with the blatantly obvious one. A set constructed fully top-down by people who did not know the gameplay element of the game very well, also hampered by heavy restraints from management. Homelands was such a disaster they implemented a special tournament rule to FORCE people to include Homelands cards in their decks and push sales. Despite some small references to Ulgrotha in today's products like Planechase and Duels of the Planeswalkers, Homelands remains maligned to this day.
So what are your favorite MtG boners? It can be a single card, an expansion, a mechanic, or anything. It can be art, mechanics or flavor.
>>52980981
Top down is concept first, mechanics designed to match concept right?
I'm not a MtG player, but gimme a couple examples of bad top down Homelands cards, I understand the game and have played casually enough to understand if you show me.
>>52981003
That's just buzzwords. The real reason is Homelands was a weak set.
>>52981003
Yeah, it means that they sat down and constructed a story, then came up with ideas for cards which would be "flavorful" and then tacked on game mechanics onto those cards. That approach need not be bad by necessity, it's just that with Homelands the people making most of the cards (some were made by the playtest group that would later fill out R&D) didn't know enough about the mechanics aspect to make them work.
To grab just one example, they started out with the idea of a giant oyster which a creature would get trapped in and slowly suffocate under water. All well and good, but the way the card is costed combined with its 0/3 stats and the agonizingly slow way it kills makes it a mechanically terrible card. And this sort of thing is all over Homelands.

You're about a month too late for any feedback. It all boils down to the fact that no sealed product is worth more than what you pay for it.

Amazing face cards
Cards not really valuable
They finally included thick cardboard deckboxes that can hold sleeved cards
Unbalanced
If discounted, it is potentially a good buy for dicking around in kitchen table or to get Jhoira for EDH
>>52980523
The might deck can pull some fast wins if you get some decent draws, but has the chance to stall if your draws are shit. The mind deck has some fun interactions with storm and suspend working together but can have a hard time actually finding pieces when you need them, and can't really defend itself.
Hey Yu-Gi-Oh players. I haven't played the game in several years and I was wondering if they ever made it so the DEF stat wasn't pointless? What I mean by that is if you have a monster that's ATK 2500 and DEF 1500 it's in practice the same as having a DEF of 0. It seemed to me that until the DEF stat of a monster started approaching 3000 it might as well have been nothing.
Meanwhile in Magic the toughness stat is extremely important. The difference between a 5/4 creature and a 5/1 is colossal.
Also Magic vs Yu-Gi-Oh thread I guess.
>>52980117
When a monster attacks a face-down monster, the difference between attack and defense is inflicted as lifepoint damage. Also, certain monsters have a trample effect where they can inflict lifepoint damage when they attack a defense-position monster.
>>52980135
When I played that only happened with a small number of cards. Effect monsters whose gimmick was they did that.
Are you saying they changed it to just a normal rule of the game now?
>>52980154
That's just shit he be spewing lad. It's not real.
And it'd actually be pretty bad because it'd take away one of the few of protecting your lifepoints if you're on the receiving end of a shit stomp.
Anyway if we're going to have a MTG vs Yugioh thread why not actually try to figure out a way to have a the two games actually play against each other?
Feels thread?
It's stupid. And beautiful.

Eh, I've imagined a bit different ending (not fokken xeno one)

>inquisitor and several marines standing with intimidating faces
>awkward silence
>"is there a xeno child named anthan on this vessel?"
>child comes forth when heard his name
>"I believe this belongs to you?" And shows soulgem whitout changing his emotionless face
>amused child takes the stone.
>"also, here's the blanket"
>child happily runs away, excited, that emperor fulfilled his wish.
>confused eldar guard still cant realize whay just happened, so just mummbles "uhm...thanks(?)"
>"eh, whatever" says inquisitor and leaves with marines.
>elder craftsmen are looking at eachother with "da fuck" faces.
>even in grimdark, good aspects of human nature reveals himself time to time
It is known that the Golden Hoarde slapped Europe's shit in the 13th century, but I'm curious about how Mongolian style warriors would fair against Knights of the reniessance era, the 1500s, in full articulated plate. I imagine their arrows would just plink off, and while their tactics of retreating and feinting would still be effective, it would be a zero gain for either side, with the Horse Archers unable to kill the heavy knights and the knights unable to catch or engage the much lighter horse archers. Is this accurate? I want to know because reasons pertaining to my OC donut steel setting, and no.one replied to that thread so I figured I'd jump right into a historical vs since /tg/ loves those
>>52979076
Mongols wouldn't give a shit about heavy cavalry either way. They just avoid the heavy cav, scare the shit out of the infantry, sack the town and move on before the knights have even got their armor on.
Heavy cavalry are no threat to light horsemen, and its pointless trying to fight them with light horsemen. You just ignore them, or bait them out of the way - use a small unit in front of the heavy cavalry as bait, get them to charge and then kite them out away from the areas you need to attack.
Mongols probably avoided pitched battles anyway and just raid shit and move on before any army could catch up
>>52979416
>Strategy video games are real life
Also mongols took entire cities in the middle east and europe they had no issue at all with large pitched battles.
>>52979076
They'd just shoot the horses bro. The 1500s knights didn't go into battle with full cataphracts armored horses.
My second session of the Jojo Game begins tomorrow.
Help me brainstorm plot and battles.
In the previous session, stand user Nole Nalestrom fended off an assassination attempt by stand user Feel Feesh, then both teamed up to stop assassin Officer Beasty Boy. They discover that the two of them have been under surveillance, as well as another individual named Joshua Joestar. Beasty Boy tells them that since he failed, more assassins will come, and the two rush to warn Joshua Joestar of the impending danger.

I'm thinking about getting into 40k, and I want my first army to be Guardsmen. I also know for certain that two units I'm getting are going to be Nork, and either a model to represent Colonel Greiss, or, if I can't figure one out/use one, Commisar Yarrick (and just put a tiny hat on Nork, since Greiss gave his to him when he retired.) My issue here is pretty simple. I don't know what to actually USE for Greiss. Does a model exist? What's the price? What codex? If not, can you guys recommend a good substitute?
>>52978191
There is no model that I know off, but it would be that difficult to make one of your own. A simple headswap from the Company Command box would probably see you off alright. Paint their hair to be greying and you're good.
>>52978191
Oh, I almost forgot.
Welcome to the War, guardsman.
Wow, thanks. Can you make any suggestions for other units I might want? I know Nork and Greiss are going to be pretty costly, but I'm hoping to center the army around a few Bullgryns (for heavies.) I've never really built an army or anything, so it's all new to me, and without an actual physical codex to read, a little hard to figure what's worth buying and what won't work.
So I'm writing some fluff for a post Apocalyptic game I'm designing & I want to rename Columbus Ohio something cool because Christopher Columbus is a shitty person. What would be interesting? My only idea is Renaming it Columus, which isn'the that exciting.
Go spaghetti western and rename settlements after concepts that are relevant to the players. For example, in that one Sharon Stone movie, the town is called Redemption.
>>52978137
Could always name it Amerigo, since, apparently, Amerigo was way less of a shitty fuck than Columbus.
