Why do people treat science like a religion?

The point of science is to allow empirical observation to inform your ideas, yet I talk to lots of people who hold "science" as some infallible divine mandate while rejecting empiricism.

I feel that science has become trendy and people who don't understand the basic premise of the scientific method just want to use an appeal to authority to justify their own opinions.

Science has done more for the world than religion ever has. I'd rather pray to a textbook than some deity.

from what i gather, modern math is entirely based on his papers, which he wrote 300 years ago. we STILL fully teach his definitions without modification as a starting point for college students.

I got one night of programing ahead of me and I'll need something to blow steam off when I'll have enough.

So Iets try to open athread for anyone who's got general questions on geology, or more specific ones, or just want to discuss it.
I more specialised in intern geophysics, but I'll try to answer anything.

do you know any cabin-monkeys (mud loggers)?
Is this a common job for geologists?
>>
>>8476781
I don't know any personnally, but I'm more into research than industry.

from what I know, mud logging is one of the cheapest and easiest well logging techniques as it require neither the preservation of a core nor to have probes in the drilling arm.
Therefore, it became a very used technique in the industry, so, basically yeah, it's a quite demanded job.

Do Ivy League colleges get you the top tier jobs? Internships/gpa aside
5 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
Estimate the number of jobs you think top tier.
Estimate the number of graduates each year from all Ivy Leagues.

Compare them. Does it make sense?
>>
>>8476639
In jobs that aren't engineering they provide a strong boost to your resume
In engineering they don't provide a boost in that sense because experience > education
however universally Ivies provide you the opportunity to easily get internships and co-ops compared to other colleges.

It is better to go to an ivy over other schools however except for shit like law and finance where your options become limited the advantage over lets say the top 40 colleges on USNew's university rankings isn't very significant job-wise.

http://colleges.usnews.rankingsandreviews.com/best-colleges/rankings/national-universities/data
This is what I am referring to, for top 40 just start at UC-Irvine/Tulane/RPI/Northeastern/BU and go down. Those 5 are all tied for 39, it makes it so there is no number 40.

I want to build a low cost bioreactor that grows bacteria/yeast cultures... currently they are extremely expensive. Trying to understand why they are so expensive

probably because it's a special blend that is likely built/curated per order, and not a mainstream one that is mass manufactured and buyable at any supermarket

Let's say I have a sequence of random variables [math] \{ X_n \}_{n \in \mathbb{N}} [/math].

If I want to prove that there is a [math] j \in \mathbb{N} [/math] such that [math] X_j \in A [/math], is it enough for me to prove that [math] \mathbb{P}( \forall j: X_j \notin A) \to 0 [/math]?

>>
>>8476431
I'm not so sure about that. I would say that that convergence shows that probability of existence of such index j tends to 1.
Ask on stackexchange for safety.
>>
>>8476431
No.
>>
>>8476431
wouldn't you want to show that the probability is 0? Convergence doesn't mean that it will become 0 and I don't even know for what variable that you take to infinity you would have convergence.

We have a bonus physics question in my physics 210 class (no credit. It's just a test prep question). It asks about the mass of Jupiter determined by the orbit of Ganymede.

Another bonus question (a bonus question of the bonus question) it says in the notes 'In order to determine the radius of Ganymede's orbit, someone needed to measure the distance between Earth and Jupiter. How can Earth bound observers measure this distance?

I would initially suggest paralax but since both Jupiter and Earth are orbiting together I can't see how that can be useful.

everything's given in the problem to solve it, it's just a curiosity question at the end of the problem.

I guess to reword the question would be 'how did the renaissance scientists discover the distance to Jupiter'

If you have access to a targets DNA, you would more than likely also have access to the target.

I guess CRISPR would be an incredibly niche method of assassination.

No?

Say you hacked a federal DNA database.

I signed up for an astrophoto citizen science project and they said you need at least an 8 inch dob. But when I look at what is actually observable through it, it seems to be extremely underwhelming.

Hello fellow astrophotography enthusiast!
Astrophotography is a very fun niche, if you want to learn more about it, I visited the reddit /r/ astrophotgraphy side bar which has useful information, and their are countless tutorials online. Instead of getting a telescope and mounts, I would learn how to make photos with a simple DSLR camera, understand ISO's, different types of exposures, and such, then I would move up to telescopes, but that can get pretty expensive. Taking pictures in an urban area is not that good, so leaving the city is always best, for new photos.

One of my first photos.

Tell me about the current administrator of NASA /sci/. Is NASA better off with out him? Is he even qualified?

Why don't you people go and read something for once? Besides what do you care there's no hope for NASA anymore Trump is going to get just another uneducated moron to run it. And I hope he does because we need straight forwarding thinking people in office not nerds.
>>
Regardless, Congress wont be increasing their spending anytime soon (where the majority of the blame is put on republicans - but a lot of democrats too, for not increasing NASA spending)

they need someone who has worked at NASA in many fields over the years who actually fucking knows how it is ran and has a clear vision for the future
>>
NASA is a big joke. Moon landings are a lie and Space does not exist.

Social Sciences are still /sci/, right?

I want to learn how to produce high quality qualitative and quantitative researches that offer insightful analysis on our lives.

Where do I start? Any good online courses on Coursera, Edx or wherever I should check?

Because we probably aren't the subjects of the simulation. We just happen to exsist in it as a result of simulated particle interactions.
