I'm self-studying Spivak right now and I don't quite get the solution to this exercise. I used this resource and looked at the back of the textbook and they were substantially different. Can someone explain what they are doing compared to what I am doing?

All you need to prove is that the thing on the left of line 3 is equal to the thing on the right.
What you did is assume it was equal and fiddle it around until you got something obvious. Not only is this (technically) wrong, it's a waste of time because you don't need to touch the right hand thing ever.

His answer is essentially just the same steps as the left hand side of your chain except he didn't expand everything into a mess for no reason.
>>
>>8484673
Its not wrong if all the operations are invertible, which they obviously are.

>>8484645
All things done to solve this are essentially the same, just show the n+1 version is true, given the n one is. Its a purely algebraic exercise.
>>
>>8484702
Not wrong in the specific case where you only use a string of invertible operations, no. But it's wrong in general, somebody who (likely) does not know precisely what an invertible operation is will not be aware to guard against errors when they do show up, and it's a trash way of writing mathematical proofs.

Some guy discovered recently that the form of the scales actually help snakes to slide at the quantum level at a huge percentage.

Scales are actually kinda awesome, I wish I had a link.

Hey /sci/, what's a good book on quantum theory and different interpretations of quantum mechanics? I really want to get deep into the fundamentals.

For context: I have a B.Sc. in Physics and taken classes in undergraduate mechanics, quantum field theory and general relativity.

What if the earth were filled by vacuum inside it? What would happen?
6 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
Hypotheticals that don't make sense are not worth answering because it couldn't happen. That's like asking what if the oceans were made of jelly instead of water, or if clouds were made of cotton candy. It's a fantasy. No need to waste the brain cells thinking about it.
>>
The ground would suddenly shake, and the sound of the largest Dyson vacuum thought possible would fill the air. Your intestines would be sucked out through your asshole into the center of the earth, until the almighty Dyson was filled and content.
>>
>>8483681
It would attempt to collapse on itself(Unless it was made of a strong enough material that it wouldn't).

Also, gravity along with the vacuum would be forcing the earth to collapse, so there's that as well.

How do you cope with having gone to a lower status university than you could've handled and doing a subject you didn't like and not being able to change due to being in the UK and being aged 24 knowing you have never done anything intellectual in your life? And having practically given up on your degree with over a year to go, handing in the absolute minimum to get a 2.1 (acceptable in the UK)?

Feels awful man. When I go through stuff in my own time, whether it's academic or not, I feel awful. Learning PHP is trivial. Learning maths for physical sciences (my uni missed out tonnes of stuff) is trivial. The exercises in SICP are trivial. I don't mean that I am finding everything easy- I mean that if I do this stuff it is not an achievement in any way like a MMath from Cambridge or a research paper in a scientific journal or creating a programming language or framework would be.

I'm implementing stuff in Lisp from SICP when Turing was literally inventing the theory behind computer science. Learning PHP is easy but I haven't done anything near as smart as the guy who created PHP (and the guy who created JavaScript did it in about a week!).

There's nothing to stop you applying for Part III at Cambridge. The same goes for creating a programming language.

If you're really so much better than your university then head over to the library and start applying yourself.

Sage for shitting up my board.

Lol wtf faggot. You asked for it.
>>
Fuck university if it's not helping you. Go to the library, get a book and start going. Prove to everyone how good you are. You can either continue to feel depressed about a lack of accomplishment.

Take this advice from Donald Trump. Think big. Some people are afraid of success and don't take risks or dedicate their time on things that they're afraid of failing at.

If you're at rock bottom then make something. Stop relying on others and your school and do something. Start learning now. Make a language, whatever you want. Prove to the to universities that you're qualified. Just stop sitting on your ass if you have so much potential and are complaining about not using it.

Trust me friend. Think big and don't be afraid of winning. If school is useless to you, then drop it and take it later if you have to. If you do this like make basic programs, play around with code or flip burgers, no one will hold that against you. If you do nothing then people will certainly use that against you. Be a self-made man if that's what you need to be. If you have skills and potential to create, then either create with them or spend the rest of your life on /r9k/ and /sci/ talking about them.

not been diagnosed yet but i'm 100% sure i have advanced pancreatic cancer at the age of 25(symptoms are ominous and numerous without other explanation-constant satiety, lower back cramp, smelly, fatty stools +mild constipation) and will be diagnosed some time next week after a CT scan, i expect it to already be in my liver and perhaps, and be stage IV. i've also had foreboding in the form of eerie dreams (often associated with pancreatic cancer). on average only 1 person in my age group is diagnosed with this kind cancer per year in the UK so despite the fact I have smoked over the years and binged on alcohol at times I still consider myself incredibly unlucky. i recently had a colonoscopy for colon cancer which came back all clear but the point is I still KNOW i have cancer, i just considered pancreatic too rare. My mum and rest of my family are going to be absolutely devastated and in all honesty I really don't want to fucking die

anyone know how i can cure this shit?

I got Thyroid Cancer at 18 turned 19. Had to have both sides removed then do some radiation treatment because it was believed it might have spread.

1) Calm the fuck down.
2) Smile and stay bright, personality affects health.
3) Let the doctors do their job. If they don't seem efficient go to another hospital.
4) If you gotta die, you gotta die.
