I was thinking about curvature(k) a little the other day. If the circumference of a sphere changes, from lets say C to C+1, should the curvature change in respect to the circumference at all? Or should it remain constant. I was thinking we could use the point ((C/2pi), 0,0) and ((C/2pi)+4,0,0) to describe the 2 changing points and constructing our r(t) curve, if following the curvature formula after finding T, the curvature would not change at all. Is this true? I've never seen any problems like this and I was just wondering if it's even possible to find curvature change in respect to the circumference of the sphere.
If any of you geniuses can give an answer that'd be great.

lol Christ I'm a moron, I just remembered k=1/R. So smaller spheres have much larger curvature and visa versa. sorry /sci/ I din't need you after all.
>>
What a fucking retard...
>>
>>8477856
Why +4? I'd just do (rcos(t),rsin(t),0)
Differentiate twice to get -(rcos(t),rsin(t),0)
Then the curvature is
1/sqrt(r^2(cos^2(t)+sin^2(t))=1/r
So the curvature has an inversely proportional relationship to the radius, and therefore to the circumference. This makes sense since a large circle starts looking like a line locally.

Out of all the planets in the Milky Way that contain life there is a handful that contain intelligent life. Out of all the planets that contain intelligent life there are few with advanced civilizations. The most advanced civilization lives on the other side of the galaxy, is thousands of years older than ours and already has a technology that lets them travel at 1% c.

And it means nothing, because it is still impossible for them to even detect us, not to mention fucking contact us and vice versa.

Why is it even "controversial" to claim that humans and life on Earth in general isn't anything special at all just because no single ayylien has ever called your mom?

>>
>>8477815
because based on projections if even 1 civilization went space age and began colonizing, assuming they got a headstart of just 10,000 years on us, they should be all over the place and we should be detecting radio signals from their vast empire

the fact it's completely quiet out there is spooky, to say the least. it implies we're the only ones because the odds of finding a race at our exact level of technological advancement is miniscule.
>>
>>8477815
Can someone who is smarter than me chime in and answer this: if a civilization on one edge of the galaxy could broadcast a radio signal strong enough that it would reach earth, would we even be able to recognize it as something not natural? or would it be so degraded it would be indistinguishable from the rest of the noise in the universe?

Does the ISS appear to wobble when viewed with the naked eye, and if so, why?

I'm in Melbourne, Australia, and a couple of times recently when I've gone out to watch the ISS flyover, it appeared to have a very visible 'wobble'. Last night in particular, the ISS flew roughly 90 degrees above me, and it had this very pronounced wobble to it. I've had other people in Melbourne tell me they've seen the same thing, though a quick google only showed up one result:

https://www.quora.com/Why-would-the-ISS-appear-to-be-wobbling-when-viewed-with-the-naked-eye

Is this as the answerer there says, a result of temperate fluctations? Last night there also happened to be a plane flying high in the atmosphere as the ISS went past, and the airplane didn't have any visible wobble.

>>
>>8477791
Seeing as how the ISS is much further up than the plane and thus the light from the ISS has to pass through a lot more atmosphere, that's probably the wobble your describing.

The whole reason we put a telescope is orbit was to eliminate artifacts caused by the atmosphere.
>>
>>8477802

Thanks. Is there a reason, though, why the 'wobble' seems significantly more pronounced that the degree to which stars 'twinkle', or am I imagining this?
>>
it is impossible to see the ISS if its going past mach speed over the earth.

So let's suppose that multiple dimensions actually exist and such like that is there technically a dimension that has already planned to destroy all other dimensions and has already begun destroying other dimensions so technically we all are bound to die and are currently bound to death. Just a question though.

What is the point of this thing?

If you observe new evidence related to your hypothesis after you have calculated a probability, why can't you just include the new evidence in your data and calculate a new probability?

I don't know a terrible lot about probability so forgive me if this is obvious.
6 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
it's like this: you have a map in front of you where you want to locate an object, you can guess where the object is with some probability. So you draw a large circle somewhere from your calculations. Then new info comes up and your new map is smaller, so you redo your calculations and get a smaller "more precise" circle. Basically the new info you got helped you in locating your object by shrinking your search area.
>>
>>8477296
It can give you an understanding of how unintuitive probabilities are at times.

e.g.
If a city has 1000 taxicabs, and 100 of these are green, the rest are yellow.
A person is hit by what is reported as a green taxi.

When we check this person in similar light-conditions we find they correctly identify the color as green 90% of the time.

Let's enter these into the equation:
P(B) - probability of correct identification (=0.9)
P(A) - probability of being a green cab. (= 0.1)
P(B|A) - probability of identifying correct given green cab.
P(A|B) - probability of green cab given identified as green.

So; What's the probability the cab that ran over the person was really green ?
>>
>>8477328
Ps. I have here also assumed they were 90% correct for the identification of yellow cabs too.

Which gives us the equation:
P(A|B) = (0.9 * 0.1) /0.9 = 0.1, or 10%

For a twist; let's say yellow cabs are correctly identified 99% of the time, and green cabs are identified correctly 90% of the time.

This changes the equations a bit.
P(B) = identified as green.
P(not B) - identified as not green.
P(A) - Green (0.1)
P(not a) . not green.(0.9)
P(B|A) - identified as green, is green. ( 0.9)
P(B| not A) - identified as green, not green. (0.01)
P(not B | A) - identified as yellow,, is green (0.1)
P(not B | not A) - identified as yellow, is yellow (0.99)

P(A | B) - is green, identified as green (P = ?)

how would you /sci/fags rate this book? should i read it to better understand proofs?
7 posts and 2 images submitted.
>>
>>8477249

Depends? I own it, I would give it 10/10 at the time that I read it.

It is one proof, and it goes over it with extremely excessive commentary and history of mathematics leading up to his proof. At the time I read it I had not taken a discrete mathematics class, and it blew my mind.

If you are an edgy high-schooler or a freshmen undergrad definitely read it, it will inspire you to be more interested in mathematics. It won't help you with reading/constructing proofs in general though.

Anything related to Hofstadter is good.

>>

English, seriously. Most code you are going to see in the wild is going to be written with an English speaking audience in mind. Variable names will typically be in English as well as explanatory comments. Your English seems to be fairly good though, but more fluency will help.

On the computer science side of things I would recommend trying to become very comfortable with one relatively modern programming language like Java, Python, or C if you want to start programming in hard mode.

Also, if your university has a programming club I would recommend joining it from day one. Everyone I know that took programming club even moderately seriously landed $100k+ jobs right out of college.

Good luck!

There's a distinct difference between city/tap and well water. I have well water and when I'm in a city the water literally stings my nose and tastes like I'm drinking from a pool. After living in the city for a while I noticed I became acclimated and could no longer tell the difference between city and well water.
