I got one night of programing ahead of me and I'll need something to blow steam off when I'll have enough.
So Iets try to open athread for anyone who's got general questions on geology, or more specific ones, or just want to discuss it.
I more specialised in intern geophysics, but I'll try to answer anything.
Pic related to vulcanology : it's a trapp

do you know any cabin-monkeys (mud loggers)?
Is this a common job for geologists?
>>8476781
I don't know any personnally, but I'm more into research than industry.
from what I know, mud logging is one of the cheapest and easiest well logging techniques as it require neither the preservation of a core nor to have probes in the drilling arm.
Therefore, it became a very used technique in the industry, so, basically yeah, it's a quite demanded job.

sup, paleofag here

oh, cool! did you ever considered studying actual science?
no, jokes apart I love pal, and would have probably gone with it if it didn't required to learn a whole fuckin bunch of fossiles names and characteristics, which I'm totally unable of. plus I love physics
what level are you at, master, thesis, postdoc?

I'm almost done with my M.S., hopefully going on to doctorate next year.
phys is the one hard science I have trouble wrapping my head around. so needless to say, I just play with mud and seashells instead of thinking about shit like mantle convection and slab pull.

yeah, like all disciplines it needs you to understand its own way of thinking before you can do anything good with it.
any idea for your thesis subject / where you gonna do it? I have to admit I have no idea which country/labs do good pal.
The only thing I know, but it might be cliché is that gov subvention to geology in US are low and going down.

currently doing a trilobite morphometrics project, probably going to do some kind of morpho for doctorate. either that or maybe a paleoecological study. really depends on what's out there.
amerifat here, trying to get the hell out of the more MURICA parts of the country. looking at Mizzou and Michigan at present.
