Knife General Thread, anyone?

I just picked up a Swiss Army Tinker. I haven't had one of these since I was a kid so I was wondering what the steel quality is like on these. Just wondering what I should expect regarding how often I'll need to sharpen and how good of an edge it'll take. I was deciding between it and another Rat-1 to replace the one I lost. I liked the Rat a lot.

hey out, can you folks recommend /out/ related pictures. For example: Slow West, The Revenant, The Hunter. Doesn't necessarily has to revolve solely around outdoor-related themes/survival/etc, just movies with great views of landscapes.

Thinking about pic related to watch next, can you recommend it?

documentarys also welcome

Enjoy a flyover of Wolstenholme Fjord, Greenland near Thule AB. I was aiming for the big iceberg which ended up almost 2 miles out.

Yes, the main compartment is perfect for your MacBook adorned with Bernie and #refugeeswelcome stickers, the webbing attachment is great for hanging your fair trade certified two hand grip chai latte mug. The front pocket is perfectly sized for your earthtone responsibly sourced merino wool and bamboo fiber beanie that you wear mostly hanging off.

I'm looking for a good, cheap, collapsible water container for camping.
Does the bag from Franzia wine work well? Can it be reused?

Normal water containers are kinda pricey, around $12 online, and damn near $30 in stores. And they tear very easily.

The Franzia stuff is double layer, and is very tough. I saw a wook dragging one behind him at a music festival.

The bags are essentially free, but I cant seem to find a easy way to remove the nozzel, and refill them, and not have it leak.

Has anyone successfully repurprised something similar?

nylon hose coupling. like $1 at most hardware places. weve used them for sun showers before. stick the coupling into the valve stem. add your own hose. attach hose to what ever you like. for water use a coupling that has a reducer so you can add a short water hose to it. cut the end off your neighbors garden hose and use it. cut end to coupling. the other end can screw onto any water bib in the park.

What is /out/'s opinion on pop up tents.

They're pretty dope. I'm a professional hunter and we all use them, the old school "muh tent poles and muh sleeves" is a bunch of bullshit. They're very easy, light, compact and it makes for a hell of an easier time. Who cares about a few ounces? Does spending $300 more make it all that much better?

Bulky as fuck
If you are a car or atv camper, giver

Heavy, big. I prefer a tent you set up with trekking poles

Gday /out/

I am going to be doing some park ranger work overseas in the new year, and i'll need an accurate lensatic/prismatic compass.

I would normally go for pic related, the CAMMENGA, and have no issue with the price except for the fact that where i'm working it has a high chance of being stolen.

So what I'm asking is are there any decent knockoff brand lensatic compasses that i could perhaps buy a few of, or should i just shell out for the best and keep it on my person at all times?

well to be honest just because i've never used a mirrored one before.

Easy to use in shitty light conditions?
Any models come to mind that allow you to adjust for true north magnetic north such as higher models?

I always considered them to be shitty cheap versions but i'd be happy to be proven wrong.

Hey /out/

I am fucking tired of society and I would like to go off the grid. I have 0 experience going camping or hiking, but I am pretty sure that I can make it. I have an old jansport backpack and I could gather a few materials before I go on my journey.

Any tips?

Any of you lads ever worked as a park ranger before? How easy was it to get the job?

I'm looking at getting a work visa for Canada for a year, and I'd like to be a park ranger while being there.

not gonna happen. high demand jobs don't hire people who they know will be gone after a year.

*you may be able to get a job as seasonal help at a park (concessions, trail crew...) but no way as a ranger. that's a career and they want lifers with qualifications.

Backpacking food thread

Looking for some recommendations for food you just add water and eat in its own packaging. I've tried mtn house but I'm looking to branch out. Anyone tried dehydrated meals? Found packitgourmet and they have some interesting stuff. Anyone recommend anything?
9 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
Been thinking abut this myself lately too. My list is small and pretty standard and not all is just 'add water and go'; building it up over time. Maybe it'll help.

Instant rice
Instant potatoes
Cured or dried meats
Oatmeal variety pack
Sunflower seeds
Dehydrated fruits
Dehydrated vegetables
Ramen packs
Soup bouillon mixes
Wasabi peas
Pancake mix
Blueberry muffin mix
Jams or jellies
Powered eggs
Powered milk
Tang (powered OJ)
Instant coffe & powered creamer blended mix

Also taking tips on other foods. Not a big fan of trail mix.
