Knife General Thread, anyone?

I just picked up a Swiss Army Tinker. I haven't had one of these since I was a kid so I was wondering what the steel quality is like on these. Just wondering what I should expect regarding how often I'll need to sharpen and how good of an edge it'll take. I was deciding between it and another Rat-1 to replace the one I lost. I liked the Rat a lot.

picked this up recently from trackofthewolf

based on an 18th century french trade knife, 1/16'' thick, 1095 steel. The handle is a bit short compared to my coyote, but it slices great, and at 36 bucks for the knife it's a steal.
>>
>>856872
Well Randall Adventure Training's association with Ontario has dried up, but the knife models they released are technically Ontario property, so Ontario still makes the RAT, it's just not officially named RAT.
>>
>>857204

It is officially named as rat, even right now on their website it says rat (toss in model number here)

Randall took the knife, change it just a tad bit and now Esee sells it.

Which esee version feels better in hand, seems to be able to deploy faster, blade geometry seems to be rounded out better.
>>
>>856833
SAK is stainless steel. it's not great because of that, but it is decent stainless and keeps a decent edge. Not a shaving sharp edge though. When the time comes to sharpen it I recommend using sandpaper actually. Maybe from 250-1000 grits. I can never get them sharp by stone. If you finish by pulling the blade over rough glass it'll be a bit sharper. I used the top of a glass that is rough. Also the top of a car window works well.

Looks like something like that. Relax, they aren't all that bad, those shitty knives make great box openers and you can practice sharpening with them if you aren't very good at it without worrying about damaging a better blade.

pic related: $5 gas station knife that doesn't close all properly because the springs fucked up and there is not divot for the liners ball bearing. It has been repaired many times over the last like 6 years and used for pretty much everything imaginable. Cheap plastic frames on the handle, the spring is busting out of the handle. The spring's lack of tension was sort of fixed by inserting a small nut behind it.

Since it wont stay closed, I no longer carry it, it stays in my kitchen to open things.

Above that is my cqc-8k because I'm too poor to buy an actual CQC-8. Even though it's just the kershaw licensed knock off, it's pretty damn good, my only complaint is that it has a chisel grind, not sure why it bugs me, but it just does.

The one on the far right is another POS $10 beater I usually carry when I know it's getting bad use. Really, I want my crappier knives to break and be mostly beyond fixing so I can justify replacing them with better things, I want a Delica or an Endura but I can't justify to myself spending 60ish when I have a handful of cheap knives I havent even used enough to ruin.

The top 5 horizontal things are typically what I pocket for the day, the voyager pretty much never gets carried unless I go do outdoors things. The surge goes out when I think I might need actual tools, otherwise the fuse or the SAK go with me.

I'm trying to basically
>>
>>857354
>I want a Delica or an Endura but I can't justify to myself spending 60ish when I have a handful of cheap knives I havent even used enough to ruin.

It'll probably be a long time before you ruin them but you'll have to ask yourself whether or not the quality of the knives are low enough to bother you in your daily use.

That being said, I don't think you can beat the RAT-1 or 2 in terms of budget quality. My only complaint about the RAT1 was that the handle was a little slick. It's only 25 bucks in Amazon.
>>
>>857366
Y'know, I've been wanting a RAT because of that value, I've fiddled with my friends RAT2 and I really, really like it. two of the big pulls for me on the spydercos is their colors and their weird shape and look though, I'll probably end up picking up a RAT sometime after a spyderco.

Really, the POS knives I have don't bother me enough to be uncarriable--except the one that won't close-- the half-serration on the 2nd one i had isn't optimal since I never use them but they arent so bad as to make it hard to use in any way.

3 more junkers on the right, I keep the pliers in my bicycles saddle bag. That kobalt serves the specific purpose of being a cheap tool in case it gets stolen off my bike when I leave it chained up. Surprisingly, hasn't happened yet. The half-serrated smith was a $15 knife center "buy a random knife we used to test our engraving machinery and it will be a knife that's at least a bit a more than $15 but it will have a bunch of engravings on it"

The borderguard's clip was shitty and it had to be repaired with computer screws. Also, out of the box, the liner wouldn't go in enough to lock very well so I had to adjust it. I have a feeling S&W is one of those companies that half the time you get a perfect knife and the other half you get lemons. Incidentally, the "glass breaker" on it is exceptionally good at removing ice build up from a -80 celsius freezer.

Got the tiny SAK at Larzzland like 17 years ago after like $10 worth of playing nickel games to win tickets for it.

Has a slight recurve and a useless ricasso where the edge should be.
>>
>>857301

TOPS is kind of the red headed step child of the knife world.

They make good quality stuff (AFAIK they use Rowen manufacturing - the same company that does ESEE), and there was a time the Brothers of Bushcraft Fieldcraft Knife, commonly known as the TOPS B.O.B. was a very popular choice.

Also the Scandi Trekker, and maybe a few others, but when they sell their knives for $180, and you could get an LT Wright Genesis for that price, there's really no contest.

If you look at youtube, many people that used to be very into tops knives, now swear by LTWK, BHK, and other such makers, and for good reason.

If tops knives were in the $120 range, they'd have a hope of competing, but the way things are, not so much.

>Has a slight recurve and a useless ricasso where the edge should be.

no, it doesn't.

Most people assume there should be an edge there, because it's part of the blade, but I can tell you - that's where the HANDLE should be.

Here's a shot of it side by side with an lt wright Coyote. Both have the same length of cutting edge (2 7/8'' on the coyote iirc), but the coyote has that extra bit of handle.

The trade knife is one of two small fixed blades I edc currently (whichever I feel like carrying on a given day) - I find myself putting my index finger over the spanish notch when using that one, but I like the looks of it, and it has great geometry (hardly surprising with a 1/16'' spine).

Oi.
Already posted this pic. in the non spoopy thread but yeah.

Got it One week ago.
Really nice.
One strike goes 1 inch deep into a solid tree trunk.
it has a 20° grind for the first 5 cm. of the blade and goes into a 30° in order to withstand heavy duty tasks.
the 20° digs right into wood, but is simply to short to be as useful as a normal small knife.
It chops like a beast and the handle doesn't have any hotspots, it feels exactly like the Mora bushcraft handle
Steel holds and edge well and is easy to sharpen, do what you want to it, it bends before it breaks. It's made of a really good spring steel (80crV2), which is compareable to 1095 CroVan with a little less edge retention and more flexibility.

I got what I wanted: an ugly beauty; The bastard child of a Leuku and a hatchet kept secure inside a high quality leather sheath and that for 100 bucks shipping included.

>>
>>858908
>Could any oil, like home olive oil do the trick?
I wouldn't. Olive oil doesn't "dry" the way that Linseed oil does. That's why woodworkers don't use olive oil in their work. Oil painting is the same way. Linseed oil will absorb and then dry off so your handle won't be slick.

I'd far rather have a plain edge outdoor #8... but they don't make 'em. It would be interesting to know if anyone has ever swapped a standard 12c27 #8 blade out for the serrated one it comes with?

I agree with the wood handles comment though, it is pain in the arse at times but I've given my one a spray with WD40 at the pivot and it's almost never been a problem since

I would only ever consider the FFG version anyway, I prefer my knives as thin as possible without getting too flexible or having to worry about gross failures.

i want screws because i cant wrap my head around how people are ok with knives they cant take apart to clean. I mean the knife will rust underneath that handle if it gets wet unless they have sealed it with some resin and resin wont last forever.

>i want screws because i cant wrap my head around how people are ok with knives they cant take apart to clean
Because if you just take proper care of your knife, you won't need to disassemble a knife to clean it.
>>
>>860149

LT Wright uses marine grade epoxy - you're not getting any moisture under the handles.

Most higher end makers use epoxy to affix the handles and seal them.

If you have only handled low end kitchen knives and other trash, that gets loose with time, I can see how that would be a problem for you, but all the knives I currently use are peened, and there are zero problems wit them.

I'm getting linseed oil tomorrow for my Opinel after sanding the handle and reprofiling it.

The problem is, the knife is over 10 years old, I was unable to take the blade apart. Should I just dump the whole knife inside the oil, fill a glass and soak just the handle?

Also how long should I let it on the oil? I guess after that I'll just have to let it dry right?

Sorry for all the questions but I really like this knife and I don't want to fuck up.
>>
>>860360

Oil never hurts steel, it wont really matter.

Dont use cooking oil, it will smell like shit once it becomes rancid.

>The problem is, the knife is over 10 years old, I was unable to take the blade apart. Should I just dump the whole knife inside the oil, fill a glass and soak just the handle?
>Also how long should I let it on the oil? I guess after that I'll just have to let it dry right?

Avoid soaking a wood handle in the oil. Even a few extra drops of oil can be too much and lengthen your drying time from 3 days to 3 weeks. Soaking the whole thing might mess up the wood for years.

Just get some tiny wire brushes, Q-tips, etc and carefully work the knife apart, might take a few days. If really necessary you could try VERY small dabs of "PB blaster" penetrating catalyst applied with a fine tipped paint brush and let it sit for an hour, return, repeat. Keep it off the wood.
>>
>>860293
>that's a serious DIY knife let alone 8 of them. do you do metalworking for a living?

Nope this was my first foray into knife kits. I've built some AR-15s from parts kits, that's it. But most of the work actually was with the wood. Cutting the scales to be flush against the bolster AND trying to drill the holes to match up perfectly was pretty nerve wracking. They all matched up pretty well but a couple that came out just the slightest bit off required me to spend about 1 hr each just to get all 3 screws in each scale at once. And then the shaping and fine sanding, about 99% of it had to be with the sandpaper wrapped around a little 1x2" block to maintain the edges I wanted, no plain sandpaper except on the last passes of 1000/1200/1500 grit paper... By the end I was sick of it.

All I did with the metal was lightly file and polish a few of them in certain spots to make the button locks more crisp and less likely to stick. The kit portions came together pretty flawlessly. Expected I guess, given their price.
>>

knifekits.com

DDR3-BL kits.

They have the basic parts liners, bolsters, blade, button lock mechanism, screws, etc. You screw everything together. The steel comes sanded to a 600 grit finish with the blade sharpened so you can "just" make custom scales, attach them and stop there like I did, or do more, like a custom spine, mirror finish, add a safety, spring assist, etc. Pic related is same knife.

They're decent quality imo, tight consistent tolerances. My only criticism is they don't sell a safety for them, so you have to make your own if you want one. Without it, since they're button lock folders they can't be carried in a pocket.

Opinions?

I want to gift it to a friend. It is advertised as a gardening work knife, but I think it would work great for food prep and eating, pretty much the only thing he's going to use it for.
>>
>>860884
it looks fine for the task but the appearance i believe is a bit polarizing in that personally im not a fan of the way it looks so i hope you know if this is the kind of style your friend would appreciate. Also, i wonder what the metal neck part is made of cause if its just chinese mystery steel i can imagine rusting issues especially in food prep tasks.
>>
>>860914
>>860884
The metal neck (the lock) part is not the part to be worried about, mine hasn't rusted. The blade, however, is really prone to rust. I've put mustard on mine, to prevent brown rust. This gives it a nice little patina.

I recommend opinel for edc/small tasks. Sharp knives out of the box. I didn't like the style at first, but it grew on me when I did some customisation.

A ground down Glock Field Knife.

>>

>>
>>861435

Good choice. I heard they are quite robust and well priced, but that you often need to sharpen them yourselves when you get them.
>>
>>861343

Ontario Knife Company Bushcraft line. 5160 with a toughness focused heat treat should even more indestructible than the field knife.
>>
>>858946

Carbon steel is, by it's nature, a lot tougher than stainless. They're also easier to sharpen.

Rust can be a pain in the ass, but it's manageable. A broken or dull knife? That's a lot worse.
>>
>>861377
Eyeballing mine it looks like there might be some of that but measuring it: it might even be an illusion or much less than a mm worth.

>>861451

G&G Hawk grip clip. It's a bit of an odd design, but it does solve the retention/pocket wear tradeoff.

Not really a knife, but I thought it would be better to ask it here than start a new thread.

I have a knife and multitool, but I need a pocket tool that has at least 4 or 5 hex wrench sizes on it. Wrenches are something else I use fairly often. With that I'd have all the tools I need.

My Opinel handle has been soaked in linseed oil for a day, going to keep it there until tomorrow.

How should I proceed then? Anything special or just drying?
>>
>>861889

A rusty, but sharp knife will still cut. A shiny, but dull broken knife will not.

Sea empires rose and fell using carbon steel. They managed.
>>
>>862085
They were also meticulous in their maintenance of iron, steel, wood, line and sheet, used brass wherever possible and affordable and you can be damn sure would have marvelled and treasured stainless steel.
>>
>>861948
This was not a very smart thing to do. The wood will fill up with oil and swell just like with water, and you won't be able to open it.

If want to waterproof it should have used coating of wax or grease that won't capillary and a hairdryer on the hinge end. I suppose oil might be OK on the rest but not on the hinge.
>>
>>862106

My point is that you can take carbon steel to the ocean. It doesn't have to be stainless.
>>
>>862143
You can, but it will still be inferior. You can wear a surplus field jacket in a rainstorm, but an actual rain jacket will always keep you drier
>>
>>861889
>unless yo are in the sea, I would say

ftfy

Carbon steel needs attention REGARDLESS of where you are. I"m 30 mi from the ocean but when it pisses with rain, I'm gonna check my knife and make sure it's not soaking.

Surface rust can be rubbed/sanded off - if you leave a carbon knife a few hours or even a few days, no worries.

The problem comes in with NEGLECT. If you neglect your knife (based on the conditions) and get pitting then good luck. Of course even if it's pitted it's still functional, just ugly.

>>862162
You're a moron.

The only thing it'll be 'inferior' in is it's corrosion resistance. That inferiority is the same irrespective of where you are. Some people just don't prioritise corrosion resistance because they're happy to take care of their tools.

>anon was the kid who left his bike to get rusted in the garden
>now has a complex about stainless knives

soundabootrite?
>>
>>861889 Here.

Although I agree that it's possible and I do agree that's it's about neglect, I still think it's an issue.

Or perhaps I should be specific. I mostly see the issue in folders, where the salty wind will reach places you can only oil/maintain while taking the knife apart.

The problem is probably less pronounced in fixed blade knives where oil can be reapplied with a quick wipe down.

That said, the extra care that carbon (folding) blades require in vicinity to the sea does not weigh up against the benefits, especially when modern steels can strike up a good balance between corrosion resistance and other beneficial factors.

I live in a country near the sea and used to work in a port facility. I do own some carbon blades and I do like them for their advantages. However, if I foresee I won't have enough to maintain them as necessary, I'll leave them at home.

I have a rat 1 and a rat 2
Like them both though I carry the 2 significantly more

The 1 is a little bit heavy for a pocket carry ( for me atleast) at 5 sh ounces

Their aus8 is pretty dang easy to sharpen and takes a wicked edge
But it doesn't hold it for a very long time ( though I do use my knives alot at work opening 20-30 bags +boxes+zipties etc daily

Supposedly Ontario is coming out with a rat 1 with d2 steel for just slightly more

They're cheap knives but great for the price
If I were you I would wait and pick up one of the d2 models provided you can sharpen it when needed and will take care of it as d2 is supposedly prone to rusting
If you dont have a decent sharpening system maybe get the AU's 8 version just because it's super easy to sharpen

But I dedicated probably 2 hours ( on and off ) to reprofiling and sharpening he majority of my knives

Now the question is what one to carry tomorrow

Also trying to keep myself from buying another knife or 4

Use a hatchet. Even one of the new SAKs with a woodsaw is better than batonning.

Tung oil is also good but a pain in the ass to apply (long dry time). There are religious debates between tung and BLO.

Walnut oil is the only oil in your kitchen that will dry. Considered inferior but unquestionably food grade.

Reminds me that i list my No7 in the fucking Alps recently. What a drag. Cooking kit will never be the same.

I have that one in the Hercules variant, basically a multitool, even has pliers.

I like the locking blade.

Wish they made an alox with locking blade.
>>
>>861948
Yes, wipe of the excess and let it dry somewhere for a few days.

Don't mind the other fag, you knaifu will be fine, linseed is the right stuff.

Pic is a Hultafors HVK GH. And my last remaining Opinel, the No9 Carbone.

BTW, the HVK GH and the No9 blade have the same length!

Pocket sharpening stone is a Fällkniven DC3.

Have one and I love it. Bought it at a garage sale for 15 bugger dollars. Wife husband passed away, ended up selling a bunch of his knives, fire arms, camp gear.

Spent probably close to a grand there (had wife go take money out of the bank while I waited there), walked away with problems ten times worth that.
>>
>>867347
Looks nifty. Sheath? Maeker? How long?

If it's good, buy a few and consider the knife problem solved for your lifetime.
>>
>>867676

15,5 cm blade, 5,3 mm thick spine. Teflon covered. I bought one with a leather sheath, they also come in plastic ones. Handle is a rubber/plastic alloy thing so it'll last all four seasons of abuse. The sheath has a rubber wheel lock so it will never drop even if kept upside down (we used to do that in the army). Maker is "J-P Peltonen". Quit simply the best knife I've ever had.
>>
>>865542

Looks like a Buck 119

Full tang in the same way as a KA-BAR military (it's the entire length, but it's not as wide as the blade; it's like medieval swords); strong enough
>>
I live on a farm and cut wood un-ironically unlike a lot of the batoning faggots in this thread.

My swiss army knife is bloody useful. I use it all the time for little things like gates, the truck etc

Put it on a retractable metal chain and clip that on your pocket.

What's your SAK of choice? I've had a SwissChamp for almost 15 years. Served me well and still going strong. It's pretty chunky though. I've been looking at EDC alternatives. Thinking Trekker probably.

I have a Leatherman Rebar now that I've been carrying around.
>>
>>864864
No he didn't. The Buck-strider collab was way more expensive than $ 40. Also, it is of some value to collectors.

I wouldn;t say it was exactly cheap either, it being a second hand knife and him having to clean it up. But it was definitely no rip-off either.

How can I go about cleaning crud and gunk in the locking channels and innards of this knife? Hoppes and a toothbrush?
>>
>>866350
did you grind off the flipper!?
>>
>>868036
One way thats really common practice is to clean the knife with soap water and a toothbrush, use a qtip to remove excess water in the inside of the knife, then oil the parts you want to oil

With a SAK, theres no rust involved unless you go full retard, so I would do that
>>
>>868036
I sit mine in a bowl of hot soapy water, to loosen up the shit and pocket lint, then go to town with a toothbrush.
Dry, sharpen if needs be, then oil.
This reminds me, mine needs doing today!

i'd say no. Something about it rubs me the wrong way. Most notably, the "lion's head" pommel, and the sheath - no frogs. It might just be a farmer type sheath, but it looks low quality, as do the karda and chakmak. Those are rarely very good, and sometimes (tora) not there at all, but it just doesn't look right.

If you want a cheap, but decent, try Windlass (official supplier for the Indian gurkha regiments, and they also supply dress weapons for USMC, among other things).

If you can spend a proper amount, go Himalayan Imports, and if you can wait a couple of months for delivery, Tora Blades.

Making a knife for my dad as a christmas present- this is my first time making anything like this, ever.

Got the shape roughly hacksawed out and now I need to grind it smooth. However, I just learned that the steel I'm using is probably case hardened and not great for knife making.

Will this thing explode when I start heating it up to harden/temper it? Someone told me it won't hold an edge for super long and will need regular sharpening to use effectively but other than that I should be okay. Anyone know for sure?

Seriously, it's a fighting knife. It's tang, the solidness that's in regular knives that extends all the way down through the hilt, is nonexistent in a balisong. It will break after even light use.

Go to your local hardware store and spend $10 on a knife like pic related.

M95 ranger knife
https://www.lamnia.com/en/p/4/knives-and-folding-knives/j-p-peltonen-m95-ranger-knife-leather

M07 ranger knife:
https://www.lamnia.com/en/p/3/knives-and-folding-knives/j-p-peltonen-m07-ranger-knife

Only difference is blade length - M95 has a 150 mm (6") blade and M07 has a 125 mm (5") blade.

A very good, full tang (I think?), general purpose knife that can take batoning and punishment while being easy to sharpen.

Price in Finland is about 80 €.
>>
>>872010

Forgot to mention:

Blade thickness is 5 mm.

Not as good as a thin, small knife for slicing because of 5 mm blade thickness and sharpening angle but still manages those very well.

It's supposed to be a substitute for a small axe or a wedge.. Main reason for thiccness is to be able to process wood.
