Any of you lads ever worked as a park ranger before? How easy was it to get the job?
I'm looking at getting a work visa for Canada for a year, and I'd like to be a park ranger while being there.
not gonna happen. high demand jobs don't hire people who they know will be gone after a year.

*you may be able to get a job as seasonal help at a park (concessions, trail crew...) but no way as a ranger. that's a career and they want lifers with qualifications.

If i build up a resume with concessions and trail crew work over a few years is there a chance i might be able to be a ranger?

dude park ranger is being a cop your jurisdiction is just park lands instead of the town or county or whatever. you need at the bare minimum to go to the police academy.
/ILTFCECNG/ I'd like to take from the Canadian economy and contribute nothing general

Along with volunteering, yeah absolutely. Helps to have some sort of background in Environmental Science or something like forestry but from what I understand it's not entirely necessary. You just have to know your shit or how to present yourself as someone who does.

you do realize that there are non-LE rangers right? Interp Rangers make up the bulk of the rangers in a given park. They provide most of the visitors services and provide shit like guided walks and all that.

He's got a point. Why doesn't he be a park ranger in Canada?
I'm a Hawaiian halfway through a plant biology and tropical agriculture degree, what are my chances of getting a ranger position at volcanoes?

Have you volunteered or interned?

Not with NPS, I have volunteered with oahu army natural resources maintaining restored forest sites and I've done plenty of work on farms.
I'd like to intern with NPS after i finish my associates but I'd have to move to maui (haleakala) or big island (volcanoes), and maybe work on obtaining a bachelor's at Hilo.
Have you worked with NPS? because I'm curious about the cons of the job.

With this kind of work, experience counts just as much of not more than your degree. It's not terribly difficult to gain the experience, but the parks/forest service mainly wants to know that you can do a hard job outdoors rather than you can pass your classes

Park ranger with a large county here, not law enforcement based which is awesome and shit. and free housing. Also awesome as shit.
....but its really fucking competitive. All types of park rangers, all places. Experience and some sort of degree is required. If you are looking for part time seasonal park attendant/ranger work it is a good deal easier to find work but you have to be willing to move around if you want to do it for more than a few months

A background like that you should be able to wiggle in someplace at the bottom. The benefits of working outside or with NPS are obvious. The drawbacks are low pay, lots of work depending on where you end up, very competitive if you want to make it a career, and there is incredible LOW job satisfaction due to management of NPS. The front line co-workers you work with are awesome, but the government making the rules and the management above you are usually balls.
