http://www.swissinfo.ch/eng/online-abuse_trolls-increasingly-use-their-real-names/42327166

>Online bullies who post abusive comments or hate speech – so-called trolls – are increasingly using their own names, a study by the University of Zurich has revealed.

>Anonymity is generally believed to be a major barrier to identifying and tracking down trolls who post abusive online comments.

>However, a research project published on Monday by the University of Zurich has shown that trolls are increasingly using their full names online and that individuals posting hate speech were using their full names more often than anonymous trolls.

>The team studied over 500,000 socio-political comments made on 1,600 online petitions from the German platform www.openpetition.de between 2010 and 2013.

>Many online news and social media platforms are trying to prevent the use of hateful language in comments and posts, and there have been calls to encourage online debate by ending online anonymity.

>The University of Zurich researchers believe many online trolls don’t bother to remain anonymous as it boosts their credibility and popularity.

>They say many trolls justify their online protests as a moral duty and assume they will rarely be held accountable for their online comments. Trolls appear to mobilise other people in their social networks more easily if they use a real name, the researchers said in a statement.

>“Removing anonymity therefore will not automatically lead to a disappearance of online firestorms. In fact, it might even lead to an increase,” said sociology PhD student Lea Stahel.

Why is the world troll so abused nowadays?

A troll is someone whose goal is to get a rise out of people, make them angry, or otherwise cause trouble for their own amusement. If "hate speech" is employed, it's only because it's effective to that end. Someone interested in trolling /pol/ for example, would not find much success with that tactic.

Someone who earnestly believes controversial or offensive things and argues for them is not a fucking troll, no matter how much they hurt your feelings.

they changed the definition of "troll', this being a German platform it most likely covers anyone who shows dissidence to the current system.

http://www.theverge.com/2016/6/21/11983954/twitter-engage-influencer-app

>As an influential celebrity on the go, you've heard about Twitter, and your handlers are always telling you about what it can do for your brand. But what are you supposed to tweet about?

>And what happens if a normal tweets at you?

>Enter Engage, a new standalone app for influential Twitter users that takes some of the guesswork out of Twitter.

>The app, which is available today on iOS, is designed to help famous people interact with their fans and build a bigger following. The app includes three main tabs. Engage highlights the most important interactions you've had on Twitter, and includes mentions from users who are verified, followed by a lot of your followers, or interact with you a lot. An "understand" tab shows you high-level analytics for your posts, showing you how many impressions you're getting over time. And the "posts" tab shows you detailed performance numbers for individual posts.

>One thing Engage doesn't have: a timeline. Engage is for the celebrity who sees the value in tweeting, but would rather not pay attention to the broader conversation in the global town square. If reading Twitter makes you upset, but you still want to be able to broadcast the details of your latest juice cleanse, Engage may be the app for you.

>Engage seems to be modeled on Facebook Mentions, a two-year-old app that helps celebrities find posts that are talking about them. It differs from Engage in two significant ways. Mentions requires a verified Facebook account to use, whereas Engage will be available to all Twitter users. And while Facebook's version looks more or less like the flagship app with a special section added for monitoring mentions of your name, Engage is much more focused on analytics.

> ALBANY — Sales taxes on tampons and other feminine hygiene products will disappear Sept. 1 under legislation signed Thursday by Gov. Cuomo.

>"This is a regressive tax on essential products that women have had to pay for far too long and lifting it is a matter of social and economic justice," Cuomo said after signing the bill that makes New York the 11th state to take such action.

>The legislation, sponsored by Assemblywoman Linda Rosenthal (D-Manhattan) and Sen. Sue Serino (R-Dutchess County), was approved by the Senate and Assembly in May.

>Among other bills signed by Cuomo was legislation allowing young hunters to wear fluorescent pink instead of orange; and a measure allowing funeral homes to serve food and non-alcoholic beverages to mourners.

>NEW YORK (AP) — Gawker founder Nick Denton filed for personal bankruptcy Monday in the aftermath of a Florida jury's awarding $140 million to Hulk Hogan in a privacy case revolving around a sex tape posted on Gawker.com.

>As a result of the verdict, which is being appealed, Gawker's parent company has gone into bankruptcy and is up for sale.

>Denton's bankruptcy filing Monday says he owes $125 million to Hogan, a former professional wrestler. Filing for bankruptcy helps him keep Hogan from collecting.

Gawker's already dead from the ruling -- the sale was essentially a formality.

But this is a little fucked up, since first of all the valuation was based on the stock price *before* Hogan's judgement, and second, at 30% share this guy should not be subject to personal asset seizure.

If it were a Wall Street company that fucked over thousands of peoples' pensions then I'd have no sympathy. But this is seriously just a single mistake in an ever-more-rules-lax internet-tabloid environment. The judge and Hogan are making an example of Gawker that the tabloids can only go so far, and that's fair (though I don't think destroying the company is necessarily fair nor conducive to the goal of setting an example). But now that a single exec with plurality share is paying out of pocket, this is just getting ridiculous.

I guess, barring appeal, civil courts have more power than criminal courts when it comes to prosecuting corporations. Maybe that's where the Wall Street banks should be sued?

"Hillary Clinton touts her tenure as secretary of state as a time of hardheaded realism and “commercial diplomacy” that advanced American national and commercial interests. But her handling of a major technology transfer initiative at the heart of Washington’s effort to “reset” relations with Russia raises serious questions about her record. Far from enhancing American national interests, Mrs. Clinton’s efforts in this area may have substantially undermined U.S. national security."

I forgot which paper said it, but they said something like, "These candidates are terrible. No one else has the ability to lose to either of them."

I don't understand why the dems leaders said, "Man she has such a long history in politics. Everyone is going to be so impressed with her experience." When the reality is, "Man, this lady has a long ass history and there are going to lots of skeletons in her closet and stories that can be framed as terrible even if they aren't."

I remember reading about this place when Medvedev was trying to garner support, but it fell off the radar quickly, because it was a failure and "New Moscow" is nothing more than fancy but empty corporate buildings. (Who would have guessed the corruption and authoritarian bureaucracy of the Russian system would scare business off?)

It will be interesting how this turns out. It looks really bad for her, especially with the recent anti-russia remarks. However, considering Putin seemed dismissive of the whole thing during Medvedev's presidency and blocked him from integrating from the west, Clinton is probably going to say, "look, this wasn't putin we were dealing with. We were trying to bring Russia out of the cold war mentality, but it didn't work. So we stopped supporting this and we've stood up to him with sanctions (the same way Bush stood up to him). Not to mention, a lot of Medvedev's the moderate guys we worked with were shit canned by putin as this venture was falling apart."

Either way, what a disaster. She looks like shit.

http://www.dailydot.com/layer8/wikileaks-echoes-tweet-anti-semitism/

>If any one form of discriminatory social media expression has been on the rise in recent months, it’s been anti-Semitism.

>The Donald Trump presidential campaign’s well-documented white nationalist and Neo-Nazi following continues to bring such hatred to the forefront. Trump himself had even retweeted things from members of the “white genocide” movement, and in June, the campaign tweeted out an anti-Semitic meme that originated from the alt-right fever swamps of social media.

>On Saturday, a completely different organization seemed to dip its toes in those waters, too. Wikileaks started tweeting about (((echoes))), and it’s generated a great amount of controversy.

>It’s one of the increasingly well-known methods of harassment used by anti-Jewish racists on Twitter, which has exploded into wider visibility in recent months―tweeting at Jews, and bracketing their names with two or three parentheses on either side.

>It’s intended both as a signal to other anti-Semites and neo-Nazis, to highlight the target’s Jewish heritage (or perceived Jewish heritage, since racists aren’t always the sharpest or most concerned with accuracy), and track them on social media, making it even easier for other anti-Semites to join in on the abuse. After the phenomenon became more widely discussed in the media, many Jews and non-Jews alike began self-applying the parentheses on Twitter names, in a show of anti-racist solidarity.

>That’s where Wikileaks comes in. On Saturday, amid the group’s high-profile dump of thousands and thousands of emails from the Democratic National Committee, its Twitter account said something very suggestive about its critics. The tweet has since been deleted, going against Wikileaks' perceived notion of radical transparency. Nevertheless, screenshotters never forget.
...
35 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
>It’s not exactly the most coherent tweet, but the thrust is nonetheless pretty clear: Wikileaks accused most of its critics of having the (((echoes))) brackets around their names, as well as “black-rimmed glasses,” statements that many interpreted, plainly enough, as “most of our critics are Jews.”

>The Wikileaks account subsequently tweeted some explanations of what the offending tweet meant, suggesting that “neo-liberal castle creepers” had appropriated the racist-turned-anti-racist solidarity gesture, turning it into “a tribalist designator for establishment climbers.” A clarifying tweet also misspelled “gesture” as “jesture,” which further stoked accusations of witting anti-Semitism.

>Wikileaks ultimately defended the decision to delete the tweets, saying they’d been intentionally misconstrued by “pro-Clinton hacks and neo-Nazis.” It’s also been maintaining a pretty aggressive public relations posture regarding these latest leaks. It threatened MSNBC host Joy Reid for tweeting that she planned to discuss an “affinity” between the group and the Russian government on her show, saying “our lawyers will monitor your program.”

>So, again, not the best tone for a group dedicated to prying open closed organizations, regardless of their desires. It also responded to an article by Talking Points Memo’s Josh Marshall, investigating alleged ties between the Trump campaign and Vladimir Putin, accusing him of “weird priority” for focusing on the method of the correspondences' release rather than the data dump itself.

>Wikileaks has also accused Twitter as well as Facebook of censoring information about the DNC emails, highlighting DNC email-related posts that were flagged as “unsafe.” Facebook CSO Alex Stamos subsequently stated on Twitter that the problem had been “fixed,” however, and there’s no shortage of Facebook links out there directing people straight to the leaked materials.
...
>>
>Twitter similarly denied the allegations in a tweet from its public relations account.

>The Wikileaks brouhaha wasn’t the only instance this weekend of a controversial, perceived piece of anti-Semitism on Twitter getting immediately rolled back and explained away.

>The Trump campaign landed in yet another such situation on Sunday morning, when General Mike Flynn―once considered by Trump for his vice presidential selection―retweeted someone who accused “Jews” of misleading people about the origins of the DNC email leak. Flynn has since apologized, saying he only meant to retweet a link to an embedded CNN article about the leak.

https://mic.com/articles/148855/4chan-trolls-started-that-petition-to-label-black-lives-matter-as-a-terrorist-organization

>An online We the People petition to "formally recognize Black Lives Matter as a terrorist organization" had over 140,000 signatures Friday morning — well over the requirement for a response from the White House.

>It looks like the work of earnest, far-right-leaning Republicans, but the petition's success was actually due to anonymous trolls on 4chan, a controversial image board and internet culture hub. As a whole, 4chan's politics tend to align with the Donald Trump-loving alternative right, but its modus operandi is mischief — mostly, picking on politically correct liberals.

>"Terrorism is defined as 'the use of violence and intimidation in pursuit of political aims,'" the petition's author states, cribbing the definition from the Oxford Dictionaries. According to the petition, is the same definition used to declare the Islamic State group, commonly known as ISIS, and other groups as terrorist organizations.

>According to the petition's authors, Black Lives Matter has "earned" the terrorist label because of its actions in Ferguson, Baltimore, a Bernie Sanders rally, and "all over the United States and Canada."

>"It is time for the Pentagon to be consistent in its actions — and just as they rightfully declared ISIS a terror group, they must declare Black Lives Matter a terror group — on the grounds of principle, integrity, morality and safety," the petition reads.

>4chan screenshots reveal the petition circulated on the politics board /pol/.

>It shouldn't come as a big surprise that the petition spread on 4chan. The site's anonymous users love a petition-based prank. It's why, in 2012, Mountain Dew's "Dub the Dew" campaign ended up with new flavor names like "Fapple" and "Moist Nugget."

>Pranks on 4chan often combine anarchic mischief with right-wing politics and prejudicial viewpoints. It's also responsible for the ballot-stuffing of a petition to have another EU referendum, resulting in 77,000 fraudulent votes. Last year, 4chan's "random" image board /b/ started a petition to have Caitlyn Jenner stripped of her Olympic gold medals.

>The Zimbabwe National Liberation War Veterans Assn. has been a pillar of support for the 92-year-old leader for decades, but it released a statement criticizing the man it had long been quick to defend. The veterans are known for unleashing violence on those opposing the government.

>The surprise revolt by Mugabe's aging corps of loyalists comes after nationwide anti-government protests organized via social media. Many in Zimbabwe are frustrated by a rapidly deteriorating economy, a currency crisis and alleged corruption.

>“We note, with concern, shock and dismay, the systematic entrenchment of dictatorial tendencies, personified by the president and his cohorts, which have slowly devoured the values of the liberation struggle,” the statement said after dozens of veterans' representatives from around the country met Thursday, changing anti-government slogans. Deputies say a Fair Grove woman walked into her barn last month and found a man trying to have sex with her cow.

Darrell Helton, 68, of Nixa, was charged last week with unlawful sex with an animal after he was allegedly caught in the act.

According to a probable cause statement, a woman noticed an unknown car parked near her barn on the evening of June 10, so she went inside the barn to investigate.

As the woman entered, she saw a naked man — identified as Helton — standing behind one of her cows apparently having sex with the animal, according to the statement.

Helton allegedly told deputies with the Greene County Sheriff's Office that he went to the property in Fair Grove, caught a cow, tied it to the corral and tried to have sex with the animal.

The statement says Helton told authorities that was the second time he had engaged in sexual acts with a cow on that property.

Unlawful sex with an animal is a Class A Misdemeanor punishable by up to one year behind bars.

It does not appear Helton was jailed. Helton does not have an attorney listed for this case. The News-Leader was unable to reach Helton for comment using phone numbers listed for him in online records.

>Will merge AOL and Yahoo's American internet properties

http://www.wsj.com/articles/verizon-nears-deal-for-yahoos-internet-businesses-1469196219

>Verizon Communications Inc. is close to paying around $5 billion to buy Yahoo Inc. ’s core business, people familiar with the matter said, absorbing a company that helped usher in the internet age but surrendered most of the profits to later entrants like Google and Facebook Inc.

>Verizon, long considered the most likely buyer since Yahoo put its search engine and web properties on the market, could reach a deal to buy the company in the coming days, the people said.

>Other bidders that had joined the auction of Yahoo could re-emerge, and an agreement with Verizon isn’t guaranteed, two of the people cautioned.

>“In order to maintain the integrity of the process, we won’t be commenting until an agreement is finalized,” a Yahoo spokeswoman said.

>Verizon, with a market cap of about $228 billion, has the means to purchase Yahoo’s Web assets and a logical blueprint for folding them into its fledgling digital media business, which includes AOL properties it acquired last year for $4.4 billion. Verizon, a company having trouble keeping their top-tier image out of the mud, is buying a forgotten website that literally no one uses for 5 billion.

They are obtaining a worthless name, 5 dusty Dell servers from around 2003, a 2000 square foot office in downtown Detroit (the bad part), a water cooler and Hosé, the snappy but reliable maintenance guy who has 5 kids in a single room apartment.

What are they expecting to get from Yahoo? They don't have anything to offer internet users nowadays besides free email, and their apps suck, attachment size limits suck, and ads suck.
