I'm not totally sure if this should go here, so sorry if it's off-topic, but since it's a news board, I thought people might like to discuss where they get their news.

I'm trying to find a good, relatively large, news source that tones down the bias from both sites. I don't want liberal trash like salon, CNN, MSN, etc, but I also don't want conservative trash like Breitbart, Fox, etc. I also don't want something so small and irrelevant that they don't matter.

It seems having all 3 of those things together are mutually exclusive. Can anyone contradict that?

I included a link to something about this as per board rules, to show the kind of PC lib trash I DON'T want. I couldn't find a conservative version within 48 hours, but they are doubtless there.

I have paid subscriptions to the NYtimes, the New Yorker, and Foreign Affairs. I watch PBS for nightly news. My phone aggregates stories and videos from the Smithsonian, The Daily Beast, WSJ, Reuters, and VoA. I also read a lot of leather bound books.

Anonymous have taken down five Icelandic government websites in a protest against whale-hunting by the North Atlantic nation.

The sites, which included the prime minister's official website and that of the environment and interior ministries, went offline on Friday and remained down until about midday on Saturday.

Iceland is a member of the International Whaling Commission (IWC), an inter-governmental body which imposed a ban on all commercial whaling from 1986. The moratorium remains in place, but both Iceland and Norway continue to hunt whales.

Iceland has relied on fishing and whaling as a key part of its economy. Icelanders argue whales reduce the stocks of the fish they hunt for.

Since its devastating financial meltdown in 2008 and a sharp currency devaluation, however, tourism has boomed and whale tours are increasingly popular.

What's the problem with whaling? I mean, at its base, these Icelanders aren't hurting anyone with this, and in fact preserving their environment through checking the whale population, as well as feeding their own people.

To bring out my true feelings here, it just seems like more outrage culture, the thought that we must have something to be enraged at. And here it's whales. Why though? Because whales are nice, majestic creatures! You never see any 'save the alligators' rallies...

The real problem is bees.
They're dying out any it's going to kill a major part of the eco-system. Nobody cares, because "fuck bees".

Do people think it will escalate or is it just going to be angry old men arguing for the next few months?
Also will the Russian sanctions actually harm Russia even further by increasing food price inflation?

Russia has too much to lose by committing to open war with Turkey.

Istanbul controls Russia's immediate sea access to the Mediterranean.

Moscow will use the incident to expand the nationalist and patriotic fervor amongst its people. Perhaps even start choking off Turkey's natural gas supply to pressure them.

I don't think this event will lead to WW3.

>A Florida gun shop owner who was sued by the Council on American-Islamic Relations for declaring his store a “Muslim Free Zone” has been vindicated by a federal court.

>Andrew Hallinan, owner of Florida Gun Supply in Inverness, was sued by CAIR’s Florida chapter after he made the declaration in a YouTube video in July.

>On Tuesday U.S. District Court Judge Beth Bloom said Hallinan, who teamed up with George Zimmerman to raise funds for his legal defense, was within his First Amendment rights to make the statement, according to the American Freedom Law Center who represented Hallinan in the case.

“The general desire of [CAIR] in this case to have Muslims able to access [Florida Gun Supply’s] shooting range someday in the future is insufficient . . . There are simply no facts grounding the assertion that [CAIR] and/or one of its constituents will be harmed—[CAIR] has failed to allege when and in what manner the alleged injuries are going to occur,” the court ruled.

>In the statement released Tuesday by AFLC it declared “Florida Gun Supply will not serve “[a]nyone who is either directly or indirectly associated with terrorism in any way.”

Let's say CAIR won. Why would any Muslim or anyone who's against that particular form of discrimination buy from him?

And how can he determine who's Muslim and who's not?

This doesn't effect his business negatively because neither the ass-sore Islamists nor their liberal defenders would have ever done business with him anyway.

This free publicity does help him with his existing clients because it shows political solidarity with their beliefs.

Getting a ruling like this on the books is great because it sets a precedent. This could go to the Supreme Court though.

http://www.ndtv.com/world-news/south-korea-trains-student-hackers-to-fight-kims-cyber-unit-1248594

>In a darkened "war room," dozens of South Korea's brightest college students are practicing hacking one another as part of a government program to train them to battle some of the world's best -- the shadowy techno-soldiers of Kim Jong Un's regime.

>To build its defenses, President Park Geun Hye's government has enlisted 120 of the country's most talented young programmers, offering full scholarships in return for seven years of military service. While the hackers of the Kim regime may be best known for their link to last year's attack on Sony Pictures Entertainment, their primary target remains South Korea, with the two countries technically still at war more than 60 years after the conflict that sealed their division.

>The urgency to train "white," or ethical, hackers is rising as industrialized nations try to safeguard digital information vital to national security and infrastructure, while combating cyber crime that is estimated to cost over $400 billion a year globally. South Korea's experience fending off the North has made the country a global player in cyber defense. Mitigating future damage still remains a challenge for Seoul's military hackers as the North's attacks become more sophisticated.

Is the "U-turn" on austerity a win for the Conservatives or a triumph for Corbyn?
More importantly, will the British public benefit in both the short and long term from these reviews?

No one wins. Conservatives basically fiddled with the numbers to magic up an extra £20bn from the back of the sofa and labour would rather we keep ourselves full of debt that we will never pay off.
While the public gets scraps off the table while things like the NHS basically buckles under their own weight because they can't manage finances right.

Because nobody gives a crap about Africa, and we expect it to be a violent shithole, so no one is surprised when it turns out to actually be a violent shithole.
