>ANKARA, Turkey — Turkey has summoned officials from Austria and Sweden to protest against news reports and Twitter comments in the two countries relating to a Turkish Constitutional Court ruling on child abuse.

>Turkey protested to Austria over a news ticker at Vienna's airport that claimed Turkey allows sex with children under age 15. Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu also accused his Swedish counterpart of spreading "lies" after she called on Ankara to protect children's rights through her Twitter account.

>Cavusoglu said the reports that appeared in Austria and Swedish Foreign Minister Margot Wallstrom's tweet were a reflection of the "racism, anti-Islamic and anti-Turkish (trend) in Europe."

>Turkey's Constitutional Court last month scrapped an article in the penal code that defined all sexual acts against children as abuse, triggering concern among children's rights advocates that the move will lead to an increase in child sexual abuse cases.

>The court justices voted 7-6 to uphold a local court which argued that all cases should be reviewed individually and that someone who abuses a 4-year-old should not receive the same punishment as someone who has consensual sex with a 15-year-old. The previous law remains in force for six months, giving Parliament time to enact a new law, while children's rights advocates will seek to have the judgment reversed at the European Court of Human Rights.

>Wallstrom tweeted on Sunday: "Turkish decision to allow sex with children under 15 must be reversed. Children need more protection, not less, against violence, sex abuse."

>A Foreign Ministry official said the Austrian charge d'affaires was called to the ministry on Saturday for an official complaint about the "distorted" headline which appeared on a screen at the airport the same day. The Swedish charge d'affaires was summoned on Monday over the minister's tweet, said the official, who spoke on condition of anonymity in line with government rules. Cavusoglu said he would hold a telephone conversation with Wallstrom later on Monday to complain about the "slander and lie."

>A ministry statement said Turkey was "attached to its international obligations" regarding children's rights and was "conscious of its responsibilities." Cavusoglu said the Justice Ministry was working on new legislation that would address the issue of proportionality and insisted there was no legal void that would allow child abuse.

>A senior official, who also spoke on condition of anonymity, said anyone abusing a child "right now" will receive between eight and 15 years in prison. A new law would "make sure that children of all ages will continue to be protected against sexual predators."

>The ministry official said the report was removed from the screen at the Vienna airport following the Turkish ambassador's intervention.

>Turkey also demanded the removal of another news ticker at the same airport a few weeks ago that said visiting Turkey would amount to supporting President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, the ministry said.

>Ties between Turkey and Austria have been tense for several weeks, with a top Austrian official saying Turkey was heading toward a dictatorship and other leaders calling for an end to Turkey's European Union membership talks. Turkey, in turn, has described Austria as the "capital of radical racism."

>European nations have voiced concern over Turkey's massive crackdown on alleged supporters of a religious movement led by U.S.-based cleric Fethullah Gulen, whom Ankara claims orchestrated last month's violent coup attempt that killed at least 270 people. Turkey has accused European allies of not providing the elected government sufficient support in the face of the attempted coup or its bid to move against the coup plotters.

>ROUEN, France — In a gesture of solidarity after the gruesome killing of a French priest, hundreds of Muslims on Sunday attended Catholic Masses in churches and cathedrals across France and Italy.
>More than 100 Muslims gathered at the towering Gothic cathedral in Rouen, near Saint-Etienne-du-Rouvray, where the 85-year-old Rev. Jacques Hamel had his throat slit by two teenage Muslim fanatics Tuesday.
>‘‘We are very moved by the presence of our Muslim friends and I believe it is a courageous act that they did by coming to us,’’ Dominique Lebrun, the archbishop of Rouen, said after the service.
>Some of the Muslims sat in the front row, across from the altar. Among the parishioners was one of the nuns who was briefly taken hostage at Hamel’s church when he was killed. She joined her fellow Catholics in turning to shake hands or embrace the Muslim churchgoers after the service.

*But keep in mind:

>Many of the Muslims who attended the service in Rouen — including those with the banner ‘‘Love for all. Hate for none.’’ — were Ahmadiyya Muslims, a minority sect that differs from mainstream Islam in that it doesn’t regard Mohammed as the final prophet.

So all of them would be killed if sent back to the middle east.

First off, in general fuck this guy, he has completely glossed over the fact that wikileaks uncovered pretty much every major news network in the USA has ties to Clinton.

A free and independent journalist branch along with the right to keep and bear arms are the 2 most important things in existence for protecting the people from a tyrant.

But how do we make sure the press is free and not controlled by the state, a special interest, or a rich individual who then prevent certain stories from getting out there or purposely manipulate the news for their own purpose?

You surely cannot say the USA or UK have free or independent press, not after gamergate and the clinton email hacks. Is it even possible to stop government corruption with journalism like it used to or are those days behind us? Do the writers and editors themselves even want to?

Is Wikileaks the last and only actual journalist alive ?

They don't have to write 20,000. If they write 10 with the right keywords, or omit 10, they can reframe an entire discussion and the character of everyone in it.

Not saying they did, but it's definitely possible to manipulate the discussion as Wikileaks.

http://www.cnn.com/2016/08/07/asia/duterte-war-on-drugs-officials-named/

>The President of the Philippines has named over 150 government officials who he says are complicit in the country's drug trade.

>Among those named in a speech early Sunday in the southern city of Davao -- once President Rodrigo Duterte's mayoral stomping ground -- were government officials, members of the judiciary, congressmen and police officials.

>While some are retired, many on his list were active officers, according to CNN affiliate CNN Philippines.

http://www.nytimes.com/2016/08/08/world/asia/duterte-philippine-president-links-150-public-servants-to-drugs.html

>MANILA — The Philippines’ new president, Rodrigo Duterte, on Sunday publicly accused scores of judges, mayors, lawmakers, military personnel and police officers of involvement with the illegal drug trade, giving them 24 hours to surrender for investigation or, he said, be “hunted” down.

>Mr. Duterte rejected calls last week from international human rights groups to observe due process in the war he has declared on both sellers and users of illicit drugs, after a photograph of a drug user shot and killed by vigilantes made it to the front pages and became a symbol for the bloody antidrug campaign.

>“I ordered the listing, I ordered the validation,’’ he said Sunday in a nationally televised speech at a naval base, referring to the roughly 150 people he mentioned by name. “I’m the one reading it, and I am the sole person responsible for these all.

Damn! I don't know the situation in Philippines, but these types of moves are only pulled by strong, totalitarian governments. If power is not consolidated you get revolts, even civil war.

How did Duterte's platform get so strong? The drug trafficking triads he's fighting aren't pushovers either.

http://thenextweb.com/gadgets/2016/08/08/thermostats-can-now-get-infected-with-ransomware-because-2016/

>If you’ve encountered ransomware before, you’re familiar with how incredibly destructive it can be. It literally holds your computer and files hostage unless you cough up a steep ransom, usually paid in Bitcoin.

>Now, it looks like ransomware is about to make the leap from computers and smartphones to Internet of Things devices.

>Andrew Tierney and Ken Munro – two UK-based researchers for IT security firm Pen Test Partners – demonstrated the world’s first ransomware for a smart thermostat earlier this week at the DefCon security conference in Las Vegas.

>The Wi-Fi enabled thermostat that the researchers targeted is basically a Linux computer. It allows the user to upload wallpapers and configuration settings through an SD card; that’s what they use as a vehicle to install a malicious program onto the device. At this point, an attacker would have full control over the thermostat.
...

>>
>It’s worth noting that for a device to be infected, an attacker would need physical access, or the owner would have to be tricked into infecting their own thermostat.

>So far, the name and manufacturer of the device affected hasn’t been publicly announced. That’s because the researchers only identified the vulnerability two days before the conference was scheduled to start, and have not been able to contact the manufacturer in order to arrange a fix.

>Thankfully, Tierney and Munro both believe that it will be an easy problem to patch.

>This episode illustrates the troubling fragility of Internet of Things devices.

>There are far too many of them that have shipped with vulnerabilities that leave their users at risk, from Wi-Fi enabled kettles that leak network passwords, to “smart fridges” that broadcast the user’s Gmail credentials in plaintext.

>As the number of IoT manufacturers and users proliferate, and as the devices become mainstream household appliances, it seems probable we’ll see even more high-profile security issues.

>RIVER STATE, Nigeria – The head of an international criminal network behind thousands of online frauds has been arrested in a joint operation by INTERPOL and the Nigerian Economic and Financial Crime Commission (EFCC).

>The 40-year-old Nigerian national, known as ‘Mike’, is believed to be behind scams totalling more than USD 60 million involving hundreds of victims worldwide. In one case a target was conned into paying out USD 15.4 million.

>The network compromised email accounts of small to medium businesses around the world including in Australia, Canada, India, Malaysia, Romania, South Africa, Thailand and the US, with the financial victims mainly other companies dealing with these compromised accounts.

>Heading a network of at least 40 individuals across Nigeria, Malaysia and South Africa which both provided malware and carried out the frauds, the alleged mastermind also had money laundering contacts in China, Europe and the US who provided bank account details for the illicit cash flow.

>Following his arrest in Port Harcourt in southern Nigeria, a forensic examination of devices seized by the EFCC showed he had been involved in a range of criminal activities including business e-mail compromise (BEC) and romance scams.

>A judge on Friday overturned the conviction of a Wisconsin man found guilty of helping his uncle kill a woman in a case profiled in the Netflix series "Making a Murderer," ruling that investigators coerced a confession using deceptive tactics.

>U.S. Magistrate William Duffin in Milwaukee ordered Brendan Dassey freed within 90 days unless prosecutors decide to retry him. The state Department of Justice, which handled the case, declined to comment Friday. The state could also appeal Duffin's ruling.

>Dassey's case burst into the public's consciousness with the popularity of the "Making a Murderer" series that debuted in December. The filmmakers cast doubt on the legal process used to convict Dassey and his uncle Steven Avery in the death of Teresa Halbach, and their work sparked national interest and conjecture. Authorities involved in the case have called the 10-hour series biased, while the filmmakers have stood by their work.

>Dassey confessed to helping Avery carry out the rape and killing of Halbach, but his attorneys argued that his constitutional rights were violated throughout the investigation. Dassey didn't testify at his uncle's trial and his confession wasn't presented as evidence there. Both men are serving life sentences.

>Duffin said in his ruling that investigators made false promises to Dassey by assuring him "he had nothing to worry about."

>"These repeated false promises, when considered in conjunction with all relevant factors, most especially Dassey's age, intellectual deficits, and the absence of a supportive adult, rendered Dassey's confession involuntary under the Fifth and Fourteenth Amendments (of the U.S. Constitution)," Duffin wrote.

After finding a young boy all alone trying to sell his teddy bear for food, Franklin police charged the child’s parents with child endangerment.

Officer Steve Dunham found the child in a busy area and went beyond the requirements of his badge to help.

Officials said they received a call on Sunday afternoon that a young boy was wandering in downtown Franklin alone.

Police said the 7-year-old was peddling his toy in front of a drug store to get money for food.

“It broke my heart,” Dunham said. “He told me he was trying to sell his stuffed animal to get money for food because he hadn't eaten in several days.”

Dunham took the child to a nearby Subway to get something to eat, then brought him back to the Franklin Police Department.

“(We) said a little prayer and ate dinner together,” Dunham said.

Police Chief Russ Whitman said Dunham gave the boy comfort and safety that he didn't have at home.

After further investigation, police said the child and his four brothers lived in squalor. Investigators described the home on Main Street as full of garbage, cat urine and liquor bottles.

Investigators charged the parents, Tammy and Michael Bethel, with 10 counts of child endangering.

“(Police) treated them like their own kids, and that's exactly what law enforcement does in situations like this. How would we want someone to treat our kids?” Whitman said. “Hopefully, these officers’ actions change these kids’ lives and maybe change the lives of the parents to become better parents.”

Dunham said he doesn't look at it as anything but just doing his job, and he made a new friend in the process.

“I came back to check on him and he was hiding. He jumped out to scare me when I came back in the building; he got me real good,” Dunham said. “(We) would like to go home at the end of the day feeling like (we’ve) done something positive and, you know, had some kind of positive impact."

The victim’s advocate sent the Franklin Police Department a thank-you note, commending them for going the extra mile to give a vulnerable child some comfort and safety.

Police said the 7-year-old boy and his brothers, ages 11, 12, 15 and 17, have been removed from the home and are now staying with family members.

The parents have been ordered to have no contact with them.

Well those kids are fucked for life. Hopefully their guardians will not foster a victim complex in them, but that maybe wishful thinking as they may not know that pity is harmful.

I've know more than my far share of situations similar to this one. My father owns property in shitville that is just south of us, and his tenants are similar to these people. They rarely pay, they are manipulative and dirty and, worst yet, he's been trying to 'gift' these liabilities to me my entire life. The children, I've witness grow up, turned out worse for the wear only to continue bad decisions as they don't have access to decent information or parenting.

Typical Russian BS.
Create an incident then invade a country and take their land.
Meanwhile, Russian live in their own delusion that they are the victim.
"Oh no, we didn't engage in state-sponsored doping athletes."
"But independent evidence exists...."
"No no, that is the world showing agression against poor, innocent Russia"
>>
1. Almost every country uses drugs to enhance his athletes. The best one in that is the US, the second one is Russia. Its a joke, that the world put on a show for Russia. Its pure politics. They could have gotten red handed the Germans, British, French etc. In Europe there are show trials for Russians, which is absolutely true. I'm not a fan of Russia, but this is ridiculous. Not a single US soldier is in the news. Not a single US diplomat makes mistakes. Not a single US citizen is a killer, rapist, thief, scoundrel in foreign countries. Eight out of ten times they are Russian. Is it true? Hell no. The only difference is, that the US ones can't really be reported, because the US is an ally in the NATO.
2. The invasion of Crimea was only partially illegal. Ukraine is saying it belongs to them. I think it belongs to the Crimean Tartars, but nobody is asking them. The Ukrainian news are waging a propaganda war and the NATO backs it. The problem with the people is, that they usually see only one side. "Russia is aggressive, Russia is bad bohoo". Just think about the strategic situation. After the fall of the Soviet Union the US agreed to not enlarge the NATO (it didn't really have an enemy that time.) This was not the case. First they assimilated almost all the former Warsaw Pact allies, than they started to add countries one by one. In the late '90s Russia started to grow again in power, which THEY started to see aggression. On of the most valuable strategic partner of Russia was Ukraine. Russia stated multiple times, that Ukraine will be the final straw. If Ukraine is added to the NATO, than that will be the end of talking. This statement was written at least a thousand times. Now what happened? A pro-NATO coup was launched, which was practically a declaration of war against Russia. (We should cut the crap about the people favoring the new regime. They are worthless scumbags one inch away from a new coup.) So Russia started a covert war by taking Crimea.
>>
Remember, that the Russian Black Sea Navy was based in Sevastopol and it was an important military point for them, which was buttfucked by the pro-NATO regime.
The second was Donbass. The Russians sent arms and material there to rally the pro-Russian people. Ukraine has practically abandoned Russia, and Russia needed to act. People are saying what an asshole Russia is for sending men and material, but they don't care, that the NATO did the same. Why is that not important? The US sent volunteers, trainers, weapons, along with UK armored vehicles, French guns etc. Even small partners like Hungary have sent dozens of T-72 tanks to Ukraine for a ridicolous amount of money. Around 2 million Forint per tank. (Yeah I'm Hungarian.) So Russia can't support the separatist, but the NATO can? Ukraine is not a NATO member, so how it is a legal matter.
Today it is a different war. Not hot, not cold, more like a covert, and propaganda war. Not nearly similar to the cold war, because even the countries themselves don't know that they are at war.
Russia is not a young innocent girl, but the US and Europe is not that either. People should see both sides.
