What the FUCK is irony. I've been struggling to understand this for years now.
Dramatic irony is about the only definition of irony I understand. What I really want to put a definition to is the irony that DFW talks about. Take a sitcom, like Friends. Are the majority of the punchlines ironic? If I'm being the opposite of sincere, am I ironic? If I say "Get-r-done," in front of friends from the city, is it ironic?
Pic unrelated, I think.
There are different kinds and it can be broad and confusing
I usually think of it as being something contrary to what is expected
>X does Y expecting result Z
>however the act of doing Y in itself brought about the result (-Z)
>X is an object of irony
>>8731560
postmodernism had the sort of cynical, ironic flare that DFW was trashing on. you can view modernism as a sort of sincere effort at finding truths and what DFW was sort of pushing for was a return to sincerity that i don't think is necessarily the same as what you'd find in woolf's writing but has a certain vulnerability
Is literature the best medium in order to communicate to the masses as a whole?
Is there any form of media or communication that, if perfected can reach the entire world?
>>8731536
Films > Comics > Books
when it comes to the efficiency of communication
>>8731546
But films can't effectively communicate a through message. The most you'll ever get out of a film is 'Woah what a mind blow!'
Watching a 2 hour movie will never make somebody really re-think their life for example
>>8731554
Watch this then get back to me about films not effectively communicating a message.

>Professor of philosophy is spouting some broad brush illogical nonsense
How the fuck can ANYONE take the academia-media-publishing industrial complex seriously any longer? Not just this video but reams of acclaimed people line up to talk shit and either prove themselves idiots or look like they're aiming their arguments at some hypothetical idiot that I'm not sure exists.
Why am I supposed to pretend that some Soho condo dwelling latte sipping liberal arts degree holder's latest short story collection contains profound philosophical truths and enlightenment and is entertaining as well?

Also I hate how all these "great thinkers" just insult and judge without ever creating anything in addition of their own.

What does /lit/ think of In Search of Lost Time?
I'm about 60 pages into Swann's Way and it's very good. I just read the Madeleine bit which was honestly one of the most amazing passages I've ever read, I actually got chills while reading it.
But yeah I want to know if many people here have actually finished the novel and what they thought.
>>8731342
Which translation?
>>8732303
I'll add that I've only read about 40 pgs. of Swann's Way and the prose is beautiful but very long winded. Also, I'm not fluent in french so I'm reading it translated which might take away from the experience. It's gets really hard to follow his train of thought when he writes in this verbose manner (which he does often).
plebs always focus on the madeleine shit because its in the first 100 pages so everyone gets too it even if they give up, and it's banal enough that anyone can relate to it, like who doesn't know tastes and smells can trigger memories, oh shit it looks like proust got TRIGGERED by a pastry...but it really only gets good when you get into swann's love, then you gonna get some new ideas about love and relationships, when i think of swann's way i don't even remember the madeleine thing cuz its so obvious, you don't need to read proust to get that idea

I'm not entirely sure this thread belongs here on /lit/, but since it's the most wannabe-intellectual part of 4chan I'll post it anyways.
My question is very simple: does the US have something that can be called folk culture? If the answer is positive, in which states is folk culture more prevalent?
As a foreigner, my view of the U.S. is that of a country ridden with generic movies, music and literature. It seems that every thing that can be commercialized will be turned into a product. Furthermore, I can spot no relevant (other than language, of course) anglo tradition that has perpetuated itself across the years.
The only region where some sort of folk culture and popular roots still exist is in the deep south, specially among the black community and to a lesser extent the whites (Faulkner would be an example). I always get very confused when I ask someone to recommend me folk music and they say stuff like Bob Dylan. What's folk-ish about the damn guy?
What are the instruments of American folk culture? What are its themes and cultural roots? Is there some sort of folk literature going on? This is a serious thread and I don't mean to attack anyone, I'm genuinely interested.
>>8731235
I'm not American, but Canadian so that's close enough.
Yes, they have folk culture. Can I describe it to you, probably not.
Where you from?
>>8731235
>does the US have something that can be called folk culture?
yes. it has numerous folk cultures traditions in both music and literature, dotted across the contemporary borders of the usa. look into some oxford histories or bibliographies on whatever topic interests you and read up. if you're looking for some interesting american folk music, check out shape notes and spirituals. and john fahey, to see how an artist working slightly before and at the same time as dylan was working with folk materials differently than him. as for bob dylan, watch the doc 'no direction home' to see what people mean when they call him a folk musician.
and i should say: this is a literature board, not a music board.
>>8731264
I'm also interested in folk literature and oral traditions. I come from a country where we have a very rich scene of folk and popular writings and publications, with booklets and leaflets still being produced almost as handicrafts. I only used musical examples because I'm throughly ignorant about the subject of American folk literature.
>>8731252
I would truly like to have such a description or at least a recommendation of works dealing with this theme. I'm from Brazil.
my mom has terminal cancer
what books will make me feel better
None.
I hope you're not serious, but in case you are, my only advice is to stay with her as much as you can till the end, whenever that comes. It's my only regret as someone who lost a parent to cancer.

Alright, i made a thread on /his/ but I want to check it out with you guys here. I got Plato's complete works(the big book in pic related) from the library two days ago, and so far I have read the Apology, Phaedo, Crito, and Euthyphro. If I read the Symposium, The Republic, and maybe the Parminedes, would that be enough plato for me to jump into other philosophers, or should I grind through the entire book?
>>8730950
>Grind
Turn back now, child.
Read Phaedrus, Satesman and Meno between Symposium and Republic.
I will warn you that Parmenides is one of the most difficult dialogues.
>>8730991
Thanks man.
Also, can anyone rec me some of the essential aristotle's works to read after I finish up with Plato? I must warn you my school's library is absolute shit so I will probably not be able to get any less known titles. Also, I don't plan on spending too much time on Aristotle, I just want to get a solid understanding of him before I jump out to latin and more recent philosophers
To the depressed anon in the deleted thread, I don't know if you'll see this but it's worth trying.
>>8730860
It's okay anon. There are some good people you can talk to, but for me it pretty much was just a weekly meeting where I would vent and they would listen. It gave me at least one day every week that I looked forward to.
They gave me some good advice about trying to focus on positive things and being productive but in the end it was up to me to make it better. The anti-depressants also didn't magically make things better. The only real effect they had was reducing my emotional range, so instead of being miserable I was more apathetic. I'm sorry but I don't remember the names of the anti-depressants.
Eventually when I felt that my daily life was just kind of boring and not awful, I decided to reduce the dosage over a period of 3 months and then eventually stop. This then unlocked my emotional range again, and even though it was sometimes worse it allowed me to occationally be very happy.
I suggest you to keep on searching. If you're really miserable then try the pills, if they don't help after a few months then switch to other pills. If you have any friends or family that cares about you then stay in contact with them and make regular plans to see them.
Good luck anon. It might take a while but it's not impossible to get better.
Thanks

>The anti-depressants also didn't magically make things better. The only real effect they had was reducing my emotional range
this is why you shouldn't use anti-depressants, they might make your lows less low but your highs become less high aswell
>>8731066
Kinda bullshit
In my personal experience I had no highs to be stunted, it was just lows. I was a complete mess incapable of doing anything. Pills we very useful at the start just to keep me more stable so I could start getting my shit together.
But yes, it's not something you want to take for the rest of your life. Like OP I am starting to cut down now my life is boring and not so awful.
