why do we always have to have the need to compare them or make them compete with each other, its fucking stupid..both schools are valid approaches to dealing with the various problems of philosophy

this sort of weird primal need to always make everything a competition is quite odd, especially coming from many politically left thinking people on this board

its like if some idiot said "Yeah well Einstein was good, but was he better than Darwin"

its autist level bullshit

It all comes from not being able to respect each other and, to an extent, yourself.
>>
Both have their issues, analytical philosophers often are autists and continentals often wrap up bullshit in flowery language.

Because tribalism. It's why 4chan hates reddit, repubs hate dems, etc. It's this retarded reptilian-brain compulsion that most people are way too mentally cucked to recognize in themselves

Why is so much literature so dull and unnecessary?

So often I find myself reading some passage that is only there to sound pretty or link Situation A to Situation B?

It's boring as hell.

>"I sit up straight in my chair. The doctor taps the pen against the desk several times. I feel my heart begin beating harder now. Outside the sound of a bus horn echoes between the buildings. Pigeons scatter from a balcony across the way."

Dude get to the point. Nobody cares. I would much rather the author include a 500 word introduction to their work where they basically say what the novel is about, like "This novel is about how being a good person is difficult but necessary" or "This novel argues that rich people should not be unkind to poor people, but that social and economic structures encouraged them to behave so". You don't see mathematicians writing their theories in the most convoluted way possible. Scientists don't use flowery language to describe some biological process. Like dude, seriously, just get to the point. I'm not spending my entire Saturday reading 500 pages about how you struggle in social situations. There's a way of overcoming that, seriously.

Some girl in class said I remind her of Martin Eden. She was cute so I asked who that was and she recommended me this book called Martin Eden. Wow, really creative title. Self-titled novel, great. So I read like 100 pages of this thing and had to give up. Like, what is the point? The author is some dead white guy from like a thousand years ago. It just goes on and on about how he wants to be a writer and how he doesn't fit in with rich people since he's a sailor and all. A real blowhard type guy too, not the kind I want to be reading about. There was a fight scene with the main character but the author doesn't even write about it since it happens before the book starts. Like dude, you should friggin *started* with that scene. Jeez. Anyway it's just really boring, I don't understand why people read that stuff. I gave the girl her book back and told her it was great, thanks. She didn't seem to understand that I was joking so she now thinks I'm super into made-up novels, which I'm just not. So we have this day on Thursday and I just know she is going to spend the entire time talking about how great some book was and I'm going to be bored the entire time until I make my move. Just saw that 4chan had a literature blog and wanted to ask why the heck you guys bother to waste your time on stuff you know already. Like what facts do I learn from reading Martin Eden? It's just entertainment and it's not even entertaining. /rant

Is Being and Nothingness worth picking up, /lit/? I saw it in the bookstore after picking up Crippled America: How To Make America Great Again by President Trump.

I've only gotten back into reading recently, so is it too much for me right now or...? (by the way, I really like the cover.)

Does the phrase Being in itself make any sense to you? If not dont bother. This would be a weird place to start reading philosophy. Anyway sartre is only useful for plays and short stories, not real philosophy.

What's your favourite book you've read this year so far?

I read both Don Quixote (a genuine joy and pleasure until he dies, then it was heartbreaking, especially Sancho's final words to Don Quixote, expressing how he should get out of bed and they should go on adventures as shepherds and Moby Dick and now I don't know how I can exist anymore.

War and War by Laszlo Krasznahorkai, one of the strangest books I've ever read. I can safely say I didn't understand at least half of it and what the fuck was even happening with the manuscript frame narrative thing but by the end it made me feel like absolute shit. It was so painful to read for me that I would find any excuse not to pick it up and read it so I read like 3 other books simultaneously before I could finish it. "To awaken the modern world, one must praise laziness. The lazy man has an infinitely keener perception of metaphysical reality than the active one."

Steinbeck waxed praise for his NEET character Mack in Cannery Row. There's a paragraph in there somewhere where he calls laziness a virtue, iirc.
Mack "could of [sic] been president if he wanted to be" but fuck that when you can live off other people's work.

Once, when Chuang Tzu was fishing in the P'u river, the king of Ch'u sent two officials to go and announce to him: "I would like to trouble you with the administration of my realm."

Chuang Tzu held onto the fishing pole and, without turning his head, said, "I have heard that there is a sacred tortoise in Ch'u that has been dead for three thousand years. The king keeps it wrapped in cloth and boxed, and stores it in the ancestral temple. Now would this tortoise rather be dead and have its bones left behind and honored? Or would it rather be alive and dragging its tail in the mud?"

"It would rather be alive dragging its tail in the mud," said the two officials.

Chuang Tzu said, "Go away! I'll drag my tail in the mud!"

what words and what sentence structures will make my prose more aesthetically pleasing to read?

>also, I want to distract my readers from my bad content.
typical prose stylist mindset.

Don't think it works like that. It's not about collecting the best words, Donald.

For a while try banning yourself from writing words you don't use in everyday conversation. Look for the musicality in ordinary words and try to make them flow.
