did you ever try and find out what your professors wrote their dissertations on?
>American lit prof who wrote extensively on hamlin garland but never taught him
>contemporary american lit prof who wrote on william s. burroughs
>philosophy professor who wrote on Kant, Nietzsche, and Blanchot
I think it reveals a lot about the interests of professors

>I think it reveals a lot about the interests of professors

Sure, but you could also just, you know, ask them about their interests if you're curious.

This, OP. It's better to get a good conversation out of it. I used to ask mine often--though many of them brought it up if they were still actively conferencing about the topic.

Advanced Arabic prof wrote about the linguistic devices and properties of the rhetoric of radical islam, heavily focused on isil. Hot syrian woman, but that was perhaps a red flag

It's likely that you don't like his writing style as opposed to the book itself being bad. I'd say give it a little more time, but you might be far enough in to call it quits.

So, Im looking for a crossplatform app (android and windows) which saves to a cloud for me. Must have pages and word count.
does anything like this exist for free?

fuck the cloud, just write it in .txt and email it to your self.

It does seem like should be a program somewhere doesn't it? Online storage with offline editing where you can upload the updates when you reconnect with the internet.

If something like it doesn't already exist for free, I might write it myself using google docs as a base. It doesn't seem like it would be that difficult.

Dropbox and any editor of choice. I prefer Vim. Sublime text is a bit easier to set up and very customisable.

Same here. Sort of focused on the casual sexual relationships more than I would have preferred. I wanted more about the character's internal thoughts/feelings.

Congrats on your opinion OP. Is it the first you've ever had? Is that why you're here?

Do you guys ever find that motivation comes and goes like dust in the displacement of pressure in the atmosphere causing physical exertions on the surface?... I can't into science.

I have good days and bad days. Some days I fly through pages that look exactly like I want them to be. Some days I sit and fight and can't get focussed and barely get a page done. Even knowing that time, money, and youth are running out, I cannot force it. Sometimes inspiration is a firehose, threatening to drown everything, other times it is a trickle, barely enough to sustain, let alone quench, the thirst.

Been 4 days or so since I've written anything. This is the most time I've spent without working on a book since August, I think. Well, hopefully the next time I get an urge to write, get that motivation, I won't fuck it up.
>>
>>8735474
>motivation
I have found that time is far more valuable than motivation. If you make the time, even if you are "wasting" it, you are making progress. If you wait until you "feel like it" you can lose it entirely.

What are you writing, anon?

Translation:

>Slavery is rational and legitimate; a zulu or a landim does not represent anything useful in this world. To civilize it, either by religion or by any other means, is to try to give him something that he cannot acquire. The right thing to do is to force him - since he is not a person - to serve the ends of civilization. To enslave him is rational; the degenerate igualitarian concept, with which Christianity has poisoned our social concepts, has damaged, however, this rational attitude. Some peoples, like the English, have hypocritized the concept, and thus managed to serve civilization.

Meh it was written in a time that this would be a popular consensus.

Plus Pessoa came from an aristocratic background and lived in South Africa if I recall correctly.

No.

England was much kinder to the Indians then they ever were the Africans though. Introduced english and modern education to the whole society on top of technology.

I think we should make a torrent tracker for literature and philosophical texts. That way we could literally build the biggest library in the world. And it would be easy to find what you want, and we'd have strict criteria for uploading so know what you download is good quality. This would make our lives so much easier - any book we want available in pdf or ePub. It would of course be ratioless. We'd start with /lit/core and work our way up. Of course the tracker will be built on gazelle

Anyone interested in helping engineer this dream?

The best Latin poets are definitely equal to the best Greeks but Greek prose, especially philosophy, is much more logical to me. There's a reason so few people wrote Latin philosophy before the middle ages.

Latin is so goddamn clumsy, it's like a beat-up old truck. Greek is a rocket ship.

It's hard to explain exactly what I mean, though. The defectiveness of the Latin verb is definitely part of it but only part. I think Greek's broader vocabulary helps too. But there's still something else there that I can't articulate.

You can tell literary Latin is a language of farmer aristocrats. Greek is a language of heroes.

Greek is just clear as glass mang.

I want to read the Bible solely to understand references within major literary works, not so much for religious purposes.

I was wondering which books of the bible are the frequently referenced or at least which ones to not bother with.

The lit discord said these were the most important but I'd like to get a second opinion.

Genesis
Exodus
Daniel
Ecclesiastes
Job
Psalms
Romans
Gospels (Matthew, Mark, John, Luke)
Revelation
Apocrypha

I find it interesting that our secular societies no longer teach the Bible, so we have cases like this where people have to educate themselves on the most famous stories ever written.

Is this a bad thing?

Martin is a fat hack. He rode to fame on the backs of much greater men who came before him and the wave of popular culture.

I hope he dies of a very painful heart attack. It looks imminent. One can only hope.

What a fucking idiot. A woman of Eowyn's stature wouldn't start an affair because her legitimate husband who she loves has a small dick. How many royal women could have actually gotten away with three illegitimate children anyway? Cersei is a bullshit character.
