Why is this book so critically praised?
It legitimately sounds like a book some edgy school anime would be made on. I feel like I really would've liked this book if I read it when I was 16 and not 22

>sounds like a book some edgy school anime would be made on
that's because edgy school anime is influenced by it
To me the worst part wasn't Holden's edgy comments nor his snark attitude with everybody, the thing I couldn't stand was he molesting his sister at the end of the book.
I thought the "he rape his sister Phoebe" was just a meme, but when I actually read the book it made me very, very uncomfortable.

Rape victims are more inclined to rape. He was raped thus he raped.
Welcome back.
Chapters 41 through 45.
Happy new year. How did the catch up days go? Let's have another poll.

We appear to have gotten through a large chunk of travel writing based on Dumas' own experiences. Now we are in paris there is a large influx of old characters making appearances, and Dantes seems ready to start all this revenge stuff he seems so keen about.

>Some topics for discussion
What is the relevance of Maximillian Morrel's appearance? What effect did he have upon Dantes?
How accurate do you find the description of Dantes as vampiric?
How do you suppose Dantes feels towards Albert?
Was giving Caderousse wealth a premeditated form of revenge considering what it did to him?
How are you finding Dumas' style of telling most of the plot and exposition through dialogue?
If anyone has any more feel free to post them. I never did any study of literature past high school level, so sorry if these aren't the best points for discussion.
What is a good film or television adaptation to watch once I am done? Has anyone seen pic related, 2002 film?
I used to be on board with the whole "lol Ben Stiller meditation master new plebtheist", but holy shit, listening to this guy's podcast and some of his interviews, how can anyone not consider this dude a genius?
Can you imagine him and Zizek in a debate without the latter resorting to continental cop-outs in a blabbering sniffing frenzy, while Harris keeps a Still mindset and a rational line of thinking?

What are some of your favorite moments OP? Preferably with links.
Objectively the best Steinbeck book.
I feel bad for you if you read Steinback aside from mandatory school reading.
Mein Goethe, I just read this one, and it is amazing. It is at the same time profound and tender. Made me want to read more Steinbeck.

>thinking that the pronunciation of Goethe is anything like English "God"
It's pronounced like Ger-tuh, jabroni.
>Mann's diary records his attraction to his own 13-year-old son, "Eissi" — Klaus Mann: "Klaus to whom recently I feel very drawn" (June 22). In the background conversations about man-to-man eroticism take place; a long letter is written to Carl Maria Weber on this topic, while the diary reveals: "In love with Klaus during these days" (June 5). "Eissi, who enchants me right now" (July 11). "Delight over Eissi, who in his bath is terribly handsome. Find it very natural that I am in love with my son ... Eissi lay reading in bed with his brown torso naked, which disconcerted me" (July 25). "I heard noise in the boys' room and surprised Eissi completely naked in front of Golo's bed acting foolish. Strong impression of his premasculine, gleaming body. Disquiet" (October 17, 1920).
Hmm, really makes you think.

It is the biography of a middle class woman in victorian England trying to express herself beyond the constraining norm of society.

A fantasy series of romance set on seven continents with a cuck main character that enjoys cheerios. Co-collaboration between John Green and George RR Martin.
So ignoring the lack of quality in what I've written here, could the following be said to be written in dactylic hexameter? I know the meter isn't meant for English but I'd quite like to experiment.
Fourth of April nineteen fourteen, a boy came of age.
Barely a man when war was declared throughout Europe,
Like his pals he was anxious to heed the call of king
And country to enlist in a war to end all wars.
Comments on rhythm and acceptable deviations from what is 'meant' when writing in this meter would also be cool. Thanks.
That should say 'meant to be'

Did anyone here read those award winners on goodreads for SFF? Like pic related
First: i'm not trolling and don't want to start an argument, just curious.
Next: Could I get an idea of how many /sffg/ people use ereaders vs purchase physical novels.
My theory is that the answer will be different to people who never read series or genre fiction. The fact that many of the best series in /sffg/ are up to ten novels in length has to have an affect: do readers use e-versions to save space or do long series make readers more likely to want to collect?
>What made you start writing?
>I've wanted to be a writer since I was six years old. I couldn't think of any better way to make a living and truthfully, I think it's the only thing I'm any good at. So it's a relief I turned out not to be deluded.

She has certainly carved out a nice life for herself. And she's very good at writing books that sell well.

What's sum good Tolkien type shit that isn't Tolkien? I love the idea of making new romantic myths that can speak to a modern generation, but I feel like most newer Tolkien kinda stuff has just become "world building" wank material for the author to show off his undergrad understanding of Medieval cultures. Am I just too cynical for this shit now?
tolkien-type shit
that isn't tolkien
do you mean fantasy? try Fritz Liebers' books about Fahfrd and the Grey Mouser (if they ever met Aragorn, they'd steal his horse), or Poul Anderson's "The Broken Sword".
or:
"And then there was Twisk, who usually appeared as an orange-haired maiden wearing a gown of gray gauze. One day while wading in the shallows of Tilhilvelly Pond, she was surprised by the troll Mangeon. He seized her about the waist, carried her to the bank, ripped away the gray gauze gown and prepared to make an erotic junction. At the sight of his priapic instrument, which was grotesquely large and covered with warts, Twisk became frantic with fear. By dint of jerks, twists and contortions she foiled the best efforts of the sweating Mangeon. But her strength waned and Mangeon's weight began to grow oppressive. She tried to protect herself with magic, but in her excitement she could remember only a spell used to relieve dropsy in farm animals, which, lacking better, she uttered, and it proved efficacious. Mangeon's massive organ shriveled to the size of a small acorn and became lost in the folds of his great gray belly.
Mangeon uttered a scream of dismay, but Twisk showed no remorse. Mangeon cried out in fury: "Vixen, you have done me a double mischief, and you shall do appropriate penance."
He took her to a road which skirted the forest. At a crossroads he fashioned a kind of pillory and affixed her to this construction. Over her head he posted a sign: DO WHAT YOU WILL WITH ME and stood back. "Here you stay until three passersby, be they dolts, lickpennies or great earls, have their way with you, and that is the spell I invoke upon you, so that in the future you may choose to be more accommodating to those who accost you beside Tilhilvelly Pond."
- Jack Vance, "Lyonesse"
