American here. I'm trying to figure out how the fuck British military organization works.

Like in WW1 the 6th (Service) Battalion, Somerset Light Infantry is nominally under the 13th Regiment of Foot, but was under the Command of the 43rd Infantry Brigade. The other battalions in the 13th were in completely different places.

Are those regimental distinctions purely symbolic, just like the regional name?

In return here's a Trench-Kitty.

They also had pals battalions in ww1 where friends could jiin up in one group

Also each regiment was based on an area like the summer set group so an entire village of town would lose all there men after the war funny isnt it
>>
>>32621444
Regional names did not necessarily mean that the regiment was regional. Many older regiments got given regional names in 1782 in order to drum up support for the 4 simultaneous wars Britain was fighting. However pretty soon after that it was abandoned but the names stayed.

The Somerset Light Infantry OP mentioned, for instance, never had any Pals Battalions raised in WW1.

I joined in 1961, but having had two sons and a grandson go through the process since and three brothers, a father, grandfather and great grandfather around to tell me drunken (and possibly fictitious tales) I'm fairly well versed.

British Army Infantry Regiments are split, for recruiting purposes, into national and local. The Gurkhas and other Commonwealth (or, in my time, Empire) are exempt from this for obvious purposes, but the rest of my post will also apply to them. "National" are the Foot Guards, who despite being split into Grenadier, Coldstream (English, mainly), Irish, Welsh and Scottish have recruits from all over the UK. I joined the Grenadier Guards, who mainly recruited from Southern England. It was not exclusive, however, just the majority. Parachute Regiment were also nationally recruited, aside from in the WW2 and immediate aftermath where they were mostly drawn from County Regiments and Guards.

Local, or County, Regiments are self explanatory. I am reliably informed that you could join a County Regiment with no connection to the county, but you would be in the absolute minority so no one really did unless they were Officers - who came from mainly Southern England. My eldest brother was in the Dorset Regiment, because we're from the county of Dorset and he was conscripted as such. After WW2, this was eased somewhat as Regiments were amalgamated (usually into the neighbouring county, so Dorset and Devon joined together) or scrapped.

In your example, the 6th Somersets was the battalion - the deploy-able and physical unit. 13th of Foot was their historic designation, not in use by the Great War but still on the books. 43 Infantry Brigade would have different units rotating in and out of it all the time, it's not a particularly important designation.

Hey /k/ civvy fag here. I've never discharged a firearm or anything, but I'm really interested in films that portray accurate scenarios with weapons and tactics.

I'm just working on a small animation project about an insertion team entering an hostile territory with APCs and heading through buildings, etc. What are the weapons operators use and some formations? I'm planning to have about 6 good guys, (probably SAS) but then again it doesn't matter.

I'm aiming for realistic looking loadouts for a squad and how they would place themselves in formation.

Any advice from operators would be cool.

Like I said, I'm a civvy fag. So I don't know what kind of weaponry you're allowed/use for something like a breach.

Also, if you guys could tell me. Is this chart legit?
16 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
As far as the chart goes it conflicts with the Australian Army signals we use so I'd say it's fiction. Better to get an American LRO to confirm for you though.

If you're having an SAS breach team they would likely arrive quickly in a 4wd rather than an apc. APCs are geared more towards conventionAl warfighting.

In terms if weapons think M4s woth a lot of Gucci attachments and sights. MP5s and shotguns are also very popular for urban clearance. Depending in the presence of civpop will dictate what kind and it many grest design are used. Grenades are very important.

In terms of uniforms just referance a fee pictures from Afghanistan or police raids. That should set you on the right track.
>>
For formations a line or a double diamond would likely be sedan in an urban area.

For troopers in the squad generally marksman up front, lMg on flank of mostly likely enemy attack. Grenadier reare and 2ic/ Secco on the other flank.

Use the fully automatic military style assault function to blow all of them to smithereens through the walls. A 30 round clip in less than five seconds, that should deal with them. Might accidentally shoot up a school in the background but that's collateral damage for ya.

I'm posting this here because I don't know where else to post it.

I am a sophomore at a state school and I hate it. I did well my first two semester but this past semester I shit the bed. I can't change majors because if I change now I won't graduate on time and I won't have enough money to finish. I commute and work two jobs just to be able to go.

I want to join the Navy. I took 4 years of NJROTC and have well over 40 credits so I'd finish bootcamp as an E3.

I was wondering if anyone else on here dropped out to join?
What branch?
would you recommend doing it?

Finish college you pathetic piece of shit, even with a 2.0 GPA. A degree is better than no degree, and then you can enlist if you want. Don't fuck yourself because you're afraid of schoolwork.
>>
Suck it up, finish college with good grades, join as an officer.

20 years as enlisted is a horrible fate. Less than 20 is a waste of time because you'll come out 4-10 years later and be at the exact place you are now.
20-30 years as an officer eating better food, sleeping in better beds with better on shore housing and more pay 4 years in then a senior chief with 20ys is the only way to go if your smart.

t. 4 and out enlisted SONAR tech

What do you guys think of the RS556 rifle made by Rheinmetall and Steyr Mannlicher to replace the HK G36 in German armed forces?

It's advertised as a more modern alternative to the G36 but I absolutely fail to see what makes the RS556 more modern. It uses the same type of action (short stroke gas piston) in an AR-15 type body and as far as I can tell they didn't even take full advantage of the piston system by getting rid of the buffer tube.

What are your thoughts?
20 posts and 4 images submitted.
>>
>>32620807
OP i have no thoughts what so ever on your rifle but I did have a question that I didnt want to start a new thread for.

Weapon lights. I mount my light under my muzzle. It doesnt cast a shadow, doesnt get any dirtier than anywhere else. Why do guys mount lights on the side? Ive never seen anyone except in movies with the light mounted under the barrel. What gives?
>>
>>32620830
If the light is mounted to the right side of the rifle, it's pretty easy and comfortable to manipulate with your fingers. If it's under the barrel you might have to change your grip o operate it properly. Just my hypothesis.
>>
>>32620863
I use a vertical grip. I actuate it with my knuckle, or if I actually have time I can just finger fuck it on. I only use on/off lights no strobe.

Unless this sails past unnoticed it probably won't pass. That said demographically NYS is fucked, liberals exist well beyond the Westchester border, for example in every single city with a population over 40k.

Rochester NY even had it's own assault weapon law prior to the SAFE act
>>
>>32620789
Basically this, democracy is killing our republic and for NY the only way gun rights will be restored is through supreme court rulings. As the previous annon posted demographics are against freedom in this state. I live in Albany but saving up for new second residence out of state so I can one day regain the rights I had growing up further south

>>
>>32620722
I don't get why anyone buys them in 9mm, the platform was clearly designed around .45 - take a look at the stellar reliability of the M&P45 - like 2nd or 3rd in it's class, amongst all .45acp pistols. I hear the .40's aren't as bad as the 9's - which are by far subpar tier, go buy a glock 17/19 instead
>>
>>32620722
M&P 101:
9mm's are trash tier in this platform, pick another gun
.40's are adequate
.45 M&P45's are fucking fantastic, the only downside is less rounds (flush) than it's competitors - G21, USP45, FNX/FNP, HK45.
The full sized M&P45 beats out every other .45 in reliability except for the USP45 and HK45, and is a fantastic shooter

Explain to me in detail why this won't work. Countries would have to dedicate their entire Navys to fighting this thing and still lose. It's nothing knew it's simply modern technology but upscaled. We've cucked the world with our carriers, lets now cuck them with our MSBs (Modern Super Battleships).
