How about this:
Take the montana, remove all its guns
Still have it nuclear powered, make its citadel smaller and thinner then offset it to one side.
Then put a bit flat bit of metal down the full length of it so we can launch aircraft from it.
If we added some lifts, then we could store the aircraft inside the ship too!
I wonder why no one else has thought of this.

Oh I just noticed you said this instead of Iowa class, this is even dumber. Iowa at least has the advantage of being already laid down and needing just upgrades, building a never-built battleship class from scratch is just dumb.

Because then all it takes is one small boat or submarine with one single rail gun to punch a hole in it and cripple it. Having fuck huge piles of long range bombardment doesn't help you if you can be taken out before you can use all of those weapons. Aircraft carriers do anything that the weirdo rail gun battleship could do better, including long range bombardment when you realize just how much power is consumed and how much wear and tear firing a rail gun generates.

Since you wouldn't have to worry about muzzle blast or fire arcs in a battleship v battleship fight, it would make much more sense to go with an N3-style design with an armored citadel in the style of the Zumwalt's superstructure with two turrets ahead and one aft, flanked by CIWS/HELLADS/etc, with a second armored citadel to the rear for the reactor, which could then be flanked by 200-300 or so peripheral and traditional VLS cells and the helicopter deck.

Armor it like a WWII BB, possibly with laminate armor to save weight and kill the shaped charges in ASM's, and give it the RCS reduction features of the Zumwalt.

Now you've got God's own flagship and surface combatant.
