ITT: Artwork you created that you would like to be reviewed by /ic/

This is a Giant Spider I'm making for an animated short. So far, i've only got major shapes and secondaries blocked out.
It's suposed to be super scary, but maybe i'm overdoing some detail it on the legs.

What do you people think?

Coming from someone who is deathly afraid of spiders IRL, it's not really all that scary. It's pretty mundane for a spider design. I feel like there should be more of a complex monstrosity or something to it than what you have so far.

hey, that's some really solid criticism, thank you, anon!

Would you care to elaborate what makes a monster "scary", in your opinion?
The animated short is cartoony and all, but on this particular design, it should feel menancing and threatening
>>
>>2491752
Not that guy but the hair on spiders is always freaky and lots of dangerous stuff always has popping/colorful designs to display they are venomous like the butt part on a black widow.

But your question "what makes a monster scary" that IS the design process. You look at references study them and understand what makes them what they are and use that knowledge in your design

I think it's something interesting to discuss so I'll contribute, anon.

I think a lot of what goes into "trippy" art are a lot of use of color as well as creating semi optical illusions or things for the eye to follow (More so than normal compositions).

This is especially true in the use of text which sometimes can become the art itsself

While I don't listen to the grateful dead, my fiance has a book of their artwork and a lot of the pictures in there are just flyers meant to attract attention to their performances.

I like a lot of work like this and find the style really fun to look at even as a sober person.

I don't know when this one I'm sharing dates to or if it's official Dead work or not but it shows what I'm talking about well.
>>
This one shows a great example of how well words become part of the artwork itsself. I think anyone looking to work in graphic design should study work from the 60s because a lot of the tricks used are good to pick apart and understand why they work as an advertisemet as well as a piece of art or something people would like to collect.

a quick and cheap way would be on photoshop use different displacement maps then colorize with the color curves and levels.

Use all of your space in a smart way. Glue jars/cans to your walls and store one specific kind of tool in them, keep all of your same pens/brushes together, etc. Also socks help a lot for that, the elastic keeps the whole thing together. Also keep in mind that you'll have to tidy up your shits regularly or else it's gonna be hell to find back anything in there.

Does anyone have any ideas on how I could extend the bottom of this image? I want it to keep getting darker but I am a novice in photoshop. I can make a layer of about 1" of the bottom of the buildings so it looks like they are taller but then there is a stripped pattern because of the light color being below the darkness.

I do not know if this is the right board to ask this.

use content aware fill

Choose Edit>Fill and from the Use menu, choose Content-Aware. Click OK and Photoshop fills the selection with surrounding pixels and blends them.

Found a website called design doll and
im having a trouble deciding if I should buy it since people might not like it.

Well, my plan is to only use it as a reference kinda like a little icon at the side so im not gonna trace it like a cunt but is it still considered cheating, if it isn't is it worth the money?

>people might not like it.
so you want to use its as a mannequin whats the problem?seems super useful but why buy it when you can just use a 3d model and pose it in something like blender for free?
>>
>>2506885
>is it still considered cheating
it isn't cheating as long as you don't get caught
>if it isn't is it worth the money

That's up for you to decide. It's always just faster to draw something first then find a photo to ref what you lack knowledge in. If you're a bitch slave to the software because you're a hobbyist trash looking for shortcuts then buy it. If you're going to end up using it for every pose you draw you really should consider learning how to draw.

Shit now im confused any third opinion here?

>"There was a time when the artist withdrew to a bare attic to live in seclusion for an ideal. For subject, a plate of apples sufficed. Today, however, art has become an integral part of our lives, and the successful artist cannot set himself apart. He must do a certain job, in a definite manner, to a definite purpose, and with a specified date of delivery."

>"live in seclusion for an ideal"

What does Loomis mean by this? An ideal what? Study environment? Is Loomis implying that if it weren't for the need to live in society, the creative atmosphere of an artist would be greatly improved? Does solitude really help art students grow?

Really considering building a log cabin in Alaska right about now

This doesn't sound true, to be honest. Artists have always had to deal with requirements and deadlines. Thought it might have been a goal (and still is for some), it's not like renaissance painters painted for the sole sake of "enlightenment" and survived on fumes and thin air. Artists were for the most part commissioned by powerful people who wanted to see neat stuff.

It's pretty much been a constant throughout history that art has been produced for "entertainment", however you want to define that. Even religious art during the Middle Ages was commissioned, not simply done because artists were particularly religious or inspired (look up the history of patronage if you're curious, it's always been a big deal for art to be commissioned by nobles, the wealthy, and religious institutions).

The one thing that has changed in the past century is that art is a lot more accessible to the common folk, but that doesn't mean the way it's made has radically changed. The timelines are different, the demands are different, yes. People who work for the entertainment industry will spend a day to a few weeks on a piece, instead of years (though keep in mind the "final" products, films and games, still make years to make)

What hasn't changed is the "purpose" of art and the relationship people have to it. Are you less likely to reach enlightenment through your work because you're making a videogame or an ad campaign instead of a single painting? Debatable, especially if you look at the impact that the works of certain artists have had on the entertainment industry. Were people who commissioned artists before looking specifically for "enlightened" art? If you consider the subject matter of most artworks pre-dating the modern era, fuck, probably not.

Saying the focus of today's art has changed is like saying today's music has gotten shitty compared to what it was in the 70s/60s/1700s/whatever.. Greater or more fondly remembered works tend to endure, while trash falls into obscurity.
>>
As for what ends up making "great" artists, it's a complete crapshoot. The one constant I can see throughout the ages is that more successful artists than not have benefited from a formal art education, but besides that it's whatever gets you inspired and makes you produce results.

Seeing as some people thrive on constant stress and activity I can't see seclusion as being the ideal environment for "the artist". It might be ideal for you, but that's relative to every person.

i had always like this quote from xenakis

Imitation is an existential mistake. So, to escape from the trivial cycle of relationships in music, the musician, the artist, must be absolutely independent, which means absolutely alone.
