Hey folks
as an artist, i feel like it's a really practical skill for me, i mean i find it easy to draw something when i have a clear image in my head and that is why i often end up drawing fanart
although art is my favourite thing, i feel like i am not very creative. do you have any resources/tips on how to become more imaginative, etc?
any help is appreciated senpai

I don't really know any resources on how to get more creative. I think it's better to look for places you can find ideas. For me, that is always having paper and a pen or pencil on me so I can sketch what I see. Things that interest me, like trees, buildings, people walking and sitting around. Others have big folders on their PC with a lot of artwork they like. There probably is a theme or art that you are drawn to. That's probably also why fanart works for you. What more interests you?

Creativity comes from fooling around.
You have to keep on trial and errorring until you get something good.

This guy's a musician, but he explains the creative process pretty well and how creative people create things.

Ted Talks are generally geared towards academics, but there's things to get out of some of their videos.

Creativity isn't something that you work on with exercises. It's something you need to keep on doing.

thanks for the advice mate
i usually like interesting colors and surreal stuff, i like mythology, symbolism, history, pretty pretentious stuff usually i guess
i often write ideas down when im on the train or stuff, but when i get to work it suddenly all seems really stupid to me. like there is no real value to what im working on. idk

Hey so I have 2 questions I thought maybe someone here could help me on;

I have saved on my computer three of these paintings from some year 12 (age 16-17) New Zealand student from the NZQA art folio boards about 2007-2009 and I'm wondering if it seems at all possible to hunt down who the artist was. I'm not sure why I didn't note the artist as I saved it at the time but from what I can remember I'm not sure the site even named the artist to begin with.

Secondly what is the word on using un-credited (e.g. artist unknown) art in university assignments? Would it be legit if I just clearly stated the artist as unknown and that I don't claim to be the artist? I believe in crediting the artist where-ever possible, and damn are obscure New Zealanders hard to find!

P.s. I don't really know anything about deep web or whatever so I'm not sure the capabilities.

Sorry if wrong board or whatev

Anon, i haven't read Loomis but i am drawing portraits from over three years.
And i can tell you that these two peraons don't look the same.
The proportions are not at all same. And in my opinion details of measurements and proportions matter and yes that of shading is a sexondary thing.

Do I have bad luck or is this the new norm?

Last January I paid in full for a single commission, the artist is still working on it but haven't finished and has been finishing other newer commissions in the mean time. Then in late December I asked another artist for something, paid him and have yet to see a sketch. He told me he was in the hospital for a fever in December.

What is the average work time for a single image with no background? Why does it take these people so long? They got their money, why can't I get my art? And I won't be mentioning names.

No background? 2 weeks TOPS. Sounds like you got scammed or taken. You paid in full, nothing you can do now.

You shouldn't have paid in full at the start.

I'm sorry OP, that's not how it should be.

since i was a kid i always wanted to draw, and now that i'm 19 i'm still fairly shit at it, but the thing that makes me feel bad about it is that since 3 years ago or so i don't even draw anymore because everytime i try to i see how bad i am and i just can't bear it, so i systematically throw the paper away and forget about it, untill after days, weeks or months i just feel the need to draw something again, and then the same shit happens

is there anyway to snap out of this? i don't even want to become really good, i just want to draw decently enough so i don't feel like shit everytime i do something that is supposed to make me feel better

I haven't drawn since my mother died in September, and I decided to try and draw on paper again. I may go over it digitally and fix it later, but I was wondering if there are any serious issues, it was drawn in pen so I know the little guy on top isn't as good as I wanted, this was done in one sitting with a no name brand pen and some chink colored pencils. Ive also never drawn anything remotely pornographic, and my arts normally a western kind of pseudo realism.

How come there are tons of drawing books worth reading (primarily figure related) but only a few quality books on painting?

I've already read Alla Prima and the stuff by Speed, Payne and bits of Gurney. It feels like that's it.

Because drawing is foundational. You can become a good painter by drawing all the time but you can't become a good draftsman by painting all the time.
>>
>>2498927
I'm at the point where drawing really isn't a problem for me, but painting is, like the actual handling of it seems so challenging compared to pencil and charcoal. I actually think my painting ability has deteriorated since I started focusing exclusively on drawing.

At what point one should start thinking about switching to drawing tablets?
Shouldn't you familiarise yourself with crayons, coloured pencils and other real materials before attempting to replicate the effect digitally? Why did you switch? Do you think you did it too early / too late?

you should learn all the basics in pencil and charcoals first or at the very least use traditional for studies even if you paint illustrations in photoshop, I started using digital in 2004 but I kept doing all my studies in pencils. Perspective, figure drawing, stilllives, ect.

Once in my sophomore college illustration class we were to paint a figure with a tattoo. I did mine in digital because that's just what I did my illustrations in but the teacher was hardcore into traditional media(pencils mostly). Now, she was a very annoy teacher but she's fucking a fucking amazing illustrator(Lisa French). She just had a very limited view of illustration from her time 80s/90s and only believed in traditional forms of illustration jobs like for advertisements, books covers, and shit like that. She really didn't understand that the times were changing and there has been a huge shift in the illustration market in the last 10 years or so.

But anyways. I did my illustration in digital and she got all pissy about and told me to do it in pencil or acrylic. I went home, opened the small pack of prismacolor pencils I got years ago, and finished the illustration in an hour and half that looked just as photorealistic as my digital painting did. That was the first time I ever used colored pencils. She was grumpy toward me ever since.

The point is, it really doesn't matter what media you use. In the end art theory can be applied to anything and works just as easy between digital and traditional.
>>
>>2498857
I really need to proofread shit before I post it.

One thing I forgot to add about the benefit of doing all your studies in traditional media. You get to sell them. People fucking love landscape and still life paintings. You can sell a small landscape painting easily for $500 or more.

Here's what ya do. Go get a nice portable easel and go to any downtown area in your city. Setup somewhere with a lot of foot traffic and start your studyin and paintin. Odds are people will stop and watch you a bit. Someone will offer to buy it on the spot. Or at the very least offer to buy it when it's finished and give you their contact info.

You can make some nice money doing this. At the very least enough to keep paying for your oils, canvas, and studies.

>>2498861
fuckig nice anon. i will keep this in mind. fuck its

So /ic/, I'm thinking of getting into digital drawing and I'm eyeing the new iPad Pro. Price is not an issue, however I've heard that the slightly newer 9.7" model has a True Tone display, whereas the 12.9" one doesn't.

Is True Tone a meme or is it actually good for drawing? I intend to draw with my iPad both indoors and outdoors, but the 9.7" model seems too small for me... Should I wait for the 12.9 model to be updated? Or is it worth buying already?

Please don't reply if you just intend to dissuade me from buying it, because I have quite a few reasons to buy it (not drawing alone). I just want the opinion of people who've tried it out or own it.
13 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
The 12.9" has a bigger size to actually draw on it, where as the 9.7" is not only smaller but it even distorts the color if you turn on the true tone feature.

If going by the annual release date, the updated 12.9" should come out at the earliest in November. But it could also be in a year because the 9.7" just came out.
>>
>>2498748
I see. What do you mean about colour distortion though? Are you saying it's actually worse to draw with True Tone on?

I was under the impression that True Tone just made things easier on the eyes, which sounds like a good thing given how much time I already spend in front of a screen...

As for the update, I don't know what to do. I desperately want the 12.9 model but I also don't want to regret buying it a few months from now...
