The urge to tell posterity “I was here” runs through art from Jackson Pollock, who allegedly hid a giant signature in one of his most famous abstract paintings, right back to Jan van Eyck, the grandfather of oil painting. His masterpiece, The Arnolfini Portrait, contains an elaborate Latin signature on the wall behind the couple, "Jan van Eyck was here 1434", while in the mirror above, two tiny figures, discernible only with a magnifying glass, stand in the position of the artist looking at the scene, one of them – generally presumed to be van Eyck himself – raising his hand in greeting to viewers down the ages (see image below).

I bought acrylics, this is my first painting, i tried an impressionist style. How can I improve?
>>2509273
By buying oils. Your painting looks quite decent though. If only you'd have put in the amount of detail you put in the trees in the wheat and sun, it would have been really nice.

This. The trees are pretty great
Thread for questions that don't need their own thread.
How do I make fine lines with spraypaint? I am working with some large ass vinyl posters I picked up from the mall(basically free canvases)and want to make some paintings on them. So far the process has been very tedious. I tried masking off areas and even though it works it is taking too long. My first painting already taking me four months going on since I have to work crazy 12/hr shifts. I just want to get this one done. But the problem is stalling since now I have to detail the foreground character.
Should I just get an airbrush kit to do the details? I dunno.
What is a good channel/course for learning how to paint digitally? My linework has gotten very solid over the years and id like to start adding values now.

FAQ:
Something's broken, what do I do?
>The site is currently in the alpha phase of development and is being built around us as we compete so sometimes things go wrong. If you ever need any help send me a tweet @LavaFlake or shoot me an email [email protected].
What do we draw?
>Whatever you want. At this point there's no required topic so draw your heart out. Make sure you submit at least a half hour of work or you may get a low effort warning.
What's a low effort warning?
>The goal is to get people to draw every day by turning it into a competition. The low effort warning system is to prevent people from posting last minute, quick sketches when they're feeling lazy. If you receive a warning and it happens again within a month you'll be eliminated.
>This rule has been the cause of a lot of concern amongst newer artists so let me reiterate: this system is to police low effort content and has nothing to do with the quality of the work. New artists are more than welcome.
What happens if I'm eliminated?
>A new Last Artist Standing challenge starts every week. If you get eliminated then get it together and rejoin next week.
How can there be a new Last Artist Standing challenge every week?
>This is a way to let new artists join in and to allow re-entry for the eliminated. Every week a new challenge is started. If you joined on week 1 and make it to week 2 then your daily submission counts for both the first and second Last Artist Standing. If you get eliminated then you're eliminated from both challenges and you'll be able to rejoin next week.
Will I have an advantage if I join later in the week?
>The winner of a Last Artist Standing will be the artist with the longest streak. If you join on day 1 and last until day 85 then you'll have a streak of 85. If there's only one person left in the challenge when you're eliminated but they joined on Day 7 then they'll need to continue on for another week. If they're eliminated before then, you win.

no one follows your shitty meme life drama
I fell for the no colors, just values meme, and for years I didn'd bother coloring anything.
Now I can't use colors for shit.
How do I learn color?
The sticky resource wasn't much help. I understand the theory and can't apply.
Look at other's people art and how they applied color, DO IT MORE, and watch some Marco Bucci https://youtu.be/nINus0lYQjo
it's really straight forward, I don't know if you're expecting some kind of special trick that's gonna make you learn color instantly.
>>2507006
Post your work. If you really do have good values then learning colour will come easier since value is the largest component of it.
I recommend just doing lots of quick colour studies. Spend maybe 20 or 30 minutes on each painting. Set up still lifes, do master copies, studies from photos etc.
When it comes to colour the order of importance goes Value>Temperature>Saturation>Hue.
http://www.huevaluechroma.com/
This site will explain all the theory you need.
Who told you no colors just values?
I've heard 'values are more important than colors' which is true, not "ignore color entirely and just do values" unless you mean people suggesting it as a tool to learn value.
You still need to actually learn colors, understand value is just a vital element of that.
While you're coloring, if it's digital, greyscale it every now and then and check your values that way. If you have a marginal understanding of value from that year you spent you can usually quite quickly find out what's off about your colors by finding what's off about their value.
I figured with all the cool ref images that are being posted in the ref threads, we might as well revive our old char design challenge threads.
Do a character design based on the ref photo. How close you wanna stick to it is up to you, stylized or realistic, whatever you want. Just no direct studies.

Direct studies?

Like the title says, let's share photoshop plugins we find useful for drawing and painting.
Coolorus - color wheel for photoshop with neat features like complementary colors, gamut lock, etc. Serious improvement over stock color picker.
Lazy Nezumi - actually not just a stabilizer. It comes with features like fixed angle lines, radial lines, perspective tools, etc. Also, stabilizer.

Those two you mentioned, as well as Carapace from the Unreal developers. It lets you draw a perspective grid over a picture and export it. Not a PS plugin, but I use it often enough.
Environment art thread? Every thread on this board seems to be about figure drawing.
Post progress/tips/crits/whatever
Seconding this thread. Mostly looking for books on the subject. There are a million books on figure drawing but I'm having trouble finding resources on environment art that aren't Alyn Crawshaw's "Watercolour landscapes for pensioners" type books.
Lookin for an enviro crit on if I should remove the caption, I have also posted in the draw thread
