What's wrong with modern artists is their selfishness, hopelessness, and banality. Imagination wise, they're sufficiently visionary, but all they think about is me me me. They create art for themselves, the meaning is only meaningful for themselves, that's their idea of what is whole. That's why their arts look so unappealing for other people. 2D animation has tricks so that the animator has an easier time animating but it also has the benefit of making things clearer to the viewer. You have to do very dynamic stuff if you want to replicate the effect in 3D.
