> More than a year of exercises
>> Assuming you do them 3 h a day every work day
> Many reviews say this books helped people get to the next level in their work
> Other reviews say it's shit book that will give you many bad habits and you won't become a master artist but a master scribbler.

I have done similar exercises and they helped a lot, BUT I did each of them a couple of times. My instructor also said that blind drawing and similar exercises are to get out of symbol drawing but to continue with them indefinitely will be a waste of time.

Has anyone worked through the schedule presented in this book?
If yes, was it worth it?

It was a recommended book in one of my drawing classes and the professor drew worse than a Byzantine era artist. So I'm pretty sure it's a meme.
>>
going through this will give you a more versatile understanding of drawing, it touches on mass drawing/linear drawing - building mass from inside out. A lot of the exercises presented helps build a natural familiarity with drawing as a whole. Supplement with bridgman, villpu or whatever else, the more the merrier - grasp as much as you can that goes in as many different directions as possible. I think a book like this helps you with naturalness, which is quite the challenge when you reach a technical proficiency, then the question becomes not execution, but how you execute, how YOU draw, what your sensibilities are, and what poetry you see around you. The more natural drawing is to you, the easier it will be to listen to yourself :-)
>>

That book offers little to no relevant and practical value.

It relies heavily on the antiquated understanding of drawing, described in a spiritually overdone fashion

And even for the already little value it offered, those can be found in other modern books described in a more practical and useful manner

being objective, is it worth the effort to become a professional?

Honestly have a backup if you are going to draw.
If you are in your teens. Study something other than art. And pursue art in your free time while you have some.
>>
>>2821320
That's not something that can be answered objectively though.

Worth is determined by whoever is doing the effort.

All in all, it's not worth it if you don't already know why you got into it in the first place.
>>
>>2821320
It's really not. You can learn lots of things in the time it takes to draw.

Hi IC, If I wanted to do stuff like concept art work or character design for a living, what kind of stuff chould I be studying? I'm looking into courses to follow cause I'm not really good at figuring out stuff myself, i learn better when someone shows me how to or explains it to me. And are there sites you can go to afterwards that look for people who specialise in these areas or have jobs for them? My parents want me to become a graphic artist, but I like being creative with character designs and stuff much more than making stuff print ready or designing posters or other stuff like that.

>>
>>2824430

I've shown stuff at conventions, and everyone there says I need to work on things like anatomy, and learn how to draw lots of stuff in general if I want to do character design, Some of my friends and teachers have suggested I take courses. So thats why I'm asking for suggestions here. My mom says I shouldn't listen to those guys, but if everyone says I need work then It must be true.

How do you train measurement? I have been doing sight size exercises and I still do the same mistakes (i draw everything slightly too big). I really want to improve in that and be able to copy perfectly what I see, what are the specific exercises for improving your measurement skill?

The first chapter of this book breaks down the process of visual measuring into a teachable process which was for me at least, drastically more helpful than right side or keys to drawing.

Unfortunately I don't even think scans of it exist. And while the rest of the book isn't bad, but doesnt have much of anything that isnt already freely available online.

So I guess I tentatively recommend it? Depends on how desperate you are how much $$ you have etc.

What is the worst advice you've ever seen when it comes to art?

For me, I saw on some CG forum some guy posting his shitty paintings. He was obviously lacking his drawing fundamentals and probably couldn't even draw a box, but one of the first replies in the thread was some guy saying that he should read James Gurney's Color and Light book and the OP and the rest of the thread all seemed to agree with him

Another is people telling other people to read Drawing with the right side of your brain

also, not saying the book is bad, but telling a guy to read a book on color and composition when he badly needs to learn the basics of the basics seems pretty shitty

I know it's his style and all but that's one hell of a stretched trunk

I'm applying for a fine art degree in the coming months, thing is I'm primarily an illustrator and I have no idea what sort of shit one would include in a fine art portfolio. I'm constantly told it's more about my conceptual work but I don't know if that means I have to start painting vaginas to be edgy. Any good examples of fine art work, or any tips on the sort of art that would be beneficial to include?
Before I get brigaded about going into debt over an art course, I live in a country where my education will be essentially free.

Give more info. "Fine Art" is a loose term and can mean sweet fuck all.

For example, going to the Repin Institute is the same as having an MFA in the States (I believe US transfers your degree into an MFA) but good luck finding anything like the Repin Institute in the States.

Link to the institution at least, then take it from there.
>>
You apply for a degree? What?
>>
I didnt apply personally but a girl from my class did so she was making a portfolio.
I think you needed to do 20 drawings.
10 of those she did faces/busts of michelangelo's work in pencil. 2 were landscapes in watercolor/oil and the rest I forgot.
Hope I helped somewhat. Try asking around and see where do people who prepare for that collage usually go to (studio/painter).

I wish he was better at composing things so they can be read clearly. The right half of this just looks like illegible noise i have no idea wtf is going on. All his big murals end up like that, it's like visual diarrhoea, though I realize each part is drawn to a really high standard.
