Stumble upon this recently. Wanted your guys opinions on it.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=viP9_1swCrY

The salt is literally flying in the comment section.
Which there is no need for it because her points in the vid are pretty valid.

>Don’t give your male character a womanly ass/hips or thighs. Guys don’t work like that.
>Don’t give your male character the “V” crotch. Guys have dicks, no vag.
>Guys have their shit outside of their bodies, not inside. So draw them with their legs a bit spread open, doesn’t have to be huge but enough for them to be comfortable. Why? Cause that’s how real guys stand and sit.

These are the points that most people got TRIGGERED over because its, in their mind, “trans-phobic” and “guys CAN TOO have girly asses.” There was also some people complaining about how “mean” she was in the video and her vid made them feel like they were “attacked” (give me a break). And much whinier comments after that as well.

As an artist myself, and everyone else here, we all must at least agree that when you are trying to construct the human body, whether female or male, you have to realize and accept that tHeRE aRE FUCKING DIFFERENCES BETWEEN A WOMAN AND A MAN. You can’t draw a man with a womanly figure, you know why, because guys are not build that way. Yes, there are some guys who do have thick asses but the majority of men have tight/small butts. The only time I seen a man who had womanly hips was king tut and the reason for it was because he was a product of incest.

I had other thoughts for this but this shit is getting too long for 4chan, but you guys get my point.

What are your thoughts on this bullshit? Curious here.

I also want to add this. Don’t let your ideologies mix with your art. If you receive negative criticism over a piece of yours that features a man with a woman’s body and you call that critic a “trans-phobic bigot” because of it. You are only setting yourself back and you’ll never improve with that god awful mindset.

>bristol paper
Pretty sure that's your problem. Uncoated paper is super absorbent. Acrylic gesso is absorbent enough that a painting would need oiling-out, and paper makes gesso look practically hydrophobic.

The sketches I did were on chipboard triple-primed with gesso. And "grounds" basically means a prep layer of primer/size/gesso/etc on top of your "support" canvas/board/etc.

I hope wall-primer anon reports back with results soon.
>>
There's a lot of paintings posted that lean more towards direct and thick paint that highlight the brush strokes a lot, so here is something to represent the layered method.
>>
>>2780576
Yeah I could tell the bristol was doing a lot of absorbing, but I wasn't sure that was responsible for the appearance of my surface.
I'll do some more practice on primed surfaces, thanks anon. I really appreciate your input.

I'm trying to learn environment painting for a personal project, but Im terrible at it.
The level of finish/polish I'm aiming for is somewhat like pic related or maybe feng's landscapes pre-rendering/photobashing. Ideally they will be really fast painting, not more than an hour.
Does anyone have resources or advice on environment painting like this?

It's all about proper design and good thumbnails/compositions.

What you would like to do if you do digital art, is to get a hack like Scott Robertson (see here at (18:00 , generally watch all)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=diMDoFkN73s

also his talk about atmospheric perspective, generally I recommend Robertson for all things design (and AFAIK he also has gnomon about environments)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ayjbpopn5EI

Also the bit around 3 minute in first video, when he talks about Modo replicators he basically says about making in 3D program an environment from mashed-up simple shapes and then paintover:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OuH3LZs9rwI

Putting it all aside:

Compostion and Thumbnails. Make a lot of abstract thumbnails with limited palette of colors or even with like 2 or 3 or hell, even with something that only varies by value. Then see what works and what doesn't.

Remember that this is a design work mostly. Like in your pic, those two goblins are crucial there to show the scale, without them this pic wouldn't work.

You need a flat brush (not a square one, a literally flat one, like this line -) that responds to angle, rudimentary understanding of color theory and zero point perspective

Thanks senapi!

Talked to some artists who think it's cheating to trace a printed out image with transfer paper/charcoal onto your surface before painting. What do you d/ic/ks think?
3 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
It doesn't matter as long as you don't call it your own work.
>>
>>2833368
That's a pretty stupid sentiment bruh. What the fuck do you think of printmaking? What the fuck do you think of photography? What the fuck do you think of found object art?

If you're replicating an image in a different medium to create a different look you're creating a novel work divorced from it's source. Of course it becomes "your own work." Nobody gives a shit about the AP photographer that took the photo that Shepard Fairey turned into the HOPE piece. Nobody gives a shit about the guys that took the photos that Warhol replicated.

Not to mention that the question wasn't really about making EXACT replicas of other people's shit, just using a transfer medium to get your image on the canvas instead of spending the additional time trying to recreate the image free hand. I use existing images all the time that are edited and altered in photoshop, printed, transferred, and painted. If you think that effort and outcome isn't *my* work you're a bit of a pretentious know-nothing dickhead.

How can I be the best possible help for the artists of /ic/?

Having drawn all my life, art is a part of me. Took numerous classes all throughout school. Lately I've been reading and studying more than ever, blazing through books and videos. I might not be the best artist but I think I've accumulated enough knowledge and mechanical know-how throughout the course of my life to be of some assistance here.

Day in and day out for the past few years I check /ic/, browsing the catalog to see what's going on with everyone. I post here and there, but I've always wanted to be more involved. Both to help others and to learn more for myself that I might not be aware of yet. If I could give the best possible critique on a regular basis, I would love to do so.

Going to bed soon. I hope to see some replies in the morning. If not, I'll do what I can on my own.

TL;DR: How can I be regularly involved with the artists on /ic/? What threads should I keep an eye on? I want to help in any way that I can. I want to be here for you. Please tell me how I can do that.

give critique where you can

what sort of answer were you expecting
>>
Hang around the recurring threads like the alternate art and beginner threads and help there because at least people in those places have relevant questions and are actually drawing and looking for advice. Most one off threads by contrast are dumbasses who'd rather waste their time shitting on other artists or bitching about how they're never gonna make it so it's not even worth bothering to "help" those people out.

Do you take that trip everyday for work or something? I wish my city had a public train system. Could save a lot of money on gas and wouldn't have to pay loans for a car.

Also just get to sit and relax and do whatever since driving long distances suck ass.

you will have a bad time. making this into a 3d form requires knowledge of form (obviously you didn't even make this) and learning a new 3d program is always a nice learning curve. its not impossible, but it will take time.

So a while ago I saw an episode of Joy of Painting featuring Ben Stahl as a guest, I"ll include the link here: https://youtu.be/MHJB0IBnuD4?list=PLkPorn_XGIUgcFbmkWsQWQFGx5_KAXCol

And in it he mentions priming so on and so forth, but he uses something called spray glaze and I was wondering what you all prime with. I paint primarily in oils and ink. The description of the product in the photo makes me think that it could be used as a primer but perhaps not by itself. What does /ic/ think?

here is the link of the product description on Blick's:

I would avoid sprays like the plague. Way overpriced for what they actually contain and create excessive fumes. Just buy the tin version of whatever it is and apply by brush.
>>
>>2831851

Krylon is garbage.
Also, I would avoid sprays for oil paintings because usually the medium is so thick it clogs the nozzle and drups onto the painting. I'll buy offbrand(treehouse was one I used for acrylics that was great) because Krylon is literally that bad.

Just do what >>2832322
said and buy a ton for oil paintings and brush them on. Just make sure you have a soft, wide brush so there are less brushstrokes, and have the correct cleaner so your brush doesn't turn into a rock.

There are other programs that allow you to set lights on a 3d model so simple as the program in the video?

I would need to study the lights and shadows on the faces. If you can advise me Anon texts, videos, tutorials on the subject would be very useful.

looks like shes packing a dick. Anatomy doesn't match the perspective, your anatomy in general needs work. She has a man face with slight feminine features. No clear light source. You're missing darks on her. The dark of the shadow means that that there should be a clear difference between your lights and shadows.. You need to work on color.
