Your comparing two different things... But your right people on here are delusional.

I've got couple of drawings I'm doing for my portfolio, first one is Kahlan Amnell from Sword of Truth, and the next one is a dwarf from tolken's universe. Give me opinions? How can I improve them, and what's good about them if anything.

Loomis' fun with pencil. I was finally able to draw a face decently with only a day of study.

Loosen up.

Also gesture/proportion > anatomy. This is something I instinctively knew, but I was in a huge art block at a point where I was drawing super stiff figures and pieces due to focusing heavily on anatomy. I'de go as far as to say most things are more important than anatomy, but that's debatable.

Don't you have to be over 18 to post here.

But I'll bite. You probably drew this guy the best you could, in a cartoony style with a large head and modern day fashion sense (except the ripped jeans.)

Learn anatomy if you really wanna learn how to draw. Not how to draw a human anatomy graph but general shapes of the human body in various of poses.

Sure, if you want a cartoony style that's fine but even then you still need to have good fundamentals - ex. the hand that's blocked by the other hand is short as fuck and tiny in width.

You have experience in drawing heads, I can tell - but the main issue is that you'll need to learn how to do it properly with view angles and perception. Otherwise, not bad for a 12 year old doodle.

>if you're not 12-16 then I should advise you to never post another drawing until you learned everything I said. Even if you're 16 that's kind of going past the point where scrappy doodles are acceptable.

I've been putting in time every so often for about a year with very little progress. I know it's my fault. But I'm concerned that I might not really love art, just the idea of getting good.

I don't know any fine artists or painters or anything. And frankly I kinda don't care to know them. This makes me feel like a huge fake only learning art for silly reasons(comics) while not fully respecting the craft.

Someone studying guitar probably has idols or knows other guitarist's names from popular bands, jazz, etc. Aspiring comedians probably have favorite comedians or movies. So doesn't it make sense that someone who wants to learn art would at least have favorite artists or appreciate fine art or exhibits in museums? Because I kinda don't.

This all leads to me feeling like a fake and questioning if I'm even learning art for the right reasons.

I do not like life drawing and I don't really respect it. I don't want to create that kinda stuff, yet I need to in order to get good. So if I don't like drawing from life that's probably a red flag right? I like the idea of creating my own comic, but drawing from life and making realist art that I hate JUST to make comics feels fake and wrong.

Is this a normal thing for people who only want to do cartoons? Or am I deluding myself pretending to like art when I simply don't?

I can handle the truth and I think this board is bluntly honest, which I would more than appreciate. I just don't wanna keep wasting my time if I'm in this for the wrong reasons.

I should add that I have done a couple life drawing classes with the nude figure. I understand why it's important.

But I just don't love how much time and devotion it takes to even remotely be OK, let alone good.

I do enjoy drawing from imagination. Cubes, shapes, quick figure sketches... that kinda stuff is kinda fun. But I know that won't help me get truly good. No idea if most people don't like life drawing or if this is even remotely normal, or if I'm really just not cut out for art. Again I'm open to all opinions. I just don't wanna keep wasting my time.
>>
>>2822964
If you love drawing enough to keep doing it as a personal choice, i think you'll be fine OP.
I don't know how long you've been drawing for exactly OP but i'll say that if you've been doing it for 1-2 years you've only begun.
Your love for your craft "matures" or changes over time as you spend more time in it and liking things that you previously didin't is natural.
>>
I'm assuming you are a hobbyist? Or maybe an aspiring comic artist.

>But I just don't love how much time and devotion it takes to even remotely be OK, let alone good.

Life drawing actually helps you get good more efficiently (when done correctly) since the reference is actually already in front of you. There is less room for mistakes, making the usage of your time more efficient = therefore smarter practice.

>learning art for the right reasons.
There is no right answer for this anon. Your reasons are just as good as any other person's. It's normal to want to do things that you enjoy doing.
For your situation though, you just have to ask yourself whether do you like the idea of getting good (I do, and I draw because of this) or do you like the art of drawing (I also do, but sometimes I just want to bury myself in a hole). Just be honest with yourself.

E.g. I love singing but that doesn't mean I will take vocal lessons or try to get a 'right reason' to do it. I enjoy it, therefore I will do it.

What does /ic/ think of the paleoart genre (if you could call it a genre)? Namely, the depiction of extinct life-forms like dinosaurs and such. I figured since a lot of us here do representative art, it'd be interesting to see how you would approach representing something that no longer exists.
pic related is a quick little drawing of a Spinosaurus I did, not really trying to get all the facts right on it.

Paleoart is fucking cool and interesting. I doubt a theropod as big as Spinosaurus was THAT fuzzy but that's the cool thing about paleoart is you can put your own spin on the creatures you're depicting. One thing I would say is the foot closest to the viewer should be turned towards the viewer ever so slightly, it looks too in lin with the other, looks like it's right behind it. Other than that I would maybe render it a bit more but good stuff! Any more you'd care to share with us?

Thanks, and yea i definitely did kinda go wild with the feathers there, and i definitely appreciate your comment on the foot because i probably wouldn't have noticed myself.

Here's a better one, a Concavenator, although the arms (or arm) are FUCKED.

I'm also working on a Ceratosaurus but that's not reached a point resembling something presentable.

So I decided to follow this meme this year, is it actually a good plan to follow though? I was thinking of swapping out Ryder's book for something a bit more constructive, like Stepehen Rogers Peck, cos I don't really give a fuck about becoming a human photocopier and Ryder's seems to be less about thinking and more about copying. Maybe getting some bammes in there too. Also is Framed Ink going to be useful to me that early on, and any other recommendations on colour books? I've already been through Color and Light, and while it had plenty of useful information, I feel like I'm still lacking severely in practical colour knowledge.

>is it actually a good plan to follow though?

It's a start. It'll take longer than one year to get good, but once you settle in the groove of doing work on a regular basis, it gets easier.

As the pic tells it, attend life drawing classes. This will be your back up in case you ever get lazy about your own practice and will spring you back.

>Ryder's book

I don't even know why that's part of the list. Attend life drawing, preferably something that isn't based on quick 5-minute poses. Ateliers tend to have longer poses (months of the same pose). They'll teach you how to do all this.

I'm not a fan of Ryder's method of blocking in either but never mind that. Otherwise it's a decent overview of the atelier life drawing and rendering system, but useless to beginners.

>human photocopier

Realism isn't about photocopying in the slightest.

>Also is Framed Ink going to be useful to me that early on

I would start with Jack Hamm's Drawing Scenery and the Arthur Dow's Notan book. Leave Framed Ink for later. Understanding tasteful and interesting composition takes longer to develop, so give it time.

What will help take you further is to practice while looking at art that resonates with you at each stage of your practice. If you're working on composition, seek out landscape and scenes that give you pause. Look at how the artist chose to do a particular thing that you're working on. Ask "why does this work in this setting?" and try to answer it by applying it yourself in a reduced form. This is how you develop the aforementioned understanding. It's trial-and-error with confidence.
>>
>>2821225
>any other recommendations on colour books

Alla Prima is a classic and Richard Schmid is a humble teacher.

Also to add to your list if you think you can manage: do either 3D modeling (hard surface and organic) or ecorche sculpture at a local school, or both.
>>
>>2821225

You can swap a couple of these books.yPersonally the framed ink booktisn't going to be useful me.

Also the last book is an art book sntdoesn't have exercice in it. You can swap that with an art book you'd enjoy and copy from it.

Apart from that all good books for your first year :) you should do a blog and put your progress ;)

>Step 1: Draw from imagination.

>Step 3: Do studies related to that shortcoming.
>Step 4: Repeat.

I'd suggest trying out Autodesk Sketchbook. It's pretty good if you just want to draw without much advanced stuff.

Comes with pretty limited brushes, go on there blog and download all the free sets and fuck around with them. Most of them are shit, but you'll find some that are pretty great.

I can recommend Krita, Paintstorm Studio and Clip Studio Paint.
For more traditional feel - Corel Painter.
