Aside from Vilppu, what are some other great sources that teaches you the fundamentals of gesture drawings. About to attend some gesture drawing classes in the next few months, and aside from studying anatomy and form, I was wondering what other books teaches you how to gesture within the time limit.

Obligatory michael hampton "Figure Drawing: Design and Invention" and proko's gesture videos suggestion.

Steve Huston does explain gesture, both theoretical and practical.

Can a powerful artfag dispense wisdom here?

After studying some proko the pictures that OP linked don't strike me as gesture drawings. They have a minimal amount of gesture to them, Rather they seem more like contour drawings.

Would I be accurate in this statement?

So I have made through dynamic sketching exercises by Peter Han. What should I do next? By that question I mean - in what order should I learn all those things like anatomy, figure drawing, values and such? I don't like Loomis that much, can you recommend me something else which is about the same stuff?

Oh dear god no.

I mean during the first stage of the thing, the forms were constructed in a non-discrete version of the cubist method on the room I was in, but thats it. The rest was just noodling.

Kind of looks like a carved Christ.

I am very new to digital art (this being my like 3rd ever attempt)
I've been drawing for years traditionally so the transition has been relatively easy.
I would just like some feedback or pointers on how to improve, negatives and positives are welcome. I am looking to get a real realistic finish, am I doing anything wrong so far?

note: I do not trace because let's be fair, it takes no skill to trace.

Whats wrong with tracing? It's only bad if you claim you made it. Tracing for studying is perfectly fine
>>
>>2404958
proportions seem to be good, and the subject is recognizable.

Looks pretty flat overall. Whatever your doing with the neck isn't reading well. I'm not sure about the marks you left in around eyes and ears... it's not so much that they're bad... but they don't fit really well with the rest of the composition.
>>
>>2405310
OP: I agree with you- but I'm just trying to improve getting proportions right so tracing would make that void

LOL at me

I found the solution after 2 minutes of googling. putting this out here for some of you who maybe also colorpick compulsively and are annoyed by alt slowing them down

super easy simple well made little tool that blocks alt key opening photoshop menu bar.

Your drawing fails to create the illusion of volume and depth and lacks any kind of appeal

Your rendering is two-dimensional and your understanding of underlying forms may very well be nil

Does anyone have experience with character design?
I have someone looking to commission me for some comic work which I'm fine with but they asked about doing character designs too. They said they want just clean b/w lineart but I don't think they're factoring in the rough sketches and revisions that goes into designing the character, I think they believe they'd describe the character and I would just draw them once and that would be that. I've never really done designs for a client before. How do I charge for this type of work, and how do I explain there's more to the process than just one drawing?
Also general creative character design thread.

I really could use some advice here, need to email them back soon.

I assume this is just some private client shlub, not a business with a bit of dosh. The reality is you'd be doing the work for cheap money, the client isn't going to understand how much work it is. You can explain to them the process and all that goes into it but however much money they have to spend on this project is independant of all that. Can't get blood from a stone and all that.

You have two options:

1. Figure out how long it'd take you to do one of these designs (best guess) and charge a flat price per character based off an estimated hourly rate. (5 hours per character, 20 bucks an hour $100 ea. For example.) Quote them the price, say it's negotiable and be willing to walk away from the project if they say no or don't have the cash.

or

2. Understand the person you're working for probably doesn't have a lot of money and treat the whole project as a learning expearence that you get paid to do. (albeit not much) You give them an overview of the process, initial sketches based off a description, they chose one, limited amount of revisions, etc. Ask them what sort of budget they're working with and try to hammer out a price. Which of course will be slave wages. You'd be doing work anyway in lieu of this for yourself (for free) so why not do paid work that nets you some experience taking direction from a client and working for someone with a set of guidelines and a deadline on the work.

The one thing I'd say is don't get involved in some crazy huge project if you aren't the type of person that can walk away and be willing to screw someone. You don't want to get trapped working on some shit job that could be costing you study time to get better and get better work. Taking shit jobs is fine if they're quick but long project can fuck you.
>>
>>2403169
I think the person has a pretty good budget to work off of, and fortunately it seems like the project is fairly small scale - they just want to put together a pitch book so they only need a few pages and from the sound of it probably want a couple of defining images of the main characters to show along with the pages. I think I'd better ask just how much of the designing I'd need to do or if they already have some established images, that way I can figure out how long it would take and price it based on that. Plus if I ask about that hopefully I'll get a better idea of how much work they're expecting me to put into it. Thanks anon, I was just about to give up on this thread.

While we're here, anyone have tips on designing interesting looking characters?

Hey guys. Im practicing drawing shit into perspective. I took this battlefield heroes image and drew some stuff out of it and drew a tank into it and tried to think what the tank on the right would look like if it was completely in the scene. The tanks feel a little weird though, like they are not quite in perspective or something. I would like to draw some soldiers into the picture next, but I'm having a hard time drawing human figures into perspective. Maybe someone could sketch some examples to help me out?

>>
>>2400675
How about you lay out a one point perspective grid before you drop in the tanks/figures/lighthouse etc. It'll help get the relative size of everything. Also don't photo-bash you fucking noob, or reference another person's artwork for that matter. Don't give up.
>>
thread is relevant to my interests, bumping
>>
>>2400675
How about you draw your own images from scratch rather than just piggybacking off someone else's ideas. You'd learn a lot more. Eventually you'll need to make your own shit from beginning to end so start now.

The artists already did the hard part of coming up with the scene and some of the compositional elements, that's stuff you need to learn to do. Go read about vanishing points and horizon lines, draw out a grid and figure out why your shit is wrong.

If people keep giving you all the answers you're not going to learn anything.
