So, I would like to learn to paint in a similar way to katsuhiro otomo from what I've heard he uses acrylic paint but I can't seem to get similar results. Is it a matter of technique or am I just using the wrong medium. Can someone point me in the right direction?

maybe. take a look at my other pieces. https://imgur.com/a/HlI8b what I'm doing with them is printing them out, and painting on spaced layers of glass in front of them. Glazing, scumbling, and forced perspective… it all combines to make a holographic painting

ITT: we try to come to a consensus on when Dave Rapoza became better than Dan Warren currently is(2016)at art.
My vote goes to this piece which was posted on December 19th 2008.
Yes it's quasi-anime fuckery; but it's reasonably rendered and Dave didn't clusterfuck his focal point into oblivion by overloading the piece with detail(something I don't think I've ever seen Dan not do).
If you disagree or would like to play along and find your own point at which Dave became better than Dan, here's the link to the thread at the page this painting was posted on.
