So I bought me a kneaded eraser for my silly little sketchbook, when I looked at it it said it can also be used for charcoal. One of my teachers uses charcoal for paintinks so.
Tl;Dr what I want: what is charcoal and how do I use it?

Go buy charcoal for drawing and try it yourself. No, really, most of these stuff is a use-it-yourself-and-see rather than explaining what does it do.

It feels really cool using them, interesting tones. However be ready for the black mess fucking everywhere in your first tries.

It's disgusting and messy don't use it

Go away and get your gay hands dirty, pussbag.

Charcoal is mostly a beginner tool. It's like having a big-ass 9000B pencil. You can sketch really quick and make fluid lines and corrections with absolute ease. You can also get a wide range of tones.

Get one if you're too retarded to use a pencil properly.

And be careful because the slightest touch will smudge the shit out of your lines.

I figure we start a thread for clients who ask artists a whole load of questions in other threads. I figure we can use this thread to help out and give advice to client both new and old that buy and pay for art pieces.

Questions like; SHOULD I BE WAITING 6 MONTHS FOR MY COMMISSION I PAID FOR or IS IT OKAY TO ASK FOR A COMMISSIONS OF MY HOT NEIGHBOR THAT LIVES NEXT DOOR TO ME THAT I HAVE A MASSIVE CRUSH ON?

So, clients ask away.

Just say yes or no depending on if you want to do that

Does /ic/ critique writing, short stories?

I need some feedback on a story before continuing with my assignment. I know this is more /lit/ territory, but I'm writing for comics, and it's a slightly different process, and I think the majority of /lit/ is a little too "high brow" to give me the sorta feedback I need.

I just want different opinions on what I could do differently, change, etc..

Here's a summary of the chapter:

http://pastebin.com/E4sbqtna

If you have any questions about the characters and such, I have a full document, but it's quite large, so just feel free to ask.

And I guess, this is a general, since it doesn't feel right to be so selfish, so if anyone else wants feedback on their stuff, if you post it, I'll gladly give it a read and an opinion.

Cheers.

probably best to stick to /lit/ until you have some images to accompany the text
>>
Could check /co/ too if you don't find bites here. They have regular webcomic, art and drawthreads.
They're pretty casual and amateur, but they're friendly and active with some good resources. At least, last I was there, which was quite a while ago.

>>2407191
Yeah, thanks.

I've posted in both /lit/'s and /co/'s critique thread, just to broaden my sample size. The more feedback the better.

Please interpret.

what happend to The Bird Book?

Hey guys! Today I've been thinking about and looking through stuff about animation. And it got me looking at how major studios in the US has basically abandoned 2D in favour of 3D (in films, at least). Now, I've heard of how 3D is cheaper and less stressful to produce, which is why major companies have moved towards it, but I think that in comparison to 3D, 2D can achieve much more beautiful animations and capture fantastical imagery more successfully. I believe there can be much more deviation in how a scene can be animated in 2D- whether it be in the style or colour or composition- which will still achieve great results than it would be in 3D. I've also noticed there is a certain cartoonish style that you have to stick with in 3D, lest it fall into the uncanny valley. (Maybe that's just because of how young the industry is though, perhaps we'll see different styles appear in the future).

So what do you guys think? Do you prefer 2D or 3D animations?

Also, please no fighting. This is not a debate on which is superior, I'm just curious about everyone's opinions.

Ofc this board would be biased towards 2D animation why make this thread, moron?
>>
2D is superior

The reason to go with 2D animation shouldn't be because it's 'better', but rather that it's what you want to do.

ITT: we help anons find brushes and other resources to practice styles

This is what I'm looking for right now. The art is by Louie Zong, a storyboarder for Cartoon Network. The style itself is very simple but I have yet to be able to replicate this brush in Sai or Photoshop with base settings. Any ideas?

I found an artist named Sean Hicks who has a similar look with his "Splatoon" brush in Sai, but I'm pretty sure it's with a downloaded texture/brush setting. Unfortunately he hasn't made it available publicly unless maybe through Patreon rewards.

I drew this on a random spur of inspiration the other day.

When I was young used to enjoy drawing but I was never that good at it and I never really practiced basics. I haven't really drawn anything in years and did this very spontaneously.

Did it turn out OK? It looks pretty decent to me and it's tempting me to start drawing more regularly.

no, it most definitely didn't turn out "ok"

its time to read some books
>>
>>2408342
for someone with no practice at any point in their life? i didn't even have an idea of what i wanted to draw i just felt like drawing some super hero thing.
>>
>>2408348
What that anon said was not wrong, it definitely isn't ok at all, it's terrible
-skewed perspective
-no textures
-terrible linework (chicken scratches)
-the 'animu' art style
-hideous anatomy
-3edgy5me character design

But if what you said is true, that you've never drawn for several years since your were young (specify age), then it's a fairly decent attempt.
