Hey /g/, what level of proficiency would you say is required to put "Knowledge of Linux" (or some other shit) on a resume? I used Xubuntu for 5-6 years and switched to Arch a couple of months ago.
I still use a GUI for browsing through directories but have always used terminal for package management and small misc. shit.
Suggestions for stuff to learn is welcome as always.

Having a basic understanding of the directory structure, being able to compile programs and resolve dependencies manually without the aid of a package manager, being able to partition and install a GNU/Linux system in the first place without the aid of a GUI, being able to perform common commands through a terminal... Am I missing anything?

Bonus points if you can configure a dual-boot.
>>
>>57168658
Thanks! Guess I just need to learn how to compile programs. Unless manually installing AUR packages count. Used to dual-boot Win7 and Xubuntu. Thanks again.
>>
I've used Arch for 6 years and I would still not try to claim that I'm a Linux pro.

it's more that large organizations, like political parties, big businesses, and governments, are really awful at security. This is true regardless of if they're American or not.

in any organization whose prime reason for being isn't IT, IT is seen as irritating and expensive overhead to be minimized and worked around. Bureaucracy gets in the way of everything. Management wants to make this security crap someone else's problem, so they buy some firewall appliance or something and just assume that that's all they need and that it'll work. Nobody likes it when IT tells them "no, you can't use your own device, because security". The biggest things you can do to improve security are shit work that nobody wants to do, like patching everything all the time. If you aren't really on top of keeping your environment simple, organized, and consistent, you fall behind on patching and never ever catch up.

We hear about this shit when it happens to us because we have a (mostly) free press. When the Chinese government or some big Russian company gets hacked, they can sweep it under the rug and it doesn't dominate news cycles in the world's biggest media market, but it happens.

OK /g/, just spent $1,400 fucking dollars on a dell T20, 32gb ram, and like 24 tb of HDD's. I'm pretty psyched about FreeNAS or something similar, and wanted to just get a feel for what I can expect. Some of the things I think are possible, but others in not sure.

PS I love you guys

NAS server wish list (aka IS IT POSSIBLE?)

1) File Storage
(be able to store massive amounts of files. Personal files, media files, etc)
1a) be able to easily load files to the NAS from local USB drives
1b) be able to easily load files to the NAS from backup DVD's, or rip DVD movies to the NAS and transcode them for local storage
1c) be able to easily load files to the NAS from the local network
1d) be able to easily load files to the NAS from far away (computer in another city, dragging and dropping files to the NAS, for example)
1e) be able to load files to the NAS directly from mobile devices, even backing up the iPhone entirely
1f) be able to access stored files from anywhere in the world, on any device, as if they were locally stored on the device itself.

2) Torrenting
2a) be able to set up transmission and have it running 24/7, with full access to it from any external ip and from any device including mobile
2b) be able to access it locally if needed on the machine itself
2c) have all DL and UL files put into directory that is accessible via the first item "file storage"

3) Virtual Machines
3a) be able to run VM's locally on the machine, with option to switch between VM's at a keystroke
3b) be able to start up a VM from an external IP
3c) be able to access the VM through an external IP and control it as though I was using it right in front of me (ignore lag or any connectivity issues)
3d) be able to allow multiple people from multiple external IP's to do the same thing, and choose whatever VM they want and use it at their will (Joe wants a mac today and Bob wants windows 7)

>FreeNAS
just put the Linux of your choice on it. Go get ZFS on Linux (either from their repos or your distro's, plenty of them have it in their "this ain't Stallman-approved" repo nowadays)

and then you don't just have a NAS you have a server with a ton of space on which you can do anything you can do with any other computer. Serve files, torrent, run VMs, SSH in from anywhere, yadda yadda yadda.
>>
I hope you got some fans
My buddy has a T20 pimped out with lots of drives and it overheated. 7 drives only drew about 70w but the little case is a problem.

Do something to assure you don't overheat.

Anyone using GPU Passthrough on loonx to play vidiya?

Is it any good?
Can you use your GPU immidiately after closing VM without rebooting?
9 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
>>57168372
Don't.

It's not worth it.

You need two GPUs to be able to use your system properly when doing passthrough.

Dual-boot or just drop linux. Since you can't even google this for yourself, I think the latter is the right choice for you.
>>
I asked if GPU is immediately available after closing VM.

Does it imply I don't know I need two GPUs?
>>
>>57168481
you can use the onboard gpu

but if you have an nvidia card, you can only do it with a quadro. they dropped support on non quadro cards to make you pay the doublecuck premium :o)

IBM Says Macs Are Up to $543 Less Expensive Than PCs Over Time

>But isn't it expensive, and doesn't it overload IT? No. IBM found that not only do PCs drive twice the amount of support calls, they're also three times more expensive. That's right, depending on the model, IBM is saving anywhere from $273 - $543 per Mac compared to a PC, over a four-year lifespan. "And this reflects the best pricing we've ever gotten from Microsoft," Previn said. Multiply that number by the 100,000+ Macs IBM expects to have deployed by the end of the year, and we're talking some serious savings.
