I'm going to use your own refutation to show you how advantageous it could actually be.

Let's say that I'm a slightly overweight male with a BMR of 2500. I just love Mountain Dew, so I have a 20 fluid ounce bottle with lunch and dinner every night. I otherwise have a generally balanced diet, and I eat 2200 calories a day.

Pre-tax: 2200+600 = 2800 = daily surplus of 300 calories = 31 pounds of weight gain per year.

Post-tax, where I decide Mountain Dew just isn't worth it because of the stupid tax so I replace those liquid calories with water: 2200 = daily deficit of 300 calories = a similar amount of weight loss per year.

I think your oversight here is how unhealthy habits can really pack on the pounds if sustained. Liquid calories are horrible for one trying to lose weight.

Lets have an informative thread of useful Tips and informations for a change.

Lat pulldowns, do not use a wide grip bar for these, use a close grip like pic related for more activation of the lats in the bottom position and dont forget to stretch out at the top, also try to slightly pull hands back while keeping elbows inwards for more activation while you pull, dont let elbows go out, always have those elbows as close to your body as possible.
Once your arm start to bend you stop, after that point you are not isolating lats.
