no, we live in an era were plenty of children are obese and have no real concept of weight loss at the same time. plenty of fat people lose weight and there's plenty of 20-30 pound overweight people who aren't obese but are slowly losing weight. but 400 pound adults are dumb yes.

Depends how you define stupid. My dad is a fat as fatass, and has a bachelors in biochem, a medical degree in neurology, a law degree, and owned and operated his own practice. He's much smarter than the average fat fuck, he's just a weak willed piece of shit

Intelligence isn't just a yes or no question there's plenty of people who can excel in one area mentally while still being dumb as fuck in another. But if you weigh 300 lbs or more then there's probably something mentally wrong with you.

If I'm being honest, my health and diet habits/compulsions are just as out-of-control and disordered as an obese person's.

I have to admit that at this point I'm not being driven by discipline and mental clarity so much as obsession and a need for security. In a lot of ways I'm just as stupid as any fat person.

Thankfully, none of this has anything to do with my education or IQ. I'm more of an emotional idiot than an intellectual one.

No, there are different levels and types of intelligence.
Lacking willpower and discipline or being lazy doesn't make you stupid, just more likely to be. You can also lack willpower in one area but find your strength in another.

There really isn't any genetic defect that can lead to this. It's possible to have lowered or heightened metabolism, but it's always up to 5% difference from a normal person, meaning, no matter what you have, you cannot create free energy out of nowhere to be stored as fat.

Let's go ahead and assume that not all fat people are stupid and let's go ahead and take out a large amount of people who are chubby or bordering outright obesity as the negatives (which still do exist) usually take years to begin to impact their daily habits.
Let's talk straight obesity and morbid obesity.
Yes on average fat people will be more likely to have a lower IQ than their lower fat concentrated peers.
It's a collective effort of multiple bodily systems beginning to show degradation.

As arteries begin to scar (from plaque) blood flow constricts and less nutrient/oxygen enriched blood circulates throughout the body, the most obvious system afflicted is the brain. Less oxygen automatically means less efficiency and more damage. While over the course of a year this might not seem like much, eventually it leads to the same symptoms of long term smokers.
First memory begins to go, second these people tend to get hot headed (literally) as the brain can not cool itself off (this is mistaken for signals of frustration or anger, making them more irrational and emotional). Third cognitive problems begin to show as the damage of the neural bridges takes its toll, and finally complex problem solving goes down the drain.
Now while this won't actually lower their baseline intelligence in itself at first, it will begin to show on broad spectrum test (where you are questioned on a multitude of different subjects and scenarios) that there is an obvious decline.
The subject begins to be viewed more from the autistic spectrum (used unironically here) as they can still be perceived as intelligent in their chosen field of interest, but lacking in all other fields.
Moving on,
The other parts of the body have the same issue of degradation. Hormone control becomes increasing unstable as the uterus/testicles, thyroid, blahblahblah also have less nutrient/oxygen enriched blood being pushed to them.

A secondary problem that arises from this hormone imbalance is the simple fact that blood takes longer to circulate.
At multiple parts of our bodies (and multiple organs) hormones and other chemicals are being constantly tested, treated, cleansed, and released back into the body.

Being slightly on the chubby side (and I do mean slightly) has actually been shown to increase intelligence a tiny bit in children due to rich nutrients always being accessible and abundant energy being at hand. However we must remember that these children yet to have any internal damage from their habits and if left to continue over time deterioration will show.

Depends HOW fat we are talking.

If the person is male for example and just has a spare tire and lovehandles, is cosmetically fat, but still has normal blood pressure and cholesterol, and is only mildly overweight on a BMI scale, and regularly lifts weight & does cardio, eats healthy stuff too - BUT simply does not control for absolute calories, so they carry about 20 pounds more fat than they need, thus blurring definition, typical "Prema-bulker" muscle-head... then this person is not necessarily stupid. They just have a big appetite and likely rationalize not needing to be ripped. They won't look "gross" naked, but rather just won't look impressive.

On the other hand if they are seriously obese, so fat they have hormonal issue, big man titties, huge muffin top, easily 50 pounds of excess fat or more... then they definitely have a mental issue causing them to binge a lot. Especially if they are physically active people. They basically pig out. The reality is they burn a LOT of calories. It's a lot of work lugging a 250-300 pound body around (assuming normal height range). Someone that big is burning 4,000 calories a day, easily, so they are eating at least that much to maintain their weight. Generally these people don't tend to get bigger, due to the amount that they are consuming matching their energy requirement to lug that big body around.

When you get to the morbidly obese... these people have very serious mental problems. All of them. These are the 300 pound + growing monstrosities. It takes a tremendous amount of calories to grow beyond this size - often combined with a sedentary lifestyle.

Seriously, try lifting for a fucking hour and doing an hour of cardio a day as a guy who weighs a lot. It's a huge effort that burns a fuck ton, and the heavier they are the more it burns. They are generally completely sedentary, and this calorie conservation assists in their corpulence. They constantly consume calories.

Let me put it this way: being fat is the direct result of eating high-calorie food without restraint for a long period of time. The reason(s) a fat person is fat can vary, but it always leads them to be unwilling or unable to change their terrible diets for very long.

Intelligence is only one part of it, but the smarter a person is, the more likely they are to fear the health problems associated with being fat, think rationally and not jump to fat logic, figure out how to successfully diet, learn about nutrition, and so on. Truly stupid people will simply eat whatever tastes good and not think past that. That is why most mentally disabled/ low-IQ people are fat, they're only thinking about what tastes good in the moment rather than what would be good for them long-term.

But there are plenty of other reasons besides lack of intelligence. Lack of willpower is an obvious one. There's also the lack of the ability to change, indifference about their health and appearance, the inability to stick to something, not dealing with delayed gratification well, not being able to see things objectively/ just believing whatever feels good, and an unwillingness to learn new things/ intellectual laziness. There are probably more traits that would cause a person to be fat, but that's a good list.

So, being intelligent tends to have a protective effect against being fat, but it's not guaranteed to prevent it. Smart people can certainly be fat if they have the right flaws. And an unintelligent person with a lot of willpower, objectivity, and drive can lose weight or stay thin.
