Well, there you go, just buy enough super glue to keep your punching bag in place.

This is pretty much how I started out, you could also look at CL and see if there are any cheap there, if you are attending a gym and they have a notice board then try putting a notice up asking if anyone has a cheap one for sale.

You could also try asking on /fit/ although I don't know much about that board or how helpful they are in general, and just in case anyone here has a cheap/free bag you might like to list where you live, you town and country.

Good luck anon.

Guten Tag /diy/

So I'm getting together the materials to do some backyard metal melting and molds.

I've got access to a lot of metals and wish to turn them into ingots, mostly for the space

Now the problem is not the different furnace designs...I've already chosen a design to make.

The problem is the walls of the inner furnace. I can't find a single furnace wall mixture that everyone can agree on. Everyone has got their own recipes but which do I choose? which one can help me forge the ring of power in the bowels of Mt. Doom?

p.s. Not actually going to forge the ring of power...

The metals I intend to melt down are
- Aluminum
- Copper
- Brass
- Silver

Don't need to go hotter than that if that helps

I have the kit from Foundry101.com, and don't regret it. The walls are a ceramic insulation fixed to a wire mesh frame. The top is steel over ceramic insulation. The bottom is refractory, with a steel pipe tuyeer. The burner runs on Propane and is easy to start.

It's expensive, but I enjoy this far more than the charcoal one I made previously out of furnace cement and perlite.
>>
How much do you want to spend?

At the lowest cost end, its hard to go past a DIY mix of perlite and waterglass (sodium silicate), as that will last quite a few dozen burns - typically you'll end up damaging it through klutzness before it gets too heat damaged and you can buy enough material for several furnaces for around $50.

Perlite from the nearest hydroponics (or even garden) store, and waterglass either purchased or home made from that crystal kitty litter and caustic soda (see youtube for videos on making it).

That'll happily withstand brass melting temperatures, however once you get to copper/iron temperatures you'll probably start to notice faster erosion of the insides. Even so, you can repair it with a waterglass/fireclay mix.

So my neighbor wants me to landscape his yard and is paying me a few thousand dollars for materials and labor...but I'm not a contractor and I don't have a license. In the state of California any project that cost more than $500 requires a contractor's license.

So I recently came across a genuine hakko 936 soldering set when I was helping clean out a lab. The controller is busted which is probably why it was hiding in a box in the closet and not being used. The iron is still good and I'm thinking of making something like pic related which is a mobile soldering station, runs off any voltage like from a car or lab power supply and even RC batteries.

When I look up 907 controller on eBay I'm given dozens of variations, does anyone have any experience with these things or recommendations? Or even any info on diy versions (I've seen some done but with little documentation)

would this all be possible with a single arduino? i know very little about them and never used one but im willing to learn how to wire and program it. basically this stemmed from wanting to electronically control the throttle of my diy generator engine (yeah im that guy from before) to keep it in the efficient rpm range when the electrical load starts to slow the engine down. i thought that since im already going through the trouble with the throttle and im going to have the other sensors anyway i might as well hook them all up to a controller and have them output to a screen rather than have 5 different gauges and displays. im thinking of using an uno r3 with 14 digital i/o pins and 6 analog input pins plus whatever sensors and controllers ill need. on the pic i included what the expected types of readings on inputs should be. the only thing i am concerned with is trying to read alternator voltage and amperage because i dont know if i will accidently fry the board or not.
I should note I'm not really looking for a how to, I just want a "yes that will work" or "no you'll need to do this to make that work" or whatever in-between.
>>
Absolute noob here. I made a small circuit on a breadboard by following a tutorial, but they didn't cover how to go from being on a breadboard to being soldered together. The board's grouped by rows, so do I just solder everything that's in the same row together? So for example, all the negative terminals are on row 16, so I'd wrap all those together and solder them, right?

thanks for getting it started anon.

my story starts in early march of this year. frustrated from years of just cruising through life, i was looking for something to do that wasnt work, that i could learn a lot from and obsess over. a project with clear progress and a clear result. a project that would involve a lot of problem solving, a lot of time, and would be something i would be thoroughly proud of.

a project car was my natural solution. now, having no car at the time, i had to find something close enough that i could bum a ride off a friend to go see the seller and sign the papers. with a quick search online into certain models of car, i found a few that i liked, and with an ebay search, i found this 1965 impala ss. but the car was a 3 hour drive away, and the circumstances forced me to make a choice.

either i would buy the car online, or wait a week (with risk the auction would close out to another buyer) to bum a ride. so, i took the first real risk of many- i bought the car online without seeing it in person first.

more to come.

I'm going to build a metal roller and I would like to take suggestions. The basic design is this, I'm considering adding another arm on the other side, but I like the idea of an open top roller. I wanna be able to roll 1"x1/4" flat bar, and 14 gauge sheet metal (on a 4" width). I belive that I can get away with not having another arm for my rolling requeriments, what do you think? I was going to simulate it on SolidWorks, but apparently you can't do it with assemblyes.

No I'm not that dude.
I'm taking the basic design from this comercial one, which takes 1 inch by 1/4 inch flat bar. Mine is more robust, the arm is half inch by 1 1/4, and the piece where it pivotes is more robust also. It's true that in my design I have 4 inch long rollers, but it shouldn't make a difference if I roll the 1/4" flat bar at the back. And with 14 gauge steel I belive I won't have that much deflection.

So /g/ is full of people who hate fun. Anyone here do any PC case mods or custom cases? What have you done or wanted to do?

Pic related is my current PC.
Modifications I've made are:
Painted the inside red
Removing the molded plastic grill to make room for a better dust filter
I swapped out the HDD LED for a brighter one, changed one with a slow color changing one, and drilled holes for 2 new ones to make a sunset lighting.
Removed the front "grill" and cut out some plastic to help with the front fan from suffocating.

I'm currently making a tiny PC that I want to paint and stencil radical edward's symbol on. Will post concept below.

First time working with wood/masonry.

I just built a pad for a wood burner out of some concrete board and some slate.

However I have just realized I do not have a whole lot of room to grout the slate.

Less than a 1/4 inch between the tiles.

Is there an effective way to grout this thing? Like a frosting bag or something?

Don't explain what, explain why.
The general rule is if you have to explain what then your assignments are to complicated and you should split them up, but if you feel like going rogue then don't worry about it, leave them complicated fuck it.
But certainly you should explain why instead of what
Don't be afraid to comment on a block instead of line by line if it makes sense.

Basically when you write software usually you come up with an algorithm, point by point what you are going to do, then you write the code based on the algorithm right? So the comment should basically just be an explanation of the algorithm, someone who doesn't understand the language (or any code!) should be able to read the comments and understand not what you are actually doing but what you are trying to achieve and how you are going about it. Think of it like explaining it to your gran or something.
>>
>>1074346
At the header and return of a function you should document exactly what variables it's getting, from where, and what it will do to them. The return specifically should re-state what it did to spit out this particular return, especially if there are different cases.

The problem with introductory programming commenting some of it really is too dumb to bother commenting, but teachers will still want it because it's so hard to find anyone that comments code properly later in their career.

Hi!

Not sure if this is the best place to ask, but I'm looking for adding color lighting to my apartment, and I have no idea what kind of equipment to use.
I've been looking for a while but there's always at least one thing missing, the only viable solution is to go through companies to that install it for you, and that's way too expensive.

Here's exactly what I'm looking to do and what my constraints are:

> I want to add an alternative lighting system in my apartment that can be switched to any color
Can take any form, I'd be fine with strips, lamps, but I'd rather not have wires go everywhere and I can *not* drill/nail into any wall. At all.

> Two rooms would be fitted, my bedroom and the bathroom
I expect this constraint would force me to at least one buy one product which is waterproof, the inside of the bathroom gets *VERY* steamy, as a matter of fact 2 of the 4 ceilings led lamps (installed by owner) died in a matter of weeks, but the whole apartment is generally quite humid.

> I'd want to change the color of the strips/bars/whatever independently (at least from one room to another, being able to have led-wise color change or gradients/the like would definitely be a plus)

> Being able to control both rooms with an android application or a webapp would be great, but it would require bluetooth/wifi so if a set of remote is significantly cheaper, I'd be okay with it.

Can I get a decent lighting (able to mostly supplement existing lighting) for a decent price? I'd rather not spend significantly more than ~100£ in total (depending on the features).

Anybody went through a similar project with similar constraints, I'd take any advice or word of caution! :)
Thanks!

Remote controlled RGB LED lamps that go into the normal lamp socket, or RGB LED strips + control and power modules.

Neither would require any drilling/nailing as you can use adhesive tape for the strips.

Just google either or both.

There was a pretty cool bulb I saw on Shark Tank. You replace all the bulbs in your house with it and download their app which controls the bulbs via bluetooth. You can do mood lighting, party lighting, synch it to music, have different settings for each room etc. It looked pretty cool.

Hmm maybe modify a "NZXT hue+"? They provide 2 channels and it's all controlled through software on your pc. The 2 channels are independent from each other.
If you could make so it can handle bigger strip lights and connect the strips to individual outlets then your set.
Curious as well.. I have a great led fetish
