Real hardware mods not those fucking cooling pads or vacuum fans!
Because they are and will always be pure and utter shit!
Also the mobility shall be secondary, as this is mostly for the rejuvenation of old/unused laptops.

Hi
I listen to radio frequencies on this webiste:
websdr.ewi.utwente.nl:8901
in particulary the range 2-7mhz
I'd like to be able to listen to it also without an internet connection, so there are two possibilities:
-buy a radio (I don't know if there are)
-build my own
.. how can I build my own?
is it worth?

Short wave receiver, look for DIY shortwave kits on the Internet. Ramsey electronics sells them.
>>1073897
This.
A cheap USB dongle can be had for around $20. GNU Radio is free.
See: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Software-defined_radio
Pic related is the high priced end of the hobby. But either way, your antenna will be the biggest factor in receiving distant or weak signals. Check out the ARRL antenna book (pdf available).
>>1073878
Get a SDR dongle with an aerial and use a program like sdr#.
Best option for on a budget.
You should get into amateur radio though mate it's great fun.
New ham here, pic related is my rig, love it.
Does using vinegar + baking soda really help in breaking up/clearing grease in a sewer line? It pretty much gets backed up every year (its not a root problem)
>>1073858
no, but using only one at a time will do
vinegar and baking soda cancel each other out...

>Does using vinegar + baking soda really help in breaking up/clearing grease in a sewer line?
The only thing I've found to be effective is a snake, if the line is already clogged. Pouring in any kind of drain cleaner is just making a bigger mess to deal with.
If it's not totally clogged yet, you can try using dishwashing soap. A lot of times that works for me.
1. You run the hot water for 2-3 minutes, or until the water begins to back up into the sink, about 1/3 full. This is to warm up the grease clog, since the soap works better when it's warm.
2. Turn the hot water down so it's flowing about the same speed as the drain is flowing.
3. Pour a quarter-bottle of dishwashing soap directly into the sink, over the drain. Use a brand that cuts grease well; I use Dawn for this. And leave the hot water running slowly.
4. Watch it for 2-3 minutes.... When the soap hits the clog you can usually see, because the water suddenly starts draining way faster than before.
I don't ever pour grease down the drain but eventually it does seem to build up now and then.
Normal drain clog removers are usually acidic, and meant for eating hair in bathroom drains. They simply don't do much on a grease clog, no matter what the labels say.

stop pouring oil down your sink
Hey I'm in the planning stages of a costume, but the costume has a metal mask I'll be casting out of either bronze or aluminium, but I wanted to put a microphone, speakers, and a push to talk button in it.
I was hoping to have a mic attached to my right ear, which would have a simple pushbutton on it to activate the microphone. I wanted to push sound through two small round speakers at the chin, and I don't mind if the speakers are a little bit tinny.
I'm wondering if anyone can point me to a place I could order parts from to keep it cheap and who would ship to Canada.
I have a lot of baritone in my voice as well, so preferably the mic would have a built in ability to not distort like a lot of mics do.
Bampin
this is all stuff you can get at the dollar store, to take apart and remake. they even had an amplified mic at one time, called a spy mic. i bought a bunch of them, and they're surprisingly good if you replace the mic with one from an old phone.
if that's too cheap, you can probably find the headset from a dead Sony or Samsung phone sitting in a drawer somewhere, or from a friend.
>>1073898
I was thinking more along the lines of individual electronic components...I want to actually build the circuit, not cannibalize existing stuff.
Creating a super radio capable of sending and receiving signals from long distances. Very long distances. Possible? Teach me, diy.
Pic unrelated.
short wave
Short save? Please elaborate?
wtf do you want it for
Anyone use software and a mic to tune their piano? i've got a tuning hammer, and i'm gonna borrow a friends laptop so i can try and use the "Entropy Piano Tuner" http://piano-tuner.org/ that creates a stretched inharmonicity tuning for you after recording all your keys. i guess the idea is that by randomizing the variation between keys, you create a piano that doesn't go out of tune as fast, as the tunings drift, they're not as distinguishable or something.
anyways, what have your results been with this?
I've used tunelab but that cost quite a bit of money.
>>1073595
Why not just get a fake piano? It feels pretty much the same and it sounds decent enough.
>>1073777
Why not get a harbor freight impact drill. It feels pretty much the same as a dewalt and it works decent enough
I'm looking for a cabinet to store my shit in and I don't have the expertise or tools to make a really nice one for inside the house and not just some makeshift one in the shed or backyard (I want something simple and rustic).
How do you figure out whether the prices you see on kijiji or craigslist is fair when there's no retail equivalent to compare to?
Pic related is CAD$385 for example
>>1073593
When did /diy/ mean shopping network?

Buy a nice used wood dresser at an estate sale or something. I have two. I paid $40 for one and $55 for the other. They are both 5 drawer highboys, similar to your picture, but 'waterfall' style. They are wood with veneers, so loads better than the new particle board and paper shit you see most places. You gotta shop around for the deal, man.
>CAD$385
I forget the Loonie to McDollars ratio but that is more than I would pay. The only reason that is selling for so much is because it is 'vintage' and it is in excellent condition. Get one that is a bit beat up, but still sound, and it will be under $100. Or troll estate sales till you find a deal. I've walked into places on the last day as they are winding down and literally offered a token sum ($10) or to haul it away for them and been told to go ahead and take it. Sometimes it's down to make a few bucks off of you or hauling it to Goodwill.
I store my shit in a toilet. And unless you are from india you should too.
Hello DIYnosaurs i need some advice on this transformer i salvaged.
how do i wire it up without frying anything?
>>1073441
here are the connection terminals
>>1073442
>>1073441
>>1073441
nice find.
use an ohmmeter and find the coil that doesnt change when turning it, that would be the primary.
the output would be the others i assume.
keep in mind that autotransformers are not isolating like normal transformers, therefore one phase of the output is common with one of the inputs.
I have a bedbug infestation, and I need something cheap and guaranteed to work. These sashays keep me awake at night and stain my bedsheets and blankets with blood-shit.
Anything that's good for spraying on walls/beds/carpets/etc. and won't harm me or my family.
>>1073280
>cheap
>guaranteed to work
>won't harm me or my family
This attitude tends to lead to prolonged suffering. Take it seriously.
And if you're renting, it's the landlord's problem, at least in some places.
>>1073280
diatomaceous earth in a squeeze bottle, mist and cover the edge and corners of the bed and all the nooks and crannies nearby
it will be dusty as fuck and everything should look white but the more coverage the better
also inspect the bed and bedsheets every day, look into the little folded areas along the elastic edges that is where they usually nest in, then nuke the area with the earth
>>1073285
Literally looked up "diatomaceous earth" and in 5 sec I learned that it's the fucking bane of all small insects. I'm going fucking Crusades on these bastards.
Hello,
recently i bought an electrical oven, it warms up nicely, however there's a huge issue with it-
the oven is incredibly loud, it's almost as loud as a washing machine. Up to this day i've always had gas ovens. Is this normal for electrical ovens to be this loud ? (it begins to be loud 20-30 seconds after I start it to work). If it is not normal, what can be damaged inside ?
Best regards,
Dynio

Did you buy it new or used? Does it have a convection fan? Bearings in the fan could be going bad. Just guesses.
and what is that ? a Microwave? How am I supposed to bake anything in a microwave?
Maybe just a home-mad satellite that I can send signals in the air. The title is a joke, but I still want to send signals with it. I have: One foot of thin copper wire from head-phones, two old intact phones I don't need anymore, one TV that can't produce light so I don't need it anymore, a pile of hangers, a pile of forks, and sheets of aluminum. Any help?
You need to read about the fcc laws about broadcasting. They limit frequency and power for hobby broadcasting.
Your best bet is a HAM radio which you need a license to operate. It's a niche group of diyers that get into it but they're OK folks.
>>1073177
What are you wanting to transmit? Hopefully nothing that would end with you getting assfucked with a huge dildo by the FCC right?
>>1073177
I haven't seen E.T. since I was a kid but I vaguely remember a record player and a circular saw blade being involved. Do you have a record player and a saw blade?
Hi, Does anyone have any DIY pictures, ect regarding suvival/Nuclear war survival/ Surviving aftermath ect? Anything you might deem relevant/Nescessary is greatly appreciated! thanks in advance.

This thing broke off the dishwasher with minor jostling. Is there any way it can be replaced without replacing the whole thing?
God, the quality on this phone is garbage. The "thing" I'm talking about is that greyish greenish thing at the top-middle of the image.
>>1073134
It's not even sort of important. Just put the soap in and close the door real fast. Problem solved.
If you use soap packets you can just put them in the bottom of the dishwasher before you start it. I have done this for years since the little hinge/door thing on mine broke. It's not worth repairing, all it does is open immediately when you close the dishwasher.
blower motor is good, resistor must be at fault, when I turn on the car it starts to spins, the blower, then stops, anyone know how to repair these resistors?
>>1073096
...do you know what a resistor is?
it's probably that fat TO247 package BJT thats fried
I need to know about circular saws. I need to cut some metal with very straight lines. I have my fathers old circular saw which specifically says not to cut metal or use abrasive blades. I see plenty of circular saws on Amazon(picture related, thinking about buying this) but they dont say if they are approved for metal cutting. There are some that say they are metal cutting but they want 400 dollars for that shit.
Whats going on here?
>>1072924
liability and or warranty
Your dads old saw is probably better than the one you are looking at.
The "metal cutting" saws have heavy duty, high torque lower RPM motors better suited for cutting metal, and they have fully enclosed stronger safety guards.
>>1072924
this >>1072930
for metal cuting you need specific metal cuting saw they designed for metal cuting like mentioned safety and motor if you are poor to buy you can rent one
What type of metal are you cutting and how thick is it?
