What glue / epoxy coul I use to make laminated blocks of paper could be worked on to make rings like these -> http://littlefly.co.uk ?

I tried regular paper glue without many hopes and indeed it failed, it has too much moisture which makes the paper wrinky, also doesnt see to reinforce the block much. There are some examples of other people online trying to replicate it, but the results are wayyyy shittier than what the guy in the link does.

Stack paper, clamp, vacuum impregnate with thermoset resin, put in oven, use block of paper/resin composite to make shit.
>>
>>1077833
This is exactly what you need to do to get those kind of results. I did a micarta knife handle out of some old jeans.

Was tempted a few years ago. Instead purchased a 2000USD NC mill with a rotary axis addon.

Still works and the water-cooled motor is powerful enough for aluminum.
>>
>>1077778
I got one of those. It's pretty shit, don't expect to mill or turn pretty much anything on it, not even palstics. However it's nice for drilling wierd parts.

Why are all these external dimmers all for regular and halogen bulbs? I need external dimmers for dimmable E27 LEDs
10 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
>>1077710
leds dont work like that, and even if an led is dimmable it will be dimmable like regular bulbs but at a lower wattage which is lower than the usual ranges these dimmers operate with
>>
>>1077714
what does that even mean? when I buy an E27 LED bulb which comes advertised as "dimmable", how am I to dim it?
>>

holy shit, are you mistaking that socket to be where you put in your light bulb? that is a mains socket you dumbass you can plug in whatever the fuck lamp you want

Tesla's latest products are glass tiles that contain solar panels. They look like normal roofing tiles from ground level, but from the sun's perspective they are transparent glass.

Idea being you use them as normal roofing tiles. Then combined with a battery pack. you power your house at night. Whole thing to cost less than a new roof plus decades of electricity.

Thank you for that verbatim regurgitation of the presentation.

When I see some concrete figures regarding cost, yield and lifetime, then I'll get excited.

didn't watch the presentations - unless they are less fiddly than regular panels to install or maintain, how are they different from regular panels except aesthetics?

Hey /diy/

So my dad was a Vietnam vet, I'm 21. He knew everything /diy/ Plumbing, painting, tiling, bricklaying, welding, mechanics, electrical work, concreting, roofing ect

I'm a little manlet who plays videogames. I'm waiting for additional testing before I can join the army myself. I'm applying to be a sapper because building interests me.

I left my girlfriend to support my mum, my older brother is doing shady shit to her, police raided us a few days ago, he's a shit person.

Our entire house is in disrepair. I'd like to get advice on learning to renovate the bathroom on my own.

What I want to do is put new tiles in, rip out the old cupboards for new ones. I'll upload on my phone shortly. And maybe give /diy/ before and after shots.

I'm thinking of going to the library tomorrow and getting some text on tiling, (She wouldn't trust me ripping her bathroom up)

Input appreciated, cheers

put linoleum or something in there

I have a godfather who worked with my dad who could help me.

I have acquired some relatively nice 5.1 Logitech speakers for free. They are Logitech G51 speakers. Old, yes, sound quality great. They were found and I acquired them. My problem is that my laptop only has one connector as shown in the picture. Is there an adapter for this that I had not found online; is there a way I can solder them together and produce surround sound from them that way that is effective? The tools I have are the basic workbench tools from screwdrivers to wrenches to pliers and solder irons and such. Any ideas to help me? Help me /diy/ you are my only hope.

No. But you can buy an external USB soundcard.
>>
>>1076994
Logitech use to have a adaptor with speakers to make them into avi plugs then i used avi to aux to work mine back in the day.

But easiest way would be to go sound card or external, youll have no chance finding the adaptor now
>>
>>1077024
I take back my words, check online for game adapter for logitech about 12$, then you just need the aux to rca plugs

I need help, id like to make a motorized potters wheel for my mums birthday, as theyre hard to come by for less than £200

Id be looking to use the motor from a ceiling fan and a pedal to speed up/down the wheel

Has anyone ever tried anything like this?

Ceiling fan motor won't have enough power.

>>1076758
Try a sewing machine, they already have foot pedals.
>>

Potter here. I've only seen a couple that I'd use outside of a joke. Not saying it can't be done, but it starts to get expensive. The only inexpensive, viable diy electric wheel motor is from a used treadmill. You need a DC motor with at least 1/3 horsepower and decent torque. If you're lucky, you can salvage the controller. Then you've gotta get a tight v-belt pulley system figured out. Anything else is not realistic on a budget and you're definitely past used professional equipment prices.

I recommend making a kick wheel with a big ass concrete flywheel. This is a very throwable, classic design and well within most people's ability to make. Too lazy to google it for you.

Is electric engineering worth it, or is it better to just be a electrician? Should I just go into a trade or is going to get a 4 year degree better?
62 posts and 4 images submitted.
>>
if we were you, we'd already know the answer to your question.

if you just barely graduated high school, then you will find lots of kindred spirits working as electricians. so, that's your only option. if you think, or know, that you can handle lots of mind-numbing calculus, then you have 2 options to choose from.
>>
Very different work man.
You wanna be designing circuits and writing code or working with your hands and installing stuff?
Both take some circuit knowledge and are perfectly respectable professions but its up to you my man.
>>
>>1075784
An electrical engineer can do everything an electrician can do plus more. Engineering has a higher ceiling. If you want to have carpal tunnel from wiring buildings by the time you're 30, go to trade school.

Picture a chair like this but 15 years old and the cushion and back worn out to shit so sitting in it is a nightmare. Anyone have a fix besides sitting on a pillow?
26 posts and 7 images submitted.
>>
find $15 and a thrift store.
>>
>>1072730
Four screws hold the arms on. Remove those and the chair is apart. Four more screws removes the base if you want to, but not necessary. Rip leather off, replace foam, staple on new fabric or leather. Done.

My chair is just like that one. An arm broke, so I bought some angle steel and 2" wide flat bar, and welded up new steel arms. Matched the shape of the original arms with the flat bar for the arm rest. Worked out nicely. I'll be redoing the seat cushion again soon. I keep this up I'll never buy another chair.

I'd like to buy land in the US and start building all kinds of crazy off-grid DIY shit.

I'm primarily looking for places that are pretty remote and with a low population density. Considered deep forests as well as deserts.

What sites are the best for finding vast tracts of cheap land (at least a couple of acres), and are there any states who aren't too strict on building permits? What's your experience in buying land and building your own stuff?

looking at picking up this lathe but I'm pretty inexperienced with lathes so I'm not sure if this would be an awful decision

it looks like I would need a new faceplate and likely need new bearings in the motors and spindle but for a 3/4 hp lathe I am really fucking tempted.

what do you think?

Negative. That is a crap lathe. The bed is a pipe. A SINGLE pipe at that. It will flex on you and the tail stock might even slip (depending on the design). You want a cast bed. Also, the motor is lying to you about its power output. It is probably somewhere around 1/2 HP, and maybe not even that. If it's inefficient, which is likely because it is Taiwanese garbage, it is probably closer to 1/3rd HP.

$200?? That fucker is out of his mind. It's worth less than half that. I'd price that turd at $75 and take best offer.
>>
>>1077774
I had a look at the lathes in your area and holy fuck. The selection is decent but the prices are insane. I thought in the south stuff was cheap. I live in California. The other side of the country where the good stuff is manufactured and my prices are half what these fucks are charging.

This lathe is decent, if overpriced: http://charleston.craigslist.org/tls/5790544263.html
It's in Charleston though, so you'll have to trek out to buy it.

This lathe is *really* overpriced ($600) but its probably the best quality one for sale around you, period: http://charlotte.craigslist.org/tls/5814952757.html
Again, it's a trek. There is an identical lathe, with more accessories, for sale where I live for $450 and it's been on the market for 2 months because it's overpriced. If it was $300 it might sell. The fact that this guy has had it on the market for a month tells me it's overpriced for your area as well. Sign up for the OWWM forums and check out their for sale area. There might be something decent in your neck of the woods.

I'm planning to do up a tankard in a steampunk style, and I'll need to paint it to get the right look. I was planning on using spray paint, but I'm not sure how safe it would be, and whether the paint would wash off in warm, soapy water. I need to paint it and seal it, but I've really got no idea where to start. I would need some kind of sealing clear coat over the top of it to make it safe to wash and drink from, but I know basically nothing about paints... What do?

no, just no, maybe only externally but even that, is a very bad idea
>>
>>1077771
YEah, it would only be externally, I was going to keep the lip and interior covered when painting it. Surely there's some type of non-toxic clear enamel sealant thing that I could just cover the finished paint job with that wouldn't wash off?

OP

here is what you want:

https://www.mcmaster.com/#8916k89/=14tpe64

braze it with some food grade braze to a plate on the bottom

fold another piece of no lead bronze

keep nickel level really low as well, there is a chance nickel is a carcinogen though there is no absolute proof yet

dont paint it

7 posts and 2 images submitted.
>>
get someone else to do it for you
>>
>>1077620
You won't be able to get a perfect circle.
>>
>>1077620
circumference = 2*pi*d

connect the ends with magic if you want a perfect circle

cut a bit longer and hookup the ends with solder, a butt splice, or a clever knot if you don't need a perfect circle
