As the title implies, my wife and I were woken up in the night to a buzzing for about 5 seconds and a pop with a flash
We looked all over the house for black up the wall or dead bulbs etc and found nothing but the GFI (looks like pic) in the bathroom smells metallic like a blown capacitor on a motherboard. Nothings plugged into it.
I pushed the reset button as it was popped out but nothing happened. I assume it's the culprit but not sure what my next steps are. I'd like my family to not die in a fire. What should I do?
>>1069463
clearly you have no experience in this matter, therefore cannot diy, so call an electrician asap to get it sorted
>>1069465
You're right I have no experience but I'd like to learn
What would an electrician say based on what I said? Replacing the GFCI? Is there something else u should be checking?
>>1069467
>what would a professional do? I can just do the same
...that is a stupid idea, to put it politely
This could very well be a stupid question, but I could very well be a stupid person. I'm working on a jewelry project in which I'm going to make a container with a lid that rotates on a pin. I was going to use some neodymium magnets for the locking mechanism, but with the gauge of metal I'm using, it would be very difficult for me to get the whole magnet in there without drilling all the way through. My plan was to drill a partial hole and stick my magnets in there with epoxy and then sand the two surfaces down completely flush.
>inb4 don't sand neodymium.
But I've never worked with magnets before and don't quite know everything so I was wondering what would happen if I were to cut or sand these magnets down past the halfway point, how would the polarity work? Is it possible that I could destroy one of the poles if I sand through it or does neodymium by nature always have a positive and negative side?
Also I meant to ask, has anyone ever worked with neodymium before? From what I've read online it seems its safe to fuck with with a simple dust mask and safety glasses.
>>1069376
Magnets are always dipolar ya wank
As far as toxicity... dont eat your magnets.
>>1069381
I figured that was a stupid question. Thanks
How the fuck do I tie my shoelaces?
>>1069216
>dont google before asking

You 'gon learn. Website also has a lot of different lacing techniques.
What could be inside?
Is it worth of opening or i just get burn by acid
since its already open, try and risk it faggot
>>1069145
i bet it is some 9v battery... or worst, some AA battery
>>1069145
It's a two cell battery containing lead and acid.
That's why they're called 'lead/acid' batteries.
I'm trying to figure out how to make my own whitening agent for regular foundation. I've tried mixing it with powder and I have rice flour on deck. I've been using the rice flour to get as close to dead white as I can until I order some legit white foundation/powder. Any tips for what I could mix to make a whitener or lightening agent?
In paint they use titanium oxide
You could make some titanium oxide and use that
Or silver chloride is very fine white, but that might be bad for the skin
There are also a bunch of white lead powders that they used traditionally
>>1069081
>There are also a bunch of white lead powders that they used traditionally
Those are toxic as fuck.
>>1069093
You asked for something you could use, not something you should use
Sup DIY brothers
I need help for a little project. I would like to use a servo tester and a hall effect throttle
I read few tutorials but doesn't work, my controller give me the "no signal" error message

post a close up
the plug on the right seems loose
Op here
I just weld the wire so not loose still not working

post a close up for inspection
post front and back
So my dog loves tackling barb wire fences when out hunting. has nicked her shoulders chest area up a few times needing stitches. looked into buying one and they seem flimsy and not really well fitted to dogs and with her unusual size (broad solders) i seriously doubt it would be able to be both rigid enough to stop the injury and not restrict her movement to the point she would just tear it off. so i have access to some tanned deer leather some scrap denim a sewing machine and basic tools. built a forge a few years ago but threw it out, as i moved into an apartment but could jury rig something. it needs to cover her chest, protect ageist barbed wire with a 90 lb dog running into it. be light and flexible enough. waterproof she wont swim in it but running threw shallow water. and cool enough it will be around 50-0° F. but a furry dog running nearly constantly. will post some pics of dog in a min from my phone.
woops wrong pic
Get her some pic related.
>>1068767
but ya see the problem is that all she needs covered is the chest shoulders area that a lot of these protective vests don't cover. and i'm kinda broke
So,
I want my bedside lamp to turn on automatically each morning, a bit before I wake up.
I used to have an alarm clock for that, it broke. And using the existing lamp is less clutter.
Considering my near zero knowledge on electronics; my question is: would installing a timer parallell to an existing switch work?
When that switch is on the electrical current would be returning to the timer, is that safe? Am I thinking right?
I'm considering to just try it, if it burns it wasn't safe...
Napkin paper pic related.
>>1068586
use one of these. do it in style.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XbNgbtZJAcU
just have the timer bridge the switch
I need to secure something down in place. Any ideas of some security screws/bolts
>>1068521
Yeah thread locker. Red.
If they can get a nut off of that. They deserve to steal what ever it is.
Any screw that suits you, fix it drill out the head and your done
>>1068527
Yep.
Just grind the head down afterwards.
I can buy a 100 piece security bit set at harbor freight for $6.
Why the engine of my fan (pic related) is so fucking hot? I already try engrase their parts, but still being so very hot that you can feel the fucking heat, is so much the heat that even can boil a little ice cube. The fan works fine, but I'm a tad worried for this fucking problem, because the plastic blades already start to melt. Help.
Have you tried using another, smaller fan to keep this one cool?
Yo dawg I heard you like fans
Is it made in china?
I'm planning to make shelves for blurays out of 1x6. How wide can I go before I gotta worry about sag? If I use small l brackets along the length mounted to a wall can i make the shelves 6ft wide?
>>1068412
>not knowing the difference between width and length
there should be zero problem with two brackets holding a 1x6x6
Here is a sagulator.

We all know it's possible to shatter a glass when exposed to a tone at the resonant frequency of the glass. Would it also be possible to shatter a glass with a higher frequency carrier (namely ultrasound) somehow modulated with the resonant frequency?
It would vary depending on the glass construction and shape.
take a metal object and and tap the glass. use a guitar tuner or something to measure the output resonance.
get your hands on a speaker that outputs in that range and a large power source.
proceed to break that specific piece of glass.
>>1068264
Possible yes, possible without it being a health hazard probably not.
>>1068286
Yes, I know that. I don't think you actually read my post.
I got this thing and have no idea what to do with it.
is it possible to be turned into a charger for my phone?
what would i need?

return it then.

charge up 1mF 450v capacitor then stick it up your ass
Bought this on a whim, thinking about making a small wooden chest for it.
Never done any woodworking before,
I'm thinking about using walnut, and using some sort of hidden joints to make it look good
but I'm afraid that such a small project might end up being too frail (chest wouldn't be bigger than 5x6cm).
>>1068012
>i am stupid and this thread is pointless
i agree
Whats that?
>>1068013
Why are you so mean?
Hello /diy/
the heating in my appartment isnt working. its extremely cold at the moment, only my thinkpad gives me warmth, and its even too cold for sleeping. i woke up multiple times this night because i was so cold.
now, is there some sort of HEATING UNIT i could build from a few candles, or am i pretty much fucked?
keep in mind my room is small, i manage to heat the bathroom with the hairdryer for shitting.
i know that with a power of about 30-40 watts a candle wont do much, but i only need the warmth in a small space (where im sitting wiht my notebook)
pic unrelated, its the only image i own
>>1067967
Just go look up candle heater on YouTube, there is a ton of video's on it there, the only advice I will give you is to be very careful with candle heaters and always think about fire safety when dealing with them.
call your landlord? buy a space heater? buy a heat lamp?
>>1067970
yes, yes i see all your points, but i want to DO IT YOURSELF myself, man
