Anyone here that would be able to provide some insight on this kooky idea I have? Want to set up multiple tanks and I'm not sure exactly how to go about it, from what I've been able to figure out from sifting through "don't do it it's too hard/what if one of your fish have a parasite, all of your fish will get parasites" aquarium forum replies is that I'd need a sump, something for overflow to go into in case of power outage and a bit of creative plumbing.
I plan to build this over the course of a month, maybe two. Would like everything to be done by January. Tank 1 is already up and running, it's a pretty simple turtle tank. I'm likely going to get tank 2 started up by the end of this month, as well as begin purchasing the filter and the media so I can at least have it cycled and have bacteria buddies hanging out in the filter for when I get it all connected.
The idea is to have the turtle tank, a safer place to raise guppy fry/have a pretty looking guppy tank and in the upper left corner possibly have a very small (2.5-5gallon) cube to add more plants and snails to the mix without having a shitload of those in every single tank.
Budget is pretty flexible, expecting to spend at least $300, but won't be surprised if I end up spending $500 on EVERYTHING (canister filter, tanks, substrate, plants and materials to get it all connected). Currently a $1/gallon sale at petco, and already have a 10g for the sump so will only need to purchase a couple more tanks, no bigger than 20g.
Only thing not noted in the picture is the portion of the bookshelf on the lower right end, I think I'll make that my area for a bucket for overflow to go to in case of emergency.
Pls bare with me on the picture, I've never drawn one of those before but I think it seems understandable.
Posting pic of the actual bookshelf in a few.
Sorry about the rotated OP pic.
10g is there as a place holder, was testing the size, had a feeling that I wouldn't be able to reasonbably fit a 20g there. Very glad I had that tank just laying around before I went out and bought one. Will do measurements to see how many gallons I could fit in that spot if I were to build a custom tank.
>>1072127
I don't see the point of plumbing these tanks together when you'll eventually have to upgrade the turtle tank to something larger than your shelf has room for.
>>1072151
Turtle's a hatchling, don't expect to have to upgrade for at least another year or two. When it's out of the 20L, I'll just fill it to the brim and suddenly I have more space for the fish! If it happens sooner than that, doesn't make a difference to me.
Hi, /diy/.
So I'm considering locations for buying some land and building a little wood cottage. Consider it an out of the way camp, not connected by any roads or anything. Just a private crashing pad.
The problem is.. I have no idea where to start looking for open lots and where.
Is there some tool that we can use to locate state owned land that we can purchase? And see where other people own deeds and property in a given state on an interactive map, like Google?
You'd think the state Ministry of Deeds would have something like that just on hand. A big ole grid of properties and who owns what, where. And moreover, whom doesn't own jack and where.
Is there a tool or resource like that online? The closest I've been able to find is just Google Maps showing the borders for each town.
Heck. Who knows? Maybe if it's financially feasible, I could scrape a bunch of land together and found a town, or something.
Wow we have about 3 threads with this question already. Use the catalog.

It is inevitable. Already I see the firing of neurons associated with such a base desire as frustration. And while you might attempt to eliminate thread duplicity, I can assure, you have become exceedingly good at creating these threads. This is already the 14th time we have made this one.

Whats up mr middle eastern extremist looking to move to the US by way of great britbong? Need an empty remote area to set up your base of operations?
About to have a storm here. This (the cylinder above the water heater) started leaking. What is it and is it easy to replace?
Shitty pic from the back side. My guess would be thats corrosion but the leak is new to me and I've been working around there lately.
Pic
It's a tank to handle the water expansion when it heats, to prevent excess pressure in your pipes.
Where's it leaking? Did it rust through, or is it leaking at a fitting?
Looks like it would simply unscrew and a new one screwed on in it's place. Use 2 wrenches to keep the torque off the pipes.
Make sure the threads are clean, and use teflon tape on the new male thread.

they say the metal pieces on both ends of the cable have to be somewhat related to the wavelength of gsm.
so how's your experience with diy gsm repeaters? does it really work that easily and cheaply?
Yes it works it's cheap and it's easy. Put some flowers on top if you can't afford the full cactus enclosure the photosynthesis helps boost the signal that's why they do it in your pic

Got my borosilicate glass today.
ABS print stuck and didn't distort and is actually pretty stuck on.
Used a little bit of glue stick, bed temp set at ~83C (IR thermometer reads ~73C off the glass).
Test print didn't look the best, but the fact that it stuck and didn't distort on the bottom layers is promising.
Thanks for the tips, anons.
What's the best way to make this stick an arrow's width without a lathe?
I have some sandpaper. Am I going to be dozens of hours working on it?

either way help please. Should I carve the wood with a knife and then when it's kind of decent start to sandpaper it? also what's the english verb for 'to sandpaper'? grind it with sandpaper maybe?

Hey DIY, I'm looking for a cheap and effective way to produce some posters at home to put up around town, there's a lot of competition for poster space so I was looking for a cheap way to adhere them to walls/power-line polls without them easily being ripped down. I was thinking of self backed adhesive paper, but they tend to be very expensive online. does anyone know of a cheap way to adhere posters so they can't be easily removed, but wouldn't be considered vandalism? preferably something that could be printed out on a consumer grade ink jet printer.
>>1072958
Google "wheat paste"
Basically just a flour and water mixture that you use as a glue. It works remarkably well, and will eventually just wash off with water.
>>1072960
I've seen a little bit of this googling around. it really works that well? also will I be able to paint over the posters with it without them bleeding? or will I have to find a different method or material to print on other than normal paper / inkjet
All posters not placed on property that you own is vandalism.
I have a bunch of standing water in my driveway and backyard. There's a few inches in the driveway but basically a small pond in my backyard and I don't know if I need a pump or what kind to get, or if this is a situation where I need to put together a proper drainage system.
What do /diy/?
Need pics. Most definitely a grading issue. As long as it isn't sloping towards your house it's cosmetic but should still get fixed.
Agreed we definitely need to see exactly what you mean to give a good opinion but regrading should help the backyard and you might need to put in something like a French drain for the driveway
>>1072929
What is the ground made of in your area? Sometimes there is a layer of limestone or whatever, several inches down, and if you can dig deep enough to puncture through it, your drainage problem will magically disappear.
I'm wondering if anyone can help me with a problem I'm having.
I know a new cooker is probably best, but I'd prefer to fix the problem until I can order a new cooker. Britbong here.
The cooker has a switch on the wall, you press this and then the cooker turns on. Simple enough right? Well..
As soon as I press the button the light flashes on and then back off, and the lever has gone down in the fuse box.
It doesn't blow any of the electronics, the lights and TV etc all stay on, the only thing it cuts off is the central heating. The problem just showed up this morning and I'm at my wits end trying to fix this, I have no knowledge and don't want to stay playing around with it because it'll end up in an even worse state.
If anyone can help me out it'd be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
>>1072844
fuse box lever, put it back on
>>1072844
I dont know britbong electrical, but are you saying the breaker trips in the circuit panel? Does it do it when the stove is unplugged? If yes then its not the stove. If no then it's probably the stove. 2 things will commonly cause this, a short to ground somewhere that causes enough amps to be drawn that it trips the breaker, or something is damaged and creating too much resistance to operate, which will also draw enough amps to trip the breaker.
Does it only trip when you attempt to turn on a heating element(assuming your stove is not gas)? Or does pressing that switch on the wall automatically turn on the heating element? Im not sure of its purpose since im an amercunt and we dont have that.
>>1072844
sounds to me like the 'cooker' and the central heat are on the same circuit and if both are on they overload that circuit which then trips the breaker.
>>1072847
yeah that will reset the breaker but doesn't 'fix' the problem.
or problem could be with the switch or something inside the cooker that now has a short which will cause circuit to trip.
if you reset the breaker and try again does it immediately trip again? if so there is a short or something wrong with the circuit and/or cooker electrics. if you don't know anything about electrics you are not likely going to be able to fix it yourself.
Hi everyone, my dad is working on building his own pneumatic pop-up animatronic ghost decoration for Halloween and he's interested in ways that he could make a sound play at the same time that the ghost pops up from behind a styrofoam tombstone.
I'm not sure where to even start regarding this stuff, especially since the sound in question would probably be an mp3 or wav file, altho I'm sure he'd know how to rig it to activate in response to the ghost going off.
Does anyone here have any recommendations or ideas for a device that can be used to play a specific, single sound set by the user? Something cheap I assume since it wouldn't do much else. Thanks in advance.
An old smartphone
Why not use a mechanical device that emits a scary sound? It sounds more genuine and uncanny than a mp3 file.
You might do something with a shaped tube and a pneumatic exhaust, or some springs actuated by the same pneumatic piston.
>>1072815
Actually this would work well if he could change the sounds when the phone gets plugged and unplugged. Change the sound for the phone no longer charging to the scary sound, change the sound of the phone starting to charge to nothing/silence. Whenever the ghost pops up it breaks the circuit that delivers power to the phone.
>Tl;dr: gas mask advice for screen printing.
So I work in screen printing and I clean the screens most of the time and the chems my boss makes us use are super cheap and kill my lungs. I use Dhaze and ER80 and I just hate getting a lungful of it when I'm trying to stay productive.
I brought a moldex 8000 with me and it seems to help a little, but I was wondering if I need to up my game and get a better one or just keep the one I'm using.
I use a GP-5 (cheap as fug, shitty visibility), if it can handle NBC it should he able to handle paint.
I guess
needless to say I don't paint a lot.
>>1072800
I don't know about Dhaze, but if you're undergoing prolonged exposure to ER/80 you should be using an independent air supply. Have you even read the SDS?
>>1072813
Boss is a cheapo and honestly doesn't even care so I'm kinda on my own :/
Hello /diy/, this is my first post and I'm in need of assistance!
I am unsure as to how I am going to power my portable speaker set and am in need for a battery that can provide power for a small amp. Problem being, it needs to have a power socket and needs to be rechargeable. Or at least, have some sort of adapter than can allow said power cord to connect to the battery and thus provide power. Any cheap suggestions?
>Shitty MS Paint Pic related
Problem with most battery-packs is that they come without the correct output cable or charger. Any solutions? Not really wanting to spend more than $30-50 on the whole thing.
your question doesnt make sense. the pic shows a portable speaker: it contains a battery, an amplifier, and a speaker.
your ''portable'' speaker has a fucking power cord, which means its only portable as far as your extension cord.
if you wanna make it portable, one way is to muck with the insides, and find a point where you can inject, say, 5V from a power bank. this is not for noobs.
for noobs, then, you need a power inverter that generates 120 or 240V ac from a 12V battery. and you need a battery, like a gel cell used in alarm systems.
buying a real portable speaker is way cheaper than the batt + inverter combo.
>>1072746
I figured this was going to be a gibber project than what I thought. But thanks for the advice anyways. I myself don't really take kindly to already manufactured portable speakers because of the quality and/or life of them. But I might as well try it out. Again, thanks.
>>1072748
How I wrote gibber instead of bigger, I don't know. Don't quote me on that.
hey i live in an area filled with many Victorian house's. and most of the remodeling was from long ago. i still have the milk delivery door on mine and quite a good portion in my area of the city does too.
this is my thermostat... it has two settings, full blast and off. how can i fix this even to a slightly working order ?
my heater
>>1072726
Just buy a new one?
>>1072726
>it has two settings, full blast and off
That's how your heater works. T'stat calls for heat and the heater turns on. To eliminate the 'full blast' effect, you are going to have to install a heater that comes on in stages.
