Does anyone have this "how to find/track a person online".jpg? Also a general DIY instructions thread.
I'm trying to find the cousin of my friend. He kinda went missing 3 years ago.
What is the greatest horsepower electric motor I can get that will run on 110 volts AC at 15 amps? How about 20 amps?
I don't mean 'peak' HP (aka marketing HP), in which case I would use the '6 horsepower' motor in my vacuum cleaner and call it a day. I also don't mean theoretical HP. I mean legit horsepower that I can buy on the market today. I need a ~1750 RPM motor for a drill press I'm rebuilding and most of the crap I'm seeing when I google stuff is clearly lying about their horsepower output.

>What is the greatest horsepower electric motor I can get that will run on 110 volts AC at 15 amps?
That would be watts, which is volts x amps.
How about 20 amps?
That would be watts, which is volts x amps also.
The bigger e-bike motors go up to 2000 watts or so and are easy to work with. Plus they come with a variable-speed throttle, so you will have a motor that is variable-speed all by itself.
Pic related. This motor is $430 and a controller is about $75. I dunno what a power supply would cost, but they're on there too.
This company is especially good because they have a slogan:
"something not to do now - it will never be done.... forever"
>>1074410
just how big is your drill press?
HSS bits under an inch will snap off or untwist if you run 'em hard enough to stall a 3hp motor.
>>1074410
well, the average 120 socket is 15 amps, so 1800 watts. 1 horsepower is equal to 745.7 watts, and 1800/745.7 is 2.413839345581333. accounting for inefficiencies and losses which according to google is usually about 25%, you can generate approximately 1.810379509186 horsepower from a standard us wall socket at the motor.
long story short, if you want real power youll have to go 240v where you can go in excess of 10000 watts

Just a fast one here.
I am looking for the best sources online (books/sites/videos) that teach the fundamentals of woodworking. I want to build some furniture pieces for my house within the next year or so, and would like to start learning now.

Hey I need to find a way to log or record everytime my laundry machine and dryer are used. Are there any ways to know exactly the date, time it was used and how long it was used for. Energy usage would also be a great plus !
How can I do this?
What type of plugs are on them? They make sensors that detect how much electricity has been used. And then log it back to an IOT hub. They are about $40.
>>1074179
Plugs? What are the sensors calls? Can I buy them online?
Any electricians here who can help?
I'm planning out my first bench power supply, just ordered all the parts I think I'm gonna need for this first try at it. If you have any features you would like to suggest I add, or just wanna post your own power supplies you made, please do so
Here's some rough specs for my own design
>LM317, LM337 dual supply (1.5A max on each)
>about -20 to +20 VDC
>2 ten turn pots, 5k
>2 panel mount voltage and current meters (one for above and below ground)
>No current limiting (may change my mind, just don't want the extra pots and hassle)
>one 40mmx40mm 12V fan, controlled by ATtiny45 and thermistors (so I'll have a 7805 and 7812 inside to power each)
>3 banana plugs of course
>BNC output, since I have a BNC to alligator clip adapter
I may make a plywood enclosure or 3D print one at school, though the dimensions would be limited. Dimensions I'll have to think about
was also thinking about adding a 555 1Hz output just for kicks, though I think I'll save that for when I build a function gen.
Oh, and no short circuit protection. The circuitry on that is a hassle too. The LM317 and LM337 can handle have the output shorted for a little while as long as the Vin - Vout is less than 40V. So I guess I would only need some sort of protection between -V and +V
And I will be protyping on veroboard
you can use the 2-diode trick to make sure the output goes to 0V instead of 1.2V minimum. also, ten-turn pots are a pain in the ass. i'd go for the more traditional 2-series pots, for coarse and fine adjustment.
>>1073907
yup, definitely gonna go with this schematic. nice
I think the pots are just a personal taste, I much prefer the ten turn pot
Guys how do I wire this board to 4 18650 cells to power a hand drill? I don't get what those VL,VM,VH are for.
>>1073351
Small education in basic googling :
USE IMAGE SEARCH.
The pic was the 4th pic for 4S-30A.
You better be sure your cells are genuine high discharge rate 18650's, or they will explode.
PS. just in case you don't know, the two parallel line symbols in there are symbols for voltage sources. In this case your batteries, the side with the longer line is the positive.
>>1073385
Thanks and no these are cells I recovered from a laptop battery. I bought this board to not connect them directly to the drill so I'll be using these yeah.
>>1073414
How many cells in the laptop?
If you had 8 you could simply use 4S2P with that some protection board.
Best way to put up flags in your room?
pic related.
>>1071975
1) take flag
2) shove up ass
>>1071977
=/
I'm serious, I now this is a dumb image but I like the idea of flags.
>>1071975
dig holes in the floor
dig holes in the ground below foundation
put in metal poles tall enough to reach your room from the ground
weld in rings for the cords for raising the flag
acquire flags
hang them on the poles
put a fan next to it
stand under it
sing the national anthem
open the door for the neighbour
get killed
become ghost
haunt the place and make the flag wave extra hard
done
Removed a beam (been supporting something no longer needed), now I have a gap in the wall - whoever installed it, just cut the stucco (and partially the studs). Need to restore the wall now, but I'm puzzled with the material under the stucco (pic related). It looks and feels just like a soundboard, falls apart if pressed with just fingers, but its black.
What kind of material is this? If this helps, this part of the wall is about 8" above a single garage door, southern exposure.
And another angle for context.

That might be asbestos and depending on how much you handled it you may have exposed yourself to substatintial amounts of asbestos that can cause lung cancer years down the line and made the surrounding area dangerous.
That's definitely asbestos. I kinda hope this is a troll post.
I just bought nichrome wire and magnet wire online, what should i use it for when it comes in
Shouldn't you have figured this out /before/ you bought the fucking things?
>>1071150
There is nothing specifically magnetic about enamel coated wire which is why normal people call it enamel coated or simply enameled wire.
People who say magnet wire are the same type of people who say ampacity instead of current (but don't say ohmage or farenheightage or milesperhourability.)
>>1071150
Nothing special with magnet wire, maybe some home made motor. But you can make a bag sealer with the nichrome, or an electric detonator, or a bottle cutter, etc.
What has /diy/ done with these little shits?
semen cake mold
use them as small watercolour palettes for travel purposes for the most part
Sometimes I put things in them, but mostly I make stacks of them on my desk and bookshelf.
Hello
I need some held with setting up lights on my driveway similar to the picture
The driveway is about 20m long and there are LED lights on one side along the way.
I want to set the lights so that they are turned on by motion.
On the house side of the driveway I plan to use a simple IR motion sensor, which is not a problem.
I have problem with the road side of the drive way. On the road side of the driveway I want to use a photocell or beam switch. (Sorry but I don't know the correct term, it is like a safety switch that you use on a sliding doors normally)
I want to se this kind of switch so lights are nor activated by every car , or cat that passes by.
I think in addition to switch I need a time delay relay that I put after the beam switch, but I'm not sure.
Anyone has any experience with this setup?
How do I connect this beam switch with IR motion sensor on a house side of the driveway?
Maybe a link to a parts that I need? (ebay, gearbest,.. is ok)
I'm in central EU if that matters.
Sorry for typos (help use, not,..)
sounds like you want a photo beam sensor as used by garage doors, like these: https://www.aliexpress.com/w/wholesale-photo-beam-sensor.html
as for wiring it to your PIR, we'd lot a lot more information, like schematics of the setup.

>>So, uh what if you attach a phone with the speaker power wires instead rigged to a small motor. then like uh, used the motor to close an electrical switch. Then like, totse use that switch to like turn on one of those dollar store electrical lighters, so you can totally light fireworks. Like I mean turn off the call sound for everything except one number, and like call that phone from, china or something?

I'm going to strip the paint off a guitar down to wood.
What's the best way to give a natural, non-gloss, finish to the wood?
Tru-oil?
Clear satin lacquer.
>>1075749
Tung oil on guitars is great.
Also be aware that a lot of cheap guitars look really awful when stripped
>>1075758
This.
I've used BLO in the past and got a nice result, but you must realise that an oil finish will almost no knock protection, however the sustain I got with an oil finish was amazing!
Hey /diy/
I might be moving to Australia in the nearish/mid future and I will have a way of shipping lots of heavy stuff for free like my amps in pic related.
My question is, is it likely possible or approachable to consider rewiring the transformers in the amps to run on 220V instead of their native 110V? Someone was telling me that depending on how the trans. is designed it might not be that hard.
I know I could probably get some of this stuff in Australia but it would be hard to find and really expensive and I won't have a lot of money to bring with me. Also the Audiocontrol stuff is zero chance of finding in Australia.
The main units I'm thinking about are the two NAD amps, if it helps there are a 7175PE Power Envelope (top with the radio station displaying) and a 2155 (bottom with the blank face).
>>1075698
You can buy transformers that convert 11vac to 240vac. AUS industry use them a lot if they buy overseas from the US.
They are external step up transformer units, so I would try to find replacements for the internal transformers on your equipment first though.
Jaycar Electronics - www.jaycar.com.au - is the go to place in Australia for the sort of transformers you need, but check on the back of the equipment as it may already have a switchable transformer already built in.
The type shown in the pic above is an isolated stepdown transformer and will cost you between $119 and $419 (AUD) at Jaycar depending on how many watts you need.
You might find better priced transformers here - http://www.tortech.com.au/step-down-transformer-australia/isolated-step-down-transformer
>>1075698
You're probably looking at around AUD300~ or so for a step down transformer for each one.
It'd be better to sell them and buy comparable equipment when you get there.
I have 10 laser pens of the same type(cheap Chinese ones) in aluminum and the threads are a bit loose, is there any way to improve the friction for the threads by applying some friction grease/paste? its for adjusting the focus of the lens so right now there is a slight wiggling room that i would like to get rid of.
I would use Teflon tape
>>1075577
One turn of Teflon tape might do the trick.
>>1075581
>I would use Teflon tape
Also being aluminum you could out of round the body to make the threads grab a little better. I would stick with the tape.
If you swap the live/neutral connectors on an AC motor will it run backwards or won't it make any difference because it's AC?
>>1075432
Since im first and dumb i will say it depends.
Some will, some wont, some fry.
Research or post motor numbers and manufacturer and shit and someone here can help. Gl.
No difference.
>>1075432
No difference since current will still flow in both directions. But it may be a safety issue.
