Are there any health benefits to going vegan as opposed to just eating meat in moderation and eating alot of vegatables?
>>8355160
To get the same effect on high cholesterol you'd have to go to meat and dairy in very strict moderation. Beyond that just the benefits of a diet more likely to be high in fiber and low in saturated fat.
No. Vegans being healthier is pretty much mistaking correlation for causation. The only reason vegans seem healthier is because people who choose to go vegan are usually already health conscious to begin with.
>>8355160
It tends to turn people into really arrogant and smug douches.
>>8355184
Basically this.
Not that there aren't vegans with pretty unhealthy diets.
I don't know the exact veracity of this but supposedly a lot of vegans eat way too much soy (beans, tofu, cheese, all kinds of substitutes), which in men can cause gyno.
Again, just hearsay, but if I ate a lot of soy I would probably do a lot of research on it.
share tips so we don't starve to death
>supermarket has 50% discount on ravioli and sauce
>bought enough for 1 portion a day for almost two weeks
>1 meal a day along coffee
it was only $2 for 1 portion ravioli and 1 portion sauce
Also bought a 2nd hand electric crockpot
>buy cheap discount meat that's almost past expiration
>buy baby carrots
>onions
>potatoes
>chicken broth
>celery
Gives me a whole lot of food that easily lasts 5 days. Keep it in a pan in the fridge, every day reheat a bit in a small pan, eat it with rice, made in my electric rice cooker.
>work in a restaurant
>literally everyday is an all you can eat buffet
>tfw my fridge been empty for 6 months now
>tfw i get paid to eat
>>8354839
In my darkest days I was making meals at around 70c Canadian per meal.
>Bulk rice
>bulk beans
>cases of noodles
>1-2 meals a day
For about 6 months.
>>8354861
OP here. I must say I'm not starving, but I have lost all the tiny bit of muscles I had. I have the wrists of a little girls now.
>Bought cilantro and made pico de gallo for the first time today because I live a very sheltered life
>Hmm /ck/ told me it tastes like soap to a small portion of the population
>Try some as I'm chopping
>It tastes exactly like soap
>Ask Mom to try some
>She also says it tastes like soap
I mean after you add the tomatoes, onion, spices, and lime juice it's bearable but I feel like I've just been diagnosed with Type II diabetes. Damn it all..
>>8354779
People say it tastes like soap like it's a bad thing? I mean oregano tastes like christmas trees but people still enjoy it.
The key is to not use very much. cilantro is very easy to overdo.
>>8354795
Uh, no. Assuming you aren't one of these genetically inferior soap-tasting fags, coriander can't be overdone. I can eat plain coriander leaves and enjoy the taste, it's refreshing (not that I do it often).
Hey /ck/, I have several cups of home-made chicken stock, and I'm wondering what kind of soup I want to make. I don't want chicken soup, i want something less traditional. Something nice and hearty for these cold winter days.
toss it and make some miso instead
>>8354377
How do?
>>8354384
aquire miso paste
it will do you good my dude
Are there any good cooking shows on Netflix that isn't retarded reality TV or some cooking contest show where you get random stupid ingredients?
>>8354111
chefs table
>>8354130
Actually a nice show, but those chefs sure come of pretentious at times.
>>8354156
Yeah, I tried to watch it and couldn't fucking get past the pretentiousness
Cook with James is one of the best cooking shows I've seen....think its only on hulu though
It's that time of year again. Cold as fuck outside, cold as fuck inside, and you are hungry. Nothing beats some good ol hot soup. Share your soup recipes for fellow anons trying to survive the winter chill and eat decently during the holiday work rush.
I sometimes make sweet & sour soup. sorry for the lack of specific amounts of ingredients, you kinda have to just eyeball it and go by taste.
>put a quart or two of chicken or turkey stock/broth in pot
>add frozen stir fry vegetables and/or fresh chopped vegetables, depending on how lazy you are
>add seasonings
>ground or grated ginger
>red pepper flakes
>salt or maybe soy sauce
>dollop of honey
>lemon juice to taste
>couple big spoons of apricot jam
>could also add a bit of pineapple juice
>the point is to get a nice mixture of sweet, sour, salty, and spicy
>dice up chicken or turkey, or brown up some ground turkey
>add to soup
>as soon as soup is boiling, add some soup-appropriate noodles
>serve when noodles are done (I don't like super snappy vegetables in soup, I like them a little softer, this seems to get them done enough without being mushy)
sounds weird I guess, but I like it

How often do you use turmeric, and for what?
I think its great for giving some color, but taste wise.. not so much.
>>8353475
it has an odd taste, which takes some getting used to. Kind of a spicy earthy flavor. Great for curries
I like golden milk as an alternative to hot chocolate
Make turmeric paste by cooking turmeric in water until the desired thickness/aroma is achieved. You can store this for months in the fridge
Add to milk and simmer until homogeneous
Remove from heat and add a splash of sesame oil
Underrated imo
>>8353475
I use it like Chef John uses Cayenne. It's the closest thing I have to a secret ingredient.
so these guys came to my door today offering me some steaks and other shit to buy. has anyone else ever dealt with these guys? please share your experiences
>>8353189
They're totally worth it. Make sure you tip the salesman
In the thumbnail I thought this said 'Obama Steak'.
>>8353189
First off, their shit is complete and utter garbage
Second off, the yelp reviews are hilariously sad:

I lived in the south a couple years back, and my office mates used to brew this southern coffee blend (their words) that had chicory in it. I miss that coffee. A little research yielded a few brands that make it, but are any of them it? I may never know. But I'm looking for a coffee w/ chicory that's good but not absurdly expensive. And please no Keurig either.
Can anyone recommend a chicory coffee? Med / mild roast preferred.
>>8352838
My mother is from Holland and when she made what she called 'proper coffee' she always added chicory powder to it. It really makes a difference.
>>8352838
It makes the coffee taste awful and leaves an oily layer in your mug. I wouldn't bother with it. It's not good by itself either
>>8352838
Maybe they had some good old British Camp Coffee?
So I bought one of these about 12 months ago and it has been really good so far..... but I have noticed it is significantly less sharper than it used to be.
Is there any good way to sharpen this knife without having to learn the art of using a sharpening stone correctly? I have seen some other sharpening tools but they all look a little sketchy.
Also knife general I guess.
>>8352769
Crock sticks
>>8352782
Had never heard of crock sticks before. Just checked out a vid on the Lansky ones, are they good or can you get generic ones that are just as good? I'm assuming the quality of the abrasive rods make a big difference.
>>8352769
Learning how to properly sharpen your own knives will benefit you in the long run. As with everything in life, doing something half-assed will generate half-assed results. A decent sharpening stone is $10.00 on Amazon, and will last a lifetime, and there are hundreds of videos on YT on how to properly use a sharpening stone.
Alright, /ck/ what is the best Christmas sweet in USA I must try? And does pic related taste like shit?
>>8352457
They're fucking delicious.
>>8352457
>Alright, /ck/ what is the best Christmas sweet in USA I must try?
None of them are must-have really. Best I can think of is a good homemade pie by someone's grandma that still knows how to actually cook.
>>Does pic related taste like shit?
No, but they're pretty bad. Imagine old grainy-textured (but not "crunchy") peanut butter that's been left out too long coated with the cheapest quality "chocolate" that money can buy. The idea of chocolate + PB isn't bad. The execution is.
>>8353121
>they're pretty bad
Are they really? I think they're pretty good, they're not really that dry or mealy in my opinion.
Sure, the chocolate isn't the best I've ever had, but it's by no means bad.
What is your favorite frozen pizza?
What is your preferred pizza delivery joint out of Dominos, Pizza Hut, and Papa Johns?
And finally what toppings do you like?
>Pizza general
Home Run Inn. Gets old after one night of eating the whole pie, but that goes for any frozen pizza really.
Lou Malnattis in Chicago, or this great NYC pizza place also in the city called Luigi's
Sausage (bits), mushrooms, garlic, or onion, with a little bit of parmesan
Jack's pizza base.
Leftover Jack's with a mug vodka.
Black olives, anchovies, fresh tomato slices.
Tombstone
Papa John's
pepperoni, black olives, jalapeños
>that guy who always asks for a to-go box since he never finishes his food
>that guy who shitposts on a low traffic board because he dropped out of college and has done nothing with his life in five years
There's literally nothing wrong with taking home leftovers. I do that probably 9/10 times I eat out, and most places make it almost a necessity if you order a full meal unless your fucking obese.
You're right, OP. Shame on someone for not being able to finish portions big enough for 2-3+ people.
Appetizers, Hors d'oeuvre, Starters...
I don't care what you call them!
Post your favorites!!!

It depends.
