Hi /diy/!

I was building an arduino based, computer controlled robot arm back in 2016(mostly in February) similar to the one in the picture, but I lost interest when I realized that I have no idea what can/will I do with it.

What can I do with it?

my bad ideas:
-board games(implemented a few simple games with AI, but I lost interest since I can't win against an AI)
-Kitchen appliance like chopping carrot(not fast enough)
-buddy for my cat when I am not alone, pet him and stuff, but the cat is afraid of it

Yeah, I thought about that too, but the board rules said no sex toys.
Also I am afraid that it would crush my dick

We are Remodeling one of our rooms
We just repaired a bunch of damage to the walls and painted, we are about to do some vinyl flooring
This stuff: http://www.homedepot.com/p/TrafficMASTER-6-in-x-36-in-Mellow-Wood-Vinyl-Plank-Flooring-24-sq-ft-case-6062511/100595230

Anyways
in the instructions it says to space the flooring 1/4" away from the wall for expansion/shrinking because the flooring doesn't actually adhere to the floor.
My drywall has a gap under it so I am wondering if I should just install it flush with the drywall since it is more than 1/4" from the actual edge in the room
any suggestions?
The molding I want to use is pretty thin and my concern is it will stick out if it shrinks and i have it spaced 1/4" from the actual dry wall

>>
As long as floor can move it doesn't matter. If moulding is 1/2" or smaller, well, better run floor under drywall
>>
>>1107683
is there a good way to space it that way?
I bought small tombstone spacers and I don't think id be able to get them back out from under the dry wall after the floor is in.
>>
You can drill small holes along edge of your first row and drive small nails or screws, at least 2 in each piece, so floor doesn't move while putting together. Dont forget to remove nails/screws when done. Moulding will cover holes.

Hey, not sure if this is the right board for this but maybe someone out there knows.

Basically I bought the hat in the picture. Looks great here, perfect color, except IRL it's much, much lighter. A very light brown, actually, which is great and all if all my other leather products (jacket, boots) weren't dark brown.

Question is, how can I intentionally darken the hat? It is a top-grain leather, very smooth on the top. Either suede or nubuck. Any help is appreciated.

Found this - they say shoe polish works if you use a creme polish and follow up with wax polish but the method is intended for boots so I don't know if it would suit your needs.

So I'm making prison wine.
I took a 2 liter of Cranberry juice, took 3 cups out, added in 3 cups sugar, and 20mg yeast. Put a balloon on top with need holes all about it.
Last night I was having to burp it about once every 3 hours. Now I'm having to burp it about every 15 minutes and it was VERY pressure filled this morning.
Is this normal? What should I do? I have to go to work and I can't burp it this regularly.

I made a chair. I had some 2x2's left over from some stairs I built an I made a "Kentucky Folding Chair". In the instructions they used wore but I used threaded rod. It won't fold up like the plans called for but it's rock solid. I'm going to coat it with some outdoor urethane or something like that. I never made furniture before and now I want to make a small table to go with it.

One of the first things you should invest in is some ceramic cable elevators to separate your cables from harmful surface coupling. These should be placed every foot along a cable and cost only $20 each, a real bargain for anyone who even remotely cares about sound quality.

I gave a long gash/scratch on my laminate floor any suggestions on what filler to buy an if it's hard to fix? Living in Sweden but ordering shit abroad I fine.

It's usually a remove/replace for laminate floor, however if its not too deep, more of a surface scratch you could try a colored marker...
>>
I don't think the tiles are available anymore, however I've seen companies that sell fillers for laminate floors. Otherwise I would have to rip up all tiles in the apartment since they're all linked.
>>
fill with laminate filler or Bondo and touch up paint to match.

What's the trick to attaining very high temperatures with a furnace?
I'm curious as to whether I can make a wood-fired oven capable of either cooking pizzas or melting metal.
56 posts and 7 images submitted.
>>
>>1106120
Two very different functions. An oven for cooking, you want to be fairly large to accommodate whatever you want to cook, and also large to give a more even heating temperature across your food so you don't get burned areas and undercooked areas in the same piece of food.

For a forge, you want as small an area as feasible compared to what you want to heat up or melt, and get it as hot as you possibly can in that small area regardless of how hot the rest of the forge gets.

Also, while you can cook just fine with wood, wood itself is not a great substitute for charcoal in a forge. The refining process of turning the wood into charcoal makes it a much better fuel for reaching the highest temperatures you can get to. Luckily if you're a poorfag, you can turn wood into charcoal yourself. There are a bunch of ways, the easiest being to just shove as much wood into a metal can as you can fit and throw the whole thing into a fire.

What about an oven of this shape, with the cooking/smelting area in red and the air intake in blue?
>>
>>1106124
A proper wood-fired pizza is hot enough to melt zinc. You are correct though. A pizza oven at 800F that has a lot of zinc chucked in will instantly go down in temps and stay down as it tries to heat up the zinc. That length of time may be too long and the masonry's stored heat will peter out before the metal is melted. Thus, an actual furnace is needed, because a pizza oven use residual heat to cook, not applied heat.

Hi guys, quick question, my granmother lives in a house with what I assume is a septic tank (since the smell is fucking horrid).
The problem is sometimes the water manages to get out, she has given me a tube of silicone to seal it, but I guess that's not the appropiate way to deal with this.
There are big chunks of who knows what floating in there, and I thought it would be better to pour them into a bucket before scraping the shit out of it with a wire brush and sealing it.
The thing is around 1 ft deep.
Any ideas.

TL;DR: how do I fix this septic tank/hole that keeps overflowing?
70 posts and 16 images submitted.
>>
>>1105333
Unless the second step to your ingenious plan is to stop using anything that puts water into the septic tank forever then it is not going to work.

What you are experiencing is a symptom, not a problem. Fix the fucking problem first.

"What's the problem?" you ask? Your septic tank has failed. Call a pro and find out why.
>>
>>1105335
Pipe going to the sewer seems blocked from all the shit, I'll get some gloves and try to remove it by hand.
Already removed around 10kg of fossilized crap.
>>
As has been said, your septic tank is not working properly. If water cannot take the usual path to exit the tank, it will find a path such as the issue you are experiencing.

Okay /diy/, I've been tossing an idea around with some friends and wanna get a fresh take on it.

Shit's fucked yo, luckily you read that screenshot of that dudes blog who's country fell into war, and you where prepared.
You hoarded massive amounts of the two most precious items around: Tea lights and cigarette lighters.
Now you are the fucking king of your town, armed guards roam around your house to protect your precious collection.
But soon it shall be winter, and you won't have power from your solar pannels any more.
All you have is millions of tea light candles and anything you can find in the local abandoned hackerspace you took over.
How do you get the most of the ~100wh of energy these little blighters have in them?

This shit here is what made me think of it.
I thought it must be bullshit, but apparently tons of people do it and it's not.
So, peltiers seem silly for this, plus heat loss out the sides. Stirling engines, I doubt they'd have the power to turn a generator.
Steam engines, I dunno.

I'm thinking of a peltier with a metal cone underneath it, maybe? The top just a metal cup full of water to pull heat out.
>>
>>1104312
>I thought it must be bullshit
Bingo!
>but apparently tons of people do it and it's not.
I better give Scientology. Astrology, and trickle down economics a shot then!

You can't increase the power output of a candle but putting a couple of pots over it. It just means you heat the pots instead of the air. A fair amount of that heat is lost in the pots, regardless.

TL;DR, it's bullshit.
>>
>>1104320
I thought that, then started wondering where the heat in a normal candle goes.
If it creates a small amount of very hot air, and that air shoots directly up to the roof and escapes the house, then it's not gonna do much.
If that very hot air is captured in something, say, an upturned pot with a big chunk of metal in the middle to act as a sink, then the temperature is lowered yet spread, you could perhaps get some nice warm air rather than a small amount of mega hot shit.

It is funny though, how much the pots look like a certain anti gravity device.

Anyway, looking around I've seen a handful of calculations that put the energy stored in a tealight at around 150wh, with some burning in 9 hours, others at around 4, that's a max constant output of 40 watts.
That's enough RAW energy to power 5V at 8A.
Just need to find the most efficient heat to electricity converter that works at such low power.

I have found something truly amazing - a angle grinder with plastic gears! Found it in the bottom of a box of junk from an estate sale. Theres a black plastic driven bevel gear and a white plastic drive. The stator coils were burned out but the gears looked fine. The brushes were in crooked and half destroyed. I'm pretty sure its not intended to be a toy, it has a standard 5/8-11 mounting.

That's not uncommon. It is like the plastic pieces of a blender where the motor and the blades join. They rarely have a problem and normally the motor will burn out long before anything else. This is due to the fact that on such cheap ass devices, the motor has the most problems simply because it is a motor and it is cheap as fuck.

I want to treat myself a nice, warm pair of leather boots that are suitable for a wide range of outdoor work or play in any weather. They should be durable, made with supple, high-quality vegetable tanned cowhide, and only get better over time. They must be stitched with care and heavy gauge thread. They should have soles and heels that can be replaced by a cobbler if necessary. An owner of such a pair of boots should be expected to periodically oil them with mink or neatsfoot oil. I am willing to pay for such boots.

I know the ingredients that go into a quality pair of shoes, but I do not know specific brands/models/bargains. Can Anon steer me in the right direction?

Want to replace this dish antenna with a convention TV antenna. Basically want to keep the mounting and cable runs, and I've clear sky to south where stations are. Questions:

Why are there 4 cables to this thing? Can I just reuse one of them and clip rest?

Appears ground wire was run to electrical panel (it's now been clipped or come loose). How appropriate is running a ground like this vs a true ground rod?

Pic attached is current setup. Any input appreciated.

Because there are 4 receivers.

>Can I just reuse one of them and clip rest?
Yup.

> How appropriate is running a ground like this vs a true ground rod?
Either works.
>>
>>1108247
Why would you want to snip the others? If you have 4 TVs, you'll want all 4 to connect to the antenna.
>>
Every TV set you hook up to an antenna will cut the signal in half (or more). You can get a booster for $15 - $20 to solve that problem.

Also keep or sell that dish! Don't scrap it.
