Hey /diy/ I'm almost finished building my work shed built and I want to outfit it for woodworking. Mainly learning how to build furniture and such. What tools would be best to get to start with? I know that my first big project will be building a new shelf for my various knick knacks and collectibles.

What is your budget?
Do you want to go the hand tool route (cheaper, more difficult, slower) or the power tool route (more expensive, more dangerous, faster, easier)?
How do you feel about purchasing used tools (save a ton of money, maybe have to wait until something good shows up, maybe it needs some work before its usable)?
Is space a concern?
Do you think you will ever need to turn wood on a lathe?
What about joint and plain your own boards?
>>1108897
I have about $1000 left over in my budget after the build is all said and done. I would prefer to go power tool definitly. I have a 30x40 shed so space isn't a huge concern. A lathe would be nice but I don't plan on making my own boards yet.
after years of fapping my room stinks to high heaven so bad my eyes water and i get headaches. i have cleaned out all the rubbish but short of washing all my books and electronics down with disinfectant theres nothing much i can do. i read a comment from a man who bought a car someone had decomposed in and an ozone generator took the smell away. can anyone recommend something cheap and functional?
Ozium. Candle.
I got a used 15,000 volt neon sign transformer from eBay and made a fucking huge Jacob's ladder.
The spark gap starts at about 3/4" and spreads to at least 3 inches at the top and is about 3 feet tall.
That motherfucker generates a shit ton of ozone.
>>1108732
Ozone generators cause lung problems
A little background then my question. Im trying to get into the welding field, i graduated with my welding diploma about a month ago and just built up the motivation to assemble a toolbox and start applying for positions that interest me. Such positions would be sst gtaw/ alum gtaw/ mig (dislike aluminum mig with the spool gun) and last but not least stick. And i really dont want to get into production work. Anyways this is my toolbox
>tl;dr anyone experienced in the field have any tools they would recommend me buying right off the bat or tools they would omit from this mess.
Also keep in mind i have all the required ppe. Inb4 dur u fur get welding helmet op! Also i was looking at a few job postings and they had a 4 1/2" grinder and basic air tools listed. Anyone have jobs where this was required? Im not rich i cant afford air tools
If you just graduated, you take what you can get. And don;t have an entitled attitude. Do you honestly think ANYONE wants to do shit production work? And you almost always have to spend money to make money.
Go to HF and get your baby tools for as cheap as you can. Or a pawn shop. You aren't getting married to them. When you are earning more and it suits you throw them away and buy the best ones you can.
Protractor (combo square)
Scribes
Vise clamps (6")
Torch tip cleaners (community ones go to shit pretty quick)
Maybe:
Framing square
Calipers
Vise clamps (11")
Dividers
Has anyone dropped cable tv and just have an internet account instead running with an HD antenna, roku/prime/netflix accounts?
>>1108458
Yes. My family exclusively uses Netflix, but after 2 years it's getting repetitive.
We're moving on to the internet TV thing who's name I cannot recall right now, but we haven't paid for cable in like 3 years. No home phone either. What is this, 1998? You don't need commercials at a higher price than internet TV.
>>1108458
I use Netflix and an android stick with kodi on it. In a couple months I'll have two pcs I'm resurrecting also....kodi works better on pc. I can get pretty much everything even live TV although who wants to watch that
>>1108458

Netflix is dum
/diy/ trying to build my own generator
>I want to build a generator for my bike, similar to this but without the converting into lower watts etc..
>I want to use an electromagnet instead of a real magnet

here take a look at that design, much better, safer and reliable.
Just take a motor, put 3d printed (if you are a faggot and can't do it otherwise) head on top of it strap it somehow to the front wheel and done.
Add a diode and a capacitor on the other side, now hook a charging unit and 2 AA charging batteries, now hook them to LED or even better leave a usb port so you can use it as powerbank charged by your bike.
>>1108119
>I want to use an electromagnet instead of a real magnet
Apparently you don't understand even basic physics or you'd know that not only won't work, it'll do the opposite of what you want (i.e. CONSUME power instead of GENERATING power). Go look up 'laws of thermodynamics' and get back to us, k?
>>1108315
Hey kid before you go on a huge rant you should know that is how pretty much every alternator works
I have a couple of plano boxes:
I want to cut shapes into the top plastic panel, including circles and squares. It does not need to look that good, and the circles don't need to be hole saw quality etc
Can I /diy/ this shit with some very basic tools? I would really prefer to avoid using heated tools if at all possible (specifically I don't want to use a soldering iron)
Some kinda very mini xacto-saw?
>>1108068
Plastic scoring tool. Create an outline with tape and score it until it's thin enough to punch in.
You'll want to sand it after
>>1108068
For circles, I would use a step bit. For squares, use a good knife
red-hot knife or box-cutter. Do it outside though lol. You can also use hot-water and a power drill if they just need to be holes
My dad quit smoking for his job last year, and with that stopped maintaining his humidor of cigars.
Anyone know how to save a bunch of dry cigars?
Would this even be the right board to ask?
If not, where should I ask?
You smoke them
Dry cigars don't effect the taste much. It primarily means it will flake badly when being smoked, so it's a bit of a nuisance but honestly not that bad. Also unless you live in a very dry climate like Arizona or keep them in a heavily air conditioned home you shouldn't ever fun into that problem
For instance i live in SC where the humidity never drops below 60% (and rarely drops below 70%)
Just rehydrate them. It'd take time.
Can tobacco leaf be oxidized?
>>1107593
Btw, that's only around $70-120 worth of cigars so unless you are keeping them to smoke yourself it's not a huge loss
> Residential Architecture
Deos anyone have any good resources for residential architecture/building your own house (America)? I am looking to build my own house on a plot of land I would like to buy. I want to go this option so I can have a house with a layout that I actually want that doesn't need work to update it. I see houses that are selling for waaaaay too much money that need a lot of updates (roof, windows, ect).
>>1107559
Juat hire an architect.
With out an architecture license or a structural engineering stamp your building wont be approved to be built by your local gov. Nor will a bank finance it.
>>1107561

>"How do I [do thing myself]?"

Thanks for the reply.
I was looking into the construction loans aspect of this, and it looks like banks want 'reputable' contractors to give you a loan. I know 'reputable' contractors and have met many more, they're scum 90% of the time. Do you think there is any way to get around this? I'd rather not work with these shit heads in this area.
Any acessible, cheap yet dangeours /diy/ you wouldn't try to avoid problems?
I'm bored and I want to get some thrill in 2017. Ideas?

Get a table router. Neat tool, but kinda scary to use with smaller work pieces.
How to meld glass bottles?
I can cut off eg the bottom or top with fairly good success, but everytime I try to heat up the edges with a blowtorch to meld the sharp edges it crackles.
In an ideal world I would like to soften the glass enough to bend it a little into shape; not the entire bottle, just eg near the cut area
You are talking about fire polishing, try to look into it more, glass doesn't like to be heated unevenly.
>>1106518
>fire polishing
okay, didn't know about that
looks like you need an acetylene flame for that
or would your average propane blowtorch be hot enough?
>>1106523
I did it in high school with a Bunsen burner is science class when I had to cut some glass tubes. It has been a long time.
I want to retire to rural Ireland
I just found out that most rural properties use a septic tank and water well. I've lived in English cities with public sewerage my whole life so I have no idea how sewerage works in rural places. Can any country folk enlighten me:
>If my property has a private water well, do I have to bring water in manually or does my home automatically draw water in for the toilet, taps etc.?
>How often does a septic tank need maintenance provided I take care and don't flush grease or tampons and stuff?
>Will a surveyor be able to tell me if a property's septic drainage field is in good shape?
>Also, in rural Ireland how difficult is it to get a good internet connection, and who are the best providers?
>>1106448
The O'Liriere's will eat you alive...
>>1106448
>If my property has a private water well, do I have to bring water in manually or does my home automatically draw water in for the toilet, taps etc.?
The well is the bit that accesses the ground water. Where it goes from there depends on what you have. If you're not buying an authentic hobbit hole, the well will be connected to a pump and related plumbing that maintains water pressure in the house.
>How often does a septic tank need maintenance
This is something you would check with the septic system manufacturer/installer about, but typically add a bit of Rid-X or something similar once a month, and have it pumped every few years. Don't dump antibiotics or bleach.
>Will a surveyor be able to tell me
I suspect that this depends on the surveyor. If they regularly have to deal with that, since it's common in that area... might as well ask.
Yes, all toilets and taps in Ireland have water magnets, they will attract the water from the well through the pipes. No pump needed.
>bought a bunch of tools from america
>all of them have a warning on them that says "This product contains chemicals known to the State of California to cause cancer and birth defects or other reproductive harm."
what the fuck america? what the fuck are you putting in your tools?
>>1106229
Probably talking about the solder on the wires. California has some really weird laws, we just ignore them as a state.
>>1106229
>that pic
>>1106229
They are know to cause cancer , birth defects and reproductive hard only in the state of California so as long as you are not in California you are good.
And honestly there is not a valid reason to spend more then a few days in the peoples republic of California anyways.
Alright, /diy/nosaurs, I've got a problem, and I don't trust /o/ to be of any help.
I've been trying to open the fill plug on my car's transfer case. Problem is, it looks as if some dumbass has actually epoxied/sealed the damn thing in.
Now I can't get the fucker off, even with an impact wrench with 550 ft/lbs of torque. What do?
Pic related.
>>1106040
Heat her then cheat her!
Heat and a cheater bar would probably work if you have the room.
But this is one of those times where you need to step back.
Did they seal it for a reason?
Maybe the retard stripped it out and then sealed it.
There may actually be risk opening it up.
How important is changing the fluids?
>>1106046
>How important is changing the fluids?
It's starting to make a noise, I was checking to see why
>>1106040
drill it out
tap it
put a new bolt in
this can be done for <20 dollars if you're not a typical /o/ fucktard
why did you come to /diy/?
Probably an odd question, but pictured is a Magikarp Taiyaki pan which is possibly one of if not the hardest piece of Pokemon merch to get your hands on which i really want. Problem is not only have i looked for months and never seen a single person willing to part with one, but the few times i've heard of them being sold they sold for well over $300 so it seems like it would be cheaper and easier to make or have one made.
So how would i do that? Does anyone have any ideas or advice for me to make or have one of these made?
>>1105804
looks like a sheet of steel was just stamped with a magikarp die. doubtful youre going to be able to get the same quality at home. maybe if you can 3d print a similar model then cast it in aluminum and use that to stamp a sheet of steel or something that might work but idk. maybe a home vaccuformed mold using foodsafe plastic would get you good enough
>>1105813
What about cast iron?
Recently in Japan a very small number of taiyaki shops had these molds that look like they might be cast iron.
Im not looking to make an exact replica, just something that does the same job.
Just shell out the 300, you weeby fuck.
