hey /diy/,

Im building a birdbuggy for my parrot. It's basically a joystick controlled remote car with an arduino with the bird sitting on top manipulating the joystick to move around. I bought the wheels from ebay, four of them. I do not use the design in the picture but a 4 wheel rocker-bogie suspension instead (like the marsrover). I have the frame made of wood and i have the electronics working on a prototypeboard. I just need to pick the motors. I have some wheels (first link) but this is my first project like this and i do not know how mount them to a motor. I guess that would be my first question. The other one I wanted to ask is which motor to pick. I need one like in the second link, but with the holes to mount them to the leg on the other end. Does anyone have any suggestions? Thank you in advance.

Why doesn't it just fly? These animals were created to soar through the limitess airspace and you are confining it to a little buggy like some overweight old man.

If it's wings are clipped, why are you now giving it a buggy? Do you regret handicapping it?

If i had a fucking nickle for every person who would comment on my keeping the bird clipped i'd pay donald trump to have the buggy manufactured in america, out of gold.

Here's my copypaste response:
No one should keep birds. But they are here now so we have to take care of them. Always get birds from shelters and do not support the industry that breeds them. The climate is too cold for them to survive on their own here in the wild (i have an African grey) and he would not be able to survive in the wild in Afrika since he was born in captivity and ended up with me from a shelter. As far as we currently know, the best way to keep a bird is clipped so it becomes safe to take it on walks without cage or leash to the park, out to dinner, on trips to family, friends and house parties, and occasionally work or out for a pint. They learn to deal with situations they otherwise flee from and to make friends with other people. They are phobic by nature but this can be overcome with this approach. Should I ever hear otherwise, the feathers can just grow back. Clipping does not have to be a permanent decision.

Don't worry about the bird. Picture is him on a trip to the airfield with me. We came to watch the airshow. Unclipped birds don't get do this. He is allowed to fly short distances of about a 100m when we're at the park, when it's not too windy and there are no dogs around. I also take him flying with me in light aircraft. Thanks for your concern, but don't worry about him.

Please focus on the question i asked.

I think I need LED strips, lipo batteries, a charging port, switch, and maybe an RGB color controller. That's easy, my friend who makes box mods can help.

The hard part is making a sturdy transparent/translucent cross to put the components in, like two clean halves that can be put together.

I want the final product to be very bright, but I do NOT want individual LEDs to be visible.

Clear resin seems like the only way. example: http://imgur.com/a/iJrX8 . I would be able to try different levels of sanding until I got the perfect level of light diffusion. I think making a mold is pretty doable, the shape is simple. I could make two halves, then grind down & sand the insides to make spaces for the components.

3D printing sounds much easier. But I don't know about the materials they use and size limitations. I imagine I would have to pay straight through the ass. Making a 3D model would be effortless compared to molding mixing pouring carving grinding and sanding resin by hand tho.

I would really appreciate advice + pros/cons on molding/3D printing this.

Get some thick walled acrylic tubing, some of that thin white foam packing sheet, some 5 min epoxy glue and a thin sheet of plastic or acrylic.

Cut to an appropriate length, notch the pipe where you want an intersection, and go from there

Can someone recommend some good all around work gloves that will last while but don't sacrifice dexterity?

I've got another 4000 sq ft of flooring to do and my hands are fucked up but I can't work very fast with thick gloves.

Price isn't much of an issue, but I'd like them to be under $40

Mechanix or knockoff are the best for dexterity, but they wear out fast.

Goatskin work gloves are a good compromise. Cheap ones (Harbor Freight tier, pic related) wear out fast but nice ones can last quite a while. A well-fitting, well-made pair is worth the investment imo, they are miles ahead of old fashioned work hamfists.
>>
>>1109985
>A well-fitting
Not OP, but I've never found a pair of gloves that fit well. Where would I look for such a thing?
I once tried to diy a falconry gauntlet, but that didn't go well.

Trade specialty stores. Welding stores, machinists, sheet metal, etc. Still tough to find.

Old-school hardware stores used to carry them (Osh, Ace, etc) but they are all out of business now, at least in my area.

Honestly, best bet may be to order online from somewhere that has a good return policy.

Get the HF shit for now though, they work pretty well for 6 bucks, they just bust open at the seems after a bit of abuse.

Want to create/mod a speaker to use on my balcony and the bathroom.
I have a free channel on my Xonar U7 that I can use,
Problem is.
I would have to use a 20-25m long 3.5mm cable which sounds like a terrible idea because of the analog signals.
The second problem is the speakers itself, I don't have a clue how to waterproof it nor make it resistant to cold.
I've done a lot of diy projects and have tools and money, I just need a nudge in the right direction.

You can waterproof the electronics with potting, or just covering in silicone, or just wrap in rubber tape

There are probably waterproof speaker modules out there, not sure

Over the 25 m distance you should just get something to plug in at the location, e.g. ipod or something, but if you have to make a cable you can easily make one from some quality cables, the ones they use on stage are often screened, e.g. Van Damme

Get a wire plant dolly/plant caddy. Put the speaker face down on it and a bucket over the top. Wire bucket to caddy.

does /diy/ wash their tools?

i'm always curious about the cleanliness of tools, especially those used in wood working. i see a lot of people using sanders, chisels, saws, etc. to kitchen items but always wondering how this affects food safety.

I'm trying to set up an induction heater to get things red hot and melt things without having to deal with fuels. I've seen these 1000w induction heaters recommended, but I don't have 24-48v 20A power supplies sitting around.

Is there any reason I couldn't just take an induction hotplate, mess with the thermostat, and put in my own coils? It seems cheaper.

>>
Computer chargers are usually ~24V and 2A
Take 10 of them and hook them up in parallel. BOOM 24V DC at 20A
>>
>>1109742
>mess with induction hotplate
That's the easiest solution.

Or make your own, they're easy as pie.
>>
>>1109749
Even at $5 each, that's $50 worth of power supply. And 24v is on the low end, you need 36-48v for max power.

>>1109751
Most of the schematics I see still need a power supply and aren't much cheaper than the premade ones.

i want a wet line on my work truck. how would i go about installing a hydraulic pump/pto on a little 4 banger toyota?

off a pulley? the transmission?
7 posts and 1 images submitted.

For your load an electric pump will likely work.

What do you plan to power? You can check out tow truck suppliers online for other parts. I strongly suggest visiting your local industrial hydraulic store to see what they have. They can crimp custom hoses for you too.
>>
>>1109377
>What do you plan to power?
compressor and a winch, problem being i don't think my trucks alternator or battery could handle both at the same time. it barely could handle the aftermarket stereo i uninstalled.
>>
>>1109311
If u can get a spare battery, mount it ground it. Then hook it up as a separate system to run the pump. No reason to run wires and risk draining ur battery if its already being overwelmed. There should be tons of dyi articles on this for u if this is the route u wanna take.

I've got a knob from a Sony CD player that I'd like to clean up a little before I re-sell the whole thing. Any idea what the best way to do it is? I've got some brasso, plastx, and some fine sandpaper meant for plastic models. Should I just sand it smooth, polish it, and hope for the best?
9 posts and 2 images submitted.
>>
In case it wasn't clear from the pic, it's got kind of a texture on everything but the chamfer, and I'm worried it'll look worse when it's done.
>>
>>1109224
Wouldn't mess with it.
Some knobs are layers of different plastics.
A little wear is normal on things.
I have refinished some plastics but they never matched. wetsand with 800 grit, wetsand again with 1200, then paint with krylon fusion.
Odds are you will have more into fixing the knob than it will bring on sale.
Also, Sony might have a replacement part.
I found one for my Jeep that was $7.50. less than what I spent in time and materials to fix the old one.
>>
Do it. I polish my knob every night and nothing happened.

I need to bend this piece of metal for a project. I put it in a vice and tried bending with vice grips. This didn't work. Even tried hitting with a hammer in the vice. Then repeated the above after hitting it with a propane torch. It wasn't red hot, but it didn't work. Any ideas?

>>
>>1109100
try bigger vice, bigger pliers, bigger hammer, bigger torch (more multiple torch), more red hot
>>
>>1109100
higher temperatures - oxy/acetylene torch
or cut a 90degree notch nearly through and bend it (or less maybe through)

looks like a piece of keystock

Hello /diy/

ITT: how to fry a pc

For a few reasons, I need to electrically damage a computer as much as possible, and have it look like environmental damage.

I need to have as many of the coponents damaged in one shot.

I dont have access to lightning, i have the 220V outlet though

>>
Buy a usb killer
>>
Would applying 220V through the ethernet work?
>>
Unplug everything you dont want fried first, like hdd's if yiu want to keep your data.

Hook a car battery up to some electrical probes, and start probing parts around the motherboard 24 pin connector, the cpu 4/8 pin connector. Should make it look like a power surge.

After that, bridge all the capacitors in the board to leach out any unwanted power you may have stored in them, then plug the stuff back in.

Layout technique depends on the parameters of the number and spacing. I'd use a drill press to actually drill the holes once they're marked and punched.
